The ABC is reporting on yet another misguided attempt to try to stop children accessing unsuitable material on the Internet: Opposition Leader Kim Beazley says a Labor government would introduce laws requiring Internet service providers to offer a "clean feed" without pornographic and violent sites.Won't somebody think of the children!? You should probably let your local Labor MP know what you think of this idea. Of course it's technically impossible, but that isn't really the point. |

What rot. There are probably more adult porn viewers out there than what there are young children using the net. Porn is the number one use of the internet, and anyone who says they have never looked up porn online is lying!

I tried really hard to keep my personal comments out of the news post (and failed, really), but I heard this on the radio this morning, including the sound bite where he says "block it at the point of the provider as opposed to the point of the parent" and had to restrain myself from screaming.
First of all, the only way to block porn effectively would be to use whitelist filtering - block ALL sites except those on an allow list. Doing it any other way is basically just not going to work, no matter what advancements are made in the field of image recognition. Secondly, why SHOULDN'T parents be responsible? It is increasingly obvious that they're not responsible enough for the actions of their children. Some serious questions need to get asked about the accountability of parents for their children's actions. I saw a front page newspage article the other day saying something about making parents responsible for their children not being at school - like this was some sort of revolutionary new idea. Sheesh. |

"Block it at the point of the provider as opposed to the point of the parent and if that particular household wants to opt into the pornographic sites then they make an active decision to do so," he said. Why not that particular household opt to NOT have pornographic sites available to them. Where are we living, China??? |

Children should not be allowed on the internet unsupervised. It's yet again the government's attempt at holding everyone's hand as they cross the road of life, instead of putting responsibility squarely on the shoulders of the people at fault. In this case, the parents.

i'd have no problem with the blocking of certain content, but it is technically unpossible... so let parents be parents and let adults choose for themselves.

He may well know that it's impossible, however all the god fearing, "let someone else deal with my issues instead of me doing anything about it so that I have them to blame not me" won't have a clue that it's not possible and vote for them cause that's what they believe ...

Any attempt to do something as ridiculously futile as this can only serve to increase broadband subscriber fees. Leave the responsibity of internet safeguarding with the parents.

PornoPete: I challenge you to prove that in any fashion.
I can assure you there is no alignment of any sort whatsoever between the Libs and Family First apart from that stupid "family impact statement" that had to accompany all bills to go before parliament and which the government has since reneged on. And this was done simply to buy their preferences in 2004. Family First are as wacko as one nation. What I am talking about is why would labor say this if they are trying to be taken seriously. Surely one of their staffers or party members knows something about IT... somewhere. And doob i agree there are far more offensive material than porn e.g. big brother up late. |

Its actually very easy to do using N2H2 filtering and a product like Webmarshal. To any one that thinks its technically impossible. Wake up to your self, its all but trivial. block everything but port 80, use a cache that actually scan pages and weights the conents and subscribe to an active blocking service. Will it be 100% ? no, not at all but it will be quite powerful, you can even set it up so if it is over the top a special "parents password" can unlock content.
If you read what was said a law requiring them to offer. ie. Adults can get unfiltered. But Parents can opt in to get a safer version. And it doesn't say it has to be free or anything. Personally if you want to protect you internet freedoms you lot should be actively encouraging options that allow people to protect themselves and their families if they so choose. Becuase if people can't opt in, they'll start asking for it to be blocked for everyone. I doubt many of you actually read the article and less actually understood the subtly of what was said. |

Obes beazley's statement was
"Block it at the point of the provider as opposed to the point of the parent and if that particular household wants to opt into the pornographic sites then they make an active decision to do so," he said. That reads to me like a blanket ban and you have to ask for it to be lifted. Frankly get f***ed (not you but the attitude) if parents dont want their kids to see certian things then its up to them. I fail to see how its anyones responsibility to monitor a childs viewing habits other then the parents. "The reality is ... only about a third of the parents put some sort of blocker in relation to the sites on their home computers, it's too hard for most of them but if you did it at the level of the provider, probably very few people would opt in." The only reason I can think that would give that last sentence any weight what so ever is that people wouldn't want to be labeled perverts for enabling porn feeds. |

Fortunately the government doesn't seem to be giving credence to the idea of central internet filtering the last time I checked. Helen Coonan said:
The biggest issue—it is not so much the money—is that such an expensive scheme would not necessarily solve the problem and small to medium ISPs would simply be driven out of business for little or no benefit. What does work is greater information and parental supervision, and those are the kind of programs that the government is promoting. Prof. Bill Caelli, from the IT faculty at QUT, was a big supporter of going a similar route, not having central [child] porn filtering as such, but in fact mandating that every computer that accesses the internet have filtering software installed. He believes that we have the technology to force people to have this kind of software installed or be denied net access, and to ensure attempts to simply spoof the presence of the software are futile. I don't see how it is, even assuming that every computer has brain-amputated stuff like Trusted Computing. Best solution is government, hands off and let the market handle it. If there is a market for a 'family' or religious friendly ISP that endeavours to block harmful content so the end user doesnt have to handle it, then surely one will start up. |

I've been looking at porn since I was 12 - didn't do me any harm! Kids look at porn cos they like it! How is it damaging??? All these self-righteous pollies telling us how we should raise our kids. Get f***ed. I'd be worried if I had a 15 year old son who WASN'T looking at porn. |

gimpy, are you a retard? seriously? the internet is awesome because it is compleatly uncontrolable by the governments. its compleatly up to YOU to chose what to look at and what not to. true freedom? almost. IMHO, I think the internet and technology is the worst thing mankind has ever done to this planet, and themselves.that has to be the dumbest statement ever. internet, how has the internet the worst thing mankind has ever done to this planet and themseleves? and technology. well, who cares if technology destorys this planet, if ultimatly, its going to get destroyed by the sun anyway. lets just hope that technology destroys this planet AFTER it has allowed us to find a new one and migrate. you're acting like you're being opened minded, but no, your mind is set on this doomsday theory that the world is going to corupt itself into oblivion. |

Wtf is wrong with you people? The internet is a GREAT source of medium for knowledge and education, information and communication.
My time spent on the internet: 25% Education ( Reading articles, learning new information ) 30% Communication ( Forums, Email, MSN ) 35% Work ( My business dies without internet ) 5% Games 5% Porn I highly doubt that a high percentage of internet users just use it for porn, I bet you most people use the internet similar to how I do. If they banned porn, I wouldn't care less. There will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS be a way to get something. If you want it bad enough. |

also, if they did force people to have filtering software or try to get ISPs to ban porn people would always find ways around it right?
I mean they tried to get ISPs to throttle bitorrent and so some peeps changed bt to become ecncrypted and pwnt the ISPs or something like that right? And if they forced people to use filtering software I'm sure people would find ways around it, wouldn't they? Also NF I thought China was fighting a losing battle trying to control their net? I haven't really read much about it so feel free to enlighten me. |

Banning violent porn isn't going far enough. They should put thru legislation to make it so that a woman does not have to be forced to have intercourse against her will, or something like that

There are horrible things on the internet. If you don't know how to avoid them, you shouldn't be using the internet.
We have things for adults like bars, strip clubs and fireworks shops, and that is how the internet should be treated. You have to be 18 to use it. Children shouldn't be playing here unsupervised. This isn't a blue-light-disco, keep them the f*** away. Basically it used to be like that, back in the good ole days. |

I have 5 kids between 6 & 14, and I supervise the younger ones. My eldest I leave alone pretty much. I do check out his internet history every now and again though. Every kid has their own login and can only access what I think they should. Admittedly, I'm making some assumptions about their technological skills, but it certainly seems to be working. They all have their favourite websites with flash games and stuff, and pretty much have links to them. There are some other links I've setup that they use at school.
The internet is a wonderful thing, and kids should be able to use it. Parents need to understand that the internet is just another medium. Most wouldn't let kids buy a Hustler, or rent a bukkake DVD. So don't let them look at it on the net. If you don't know how, find out! And like Obes was saying, you can get the net nanny stuff if you want. Kimbo is just being a dick. Probably diverting attention away from the fact that his party is in a shambles and needs to be fixed. Nothing will come of it. ... and another thing! I've noticed that there is this gap between kids today and their parents. Larger than the one that I had with mine. It's the PC. Some parents see them as bizzare complicated things. I don't know how many times I've heard other parents say things like "Oh, we just had to get him a computer. They need one these days." or "Jimmy is just a whizz on the thing, I have no idea how he does it!". I've seen the results of this by talking to parents at the QGL Lan in the past. Parent: "So what do you do here?" Me: "We network all our computers and play games against and with each other." (Bizzare look) Parent: "You can do that?" I've had parents actually abuse me for running a "violence training centre"... and then leave little Timmy in my care!!! "I want you to make sure he doesn't play anything violent." Sheesh! /rant last edited by Mantra at 23:31:37 21/Mar/06 |

Weighting content mostly works in a work setting, but is pretty much useless in a home environment. If some kid wants to learn how to make cream pies, read up about breast cancer or learn about positive sexuality in an anonymous and safe fashion your system would just remove it. Unless it was on a pre-approved white list, which means that some poor sod has to be approving websites constantly. . How about IM messaging? Not all of them use web safe ports. How about gaming? Nope, they don't generally run on web ports either. The world of Obes is everybody just surfing a few websites that the government authorizes. Which, IMO, is skirting perilously y close to fascism. I'm not saying that the intention is to be (or become) fascist. How does your system stop pornography appearing in children’s email accounts? How does your system stop children being approached by pedophiles online? How does it stop websites with only pornographic images or video being restricted (other than white lists). It doesn’t; rather you just pretend that it isn’t there. Also, if parents could have assumed the responsibility of managing the sites that their children visit, they could have used net nanny. However, as labour suggests, that level of responsibility is beyond most parents. Parents should be responsable for their children's lives, not the government. |

hello gimpy,
would you like to have a serious debate. or just bag me out on spelling? because im quite happy to have a serious descussion with you, but apparantly you're not mature enough to really handle that. fair enough, just hope you grow up some day. but seriously. just saying im "WRONG" and not giving a reason doesn't really make you right. and it doesn't convince anyone else either. btw, spelling, i must be stupid and have an incorrect oppinion, cauze mah sperling stucks. |

Thats exactly what N2H2 is typo a bunch of poor sod college students constantly filtering content into lists.
Also products like webmarshals read the contents of a webpage and give both positive and negative weightings for certain phrases. Besides which a parent can unlock it with a login. And its done server side not client side where a child can disable it. The technology exists and works. Most parents want IMs blocked (its the number one call I get from parents and these are parents who are savy and have tried firewalls and watching their tasklist (yay for hideit and MSN being uber hard to stop). BLocking MSN is near on impossible. By blocking all traffic other then port 80 and by using those sort of products is about the only way to block it. Parents don't care if kids can play online games, and to behonest, if you don't trust your child to browse the net you should not let them on an online game. Its an opt in thing, labour never said it had to be free, it can be user pays. The only people on this forum who have any concern to be crying are the ones living at home with parents that would love to stop them from wasting time on the net. |

Thats exactly what N2H2 is typo a bunch of poor sod college students constantly filtering content into lists. That’s nice, except that Labour is suggesting that they maintain the white lists. "Labor's "clean feed" system would prevent users from accessing any content that has been identified as prohibited by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, including sites containing child pornography, acts of extreme violence or cruelty, and X-rated material." Kim Beazly, 2006 Its an opt in thing, labour never said it had to be free, it can be user pays. No Obes it’s opt-out … “Through an opt-out system, adults who still want to view currently legal content would advise their ISP that they want to opt out of the "clean feed", and would then face the same regulations which currently apply.” Kim Beazley, 2006 last edited by typo at 00:52:49 22/Mar/06 |

I'd like to see a crackdown on this it has been happening an awful lot lately and personally I am sick of it) it helps to spell simple words correctly. |

Typo ... opt in .. opt out ... Either way you have the option thats the important bit. Instead of arguing semantics look at the bigger picture. Internet control is going to happen.

WhiteWolf, you must be atleast 11. Probably pushing 12 with the grammar and sentance structure of a 7 year old. That would be "sentence" and "at least" champ. Picking on people for grammar and typos on the internet is possibly dumber than having an opinion on the internet. |

Typo ... opt in .. opt out ... Either way you have the option thats the important bit. Opt in is a big difference on opt out, which is exactly why you promoted it as no big deal. Instead of arguing semantics look at the bigger picture. That your idea is still balls? Ok. Internet control is going to happen. Black lists don't work, white lists are too slow to update (for a national pace). Although, if (when) it was implemented at least I could comfort myself with the knowledge that it isn't your super d******* idea. |
