Ok people I'm curious as to what some of you may think about what I've been hearing on the radio about this coming ANZAC Day, as so far as the remaining veterans are rather annoyed with the fact that children and or families will be marching in the place of those who have passed on.
Now I myself, have the greatest respect for those who have served our country and for those who have died for it (I'm an army brat, my father servered for 20+ years and fought in Vietnam). I understand that those family members who march in place of a deceased loved one are doing so to show their respect and to honor them, but I feel that the march should be only for those remaining veterans, not for some 5 year old child who's parents have pinned the medals of a person the kid has never met onto his chest. I believe another way should be thought of to honor those who have died, and let the surviving veteran’s share their moments with what comrades are remaining. Just my thoughts. |

From what I have read 5 year olds cant wear the medals, only 10 years and older can. Also, the family members march as a group at the back after all the people who have actually served. And its only 1 family member, not the whole extended family that is allowed to march. I dont see a problem with that at all. Some of the diggers think its the only way that ANZAC day marches will survive, and i tend to agree with that. Afterall, marches occur all over Australia and not just in big cities. Some towns only have family members, with all WWI, WWII diggers having passed on, and no one from any other conflict. The only way they can have a march at all is if family members are allowed to march. so in conlcusion: good idea.

Why not? Like you said they're maching to show their respect and honour them. I guess pinning the badges to children is a bit silly but perhaps if they were to march with thier grand's pictures & medals to show that "yes, we are honouring them"?
On the other hand, my gf grand dad who was at the Kokoda trail/track refused to a) accept any medals they were gonna give him b) anything to do with the war. Apparently he just wanted to move on and never wanted discussed anything about the war to anyone. Nice old man, he's really quite and softly spoken. I'm sure there'll be quite a few remaining diggers that felt that way.......not sure if I blame them though. |

It's starting to show some selfishness, isn't it.
If they don't want the decendants of people marching, then pretty soon we'll have no parade and just forget about it, thus defeating the point of ANZAC day. If through their selfishness that's what they want, then fine, lets forget it. At least we made an effort to remember the ones who didn't bitch and moan, who came before them. Of the ten national/state public holidays we have, I only consider two of them to be valid (Australia day and ANZAC day). It's oh so nice to know that the respect we pay is disrespected. |

I don't see why they're so grumpy about kiddies marching in the place of their dead grandparents who died fighting in the war.
It's f***ing insane, one year everyone is worried that the younger generation doesn't care about those who fought in the war, the next year they're unhappy that the kids are marching in the parades. |

In times long ago, there exist a man, a man who fought against trolls, a man who dedicated his life for pretecting the internet, keeping it troll free keeping it idiot free... he died while protecting the thing he loved most. That man was Greasy I.
I, Greasy II, will uphold the tranquility, will fight against anyone who dares to disturb this beautiful place. Here me now Tanaka Khan, YOU SHALL NOT PASS. youre going down motherf***er. last edited by GreenRedEarthAfterZooYears at 01:40:22 12/Apr/06 last edited by GreenRedEarthAfterZooYears at 01:41:27 12/Apr/06 |

If your going to keep it troll free how about actually kicking out a troll. Tanaka may post some strange things, but he doesn't let the trolling get to him, and it takes brass balls to do that.

LOL Greazy, I just had a flash back to LOTR when Gandalf confronted the Balrog. Gandalf died then, and so shall Greazy II.
Edit - Fighting to uphold the tranquility? Sounds like a contradiction to me. Wouldn't a more peaceful approach be more inline with that way of thinking? P.S. I'm not the troll here =) last edited by Tanaka Khan at 02:46:03 12/Apr/06 |
