apparently the xbox 360 has been hacked already, some dude has posted a video of it being hacked which can be located here

it was hacked using a psp apparently and the hacker intends on releasing it later this month, in saying that there is no proof that this video is real or not, but yeah it doesnt look to dodgy even though it states the hack is being released in december.

holy s*** that vid came in slower then a snails trail, but does make you think using a psp how ironic.. as for the hack well with out proof of how he did it i call bs, but am sure as soon as the info comes to light xbox live will automaticly update firmwares hard drives and dashbaord none the less.

EDIT: no ingame play just some video footage, i call bs.

whether that video is BS or not, the 360 has been hacked and ive seen it being referred to as the xbox free60 now :) Here is a thread started by the guys who hacked it and a link to a video they did of it (different to the one posted in the first post. I don't think this hack has anything to do with the PSP though, i think it's the one spreading around news sites the other day stating that they've managed to find a whole in the dvd drive security because microsoft forgot to digitally sign the code for the dvd drives or something.

There is an air of inevitability about it being hacked, but even if modded 360s do become a reality I will still not mod mine. I want xbox live dammit!

(unless they release mods that still work under xbox live, but even then, how can you be sure ms will not fix it in the future?)

i thought one of the biggest features with the xbox360 was the ability to download additional content and microsoft putting pressure on them to keep making content to supply via xbox live standard.

thus modding it and taking away the ability to use xbox live would infact remove one of its greatest features.

Not being able to patch games would be a huge drawback for example.

the real 360 dvd hack probably wouldn't invalidate live, according to the comments i've read, since they can just keep patching the dvd firmware to accomodate for any additional security checks MS introduces.

Unfortunately since it's only for piracy they aren't releasing the hacked firmware publicly. Additionally the hack is way to complicated for ordinary people to do . By "ordinary" i mean people that were prepared to open up a brand new xbox1 and solder a chip to several points on their motherboard, they won't be able to do the 360 dvd hack without additional help+hardware. It's probably too hard. i feel that takes this first generation hack out of the relm of the do-it-yourself and in to the relm of send-your-x360-to-some-guy.

This hack isn't viable - it requries you to desolder the firmware in the DVD drive, and manually reprogram the chip (since there's serial specific stuff in there). Even then, the only thing it allows you to do is play burnt discs - you can't run any homebrew apps, or copy games to the hard drive, or any of the things that made Xbox or DC modding interesting.

Also, as far as I can tell, the details of it aren't publicly available anyway, so its basically just someone going "look what I did"

The hack may not be released in a compiled form, but the entire blueprints and discussion on how it was done are freely available online. In the interview the guy recognises that it's probably only a matter of time before it gets released by someone else now that its proven to work.

If someone creates PC drivers and applications to do the flashing then it will be user friendly enough for most of the community and mod shops to do. The difference is as it doesnt run homebrew and is only useful for piracy and archival purposes it might be tougher for retailers to justifiably cash in on it.

yeah its surprising exectuter would release such tools as the only use for it is piracy, surely MS could do something to them about that, as it has no 'legit' homebrew use, even though homebrew/region breaking isnt totally legit itself :S
