Does anyone know what I need to get to replace one of those little fans that is on a motherboard chipset? The one I've got on there now sucks and grinds for about 5 minutes each time I turn on the PC so I want to replace it, but I don't know wtf to buy to fit on it.
Its just a little low set fan, maybe 4-5cm square. I assume they're readily available but had a look on umarts site and all the ones they have are those massive ones. |

jaycar/dick smith should have something to suit your needs. Just a 12v cooling fan. You may need to cut/solder your plug off the old one and onto the new one but it's a simple task.

Depends on the heatsink design of your motherboard, but you can often just buy a 40mm fan and screw it in, rather then buying a whole new heatsink and fan combo.

Finding little fans like that and graphics cards fans can be hard to find :( depending on size and shape, round graphic cards especially
best bet would be to get a new heatsink and fan for the chipset. http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=5 for instance just make sure there is enough room for it so it doesnt touch any caps and what not last edited by fallenmessiah at 20:57:44 19/Mar/06 last edited by fallenmessiah at 20:57:52 19/Mar/06 |

http://www.pccasegear.com.au - for all your cooling needs. Get one of the blue zalman passive heatsinks and some artic silver 5 thermal paste. Nice and cool and no noise at all.

Alternatively try to find someone with a dead board and scavange the fan off that. You'd be pretty hard pressed just finding a fan for your exisiting heatsink. Only other option is to take fan off, peel back the foil sticker gaining access to the bearing, add a few drops of machine oil, stick sticker back down and walah no more annoying grind! Varies on how long that will work for, could be days or months, all depends on how crapped out the bearings are. As stated above the zalman passive would be my choice as well, my chipset fan still works fine but I'm considering doing it anyway to get rid of a bit of noise.. last edited by rubba-chikin at 22:28:48 19/Mar/06 |

The Cyber Room have chipset fans in stock. Zalman chipset heatsinks ($10 & $12) and Thermaltake Extreme Spirit chipset coolers ($22) as well.
For a cheaper option we have "Spire" Standard Fan's for($11) All in stock *Shameless Plug. last edited by H@MMER at 09:25:21 20/Mar/06 |

My vote goes for CoolPC - always friendly to help and advise on what the best option is for your cooler/FAN with an idea of price in mind, ie: they won't wind you up to buy the $100 heat sink & FAN if all you need is a $25 one.

yer sif you would buy something from a local shop and have it right away instead of saving $6 on the marked price, then spending $6 on shipping and waiting a week for it to come by buying online !!

Durack ?? local ?? *ahem*
It would take me 25 minutes to drive there, so 50 minutes round trip, i get paid $20/hour for work, so i'd be better off paying more but buying local and doing some overtime, not to mention not f***ing around. also, just trolling :p |

f*** fans, get a nice passive cooler. Zalman make the ZM-NB47J and they cost $10 from Altech. I got one for a machine at work it does the trick and it only cost us $6 (I think Altech's website has incorrect pricing). It is also pretty anodised blue for you case ricers.

problem is, most nf4 boards (which a lot of people have these days) has the nf4 hsf under the vid card, and a passive cooler wont fit. mine has 14mm clearance and i just squeezed in the iceberg 4.
