Ok last question concerning my new computer :)

3 Options:

BENQ FP91GX 19inch LCD 550:1 Silver/Black monitor 4ms DVI
Internet Price: $499.00
http://www.umart.com.au/pro/products_listnew.phtml?id=10&id2=16&&bid=2&sid=16180

Samsung 930BF 19 inch LCD Monitor 4ms
Internet Price: $595.00
http://www.umart.com.au/pro/products_listnew.phtml?id=10&id2=16&&bid=2&sid=13464

ViewSonic VX924 19 inch LCD, 3MS, 1280X1024, DVI, 550:1
Internet Price: $589.00
http://www.umart.com.au/pro/products_listnew.phtml?id=10&id2=16&&bid=2&sid=13458

The Samsung is 700:1, whereas both the Benq and the ViewSonic are 550:1.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to view them in action, so if anyone has seen them and can compare I'd be very interested in what you thought.

Right now I'm sitting on the Benq, unless someone can give me a good enough reason to pay an extra 20% to get the Samsung. I don't really see what the ViewSonic offers over the Benq...

Cheers

The Viewsonic is the only one of the 3 panels that has 8-bit colour. The others are 6-bit.

Given most of the other specs are similar (apart from a slight advantage of the Samsung in terms of contrast ratio), I'd go the one with the better colour support, but that's just my opinion.

I'm unaware of Samsung's dead pixel warranty .. but BenQ only has a 7-day 0 dead pixel warranty. The Viewsonic VX924 has a longer 90-day 0 dead pixel warranty.

Do pixels often suddenly die?

If i got the benq and kept it going 24hours for the first 5 days would that be enough to check if it was gonna die or not?

I've had 2 Benq's, both 19" and I have not had 1 dead Pixel. This has been over 4 months now at least.

Generally speaking if they are gonna die they will be dead from the beginning, I have never had one myself of heard of a customer saying their LCD has worked for x months and now has a dead pixel.

All the ones I have swapped in the last few months have been DOA swaps.

On the subject of BENQ not too sure about the 19" but those BENQ 20" widescreens panels are particularly nasty, we always get a few each week back with dead pixels. I swapped out one for a customer the other day only to find the replacement suffering the same fate on checking it before sending them on their way... 3rd time lucky eh :/

If you do decide to buy a BENQ insist on seeing it working before you leave the store. Prefereably running DPB (dead pixel buddy) or some equivalent proggy that cycles through different colours, Most computer shops SHOULD have it but I'd take it in on a USB thumbdrive or CD.

There any reason why you want 4ms? Got a Benq 20" Widescreen 8ms with an 8bit screen for $650.

That really isn't an issue nowadays, even on my old 16ms 17" Benq one I could never notice it.

I give a big thumbs up to the Benq model, with the two that I own (not that model though) I haven't had anything bad happen *touch wood*.

2 ms, that's crazy, they're really pumping it out fast now.

I've got a high-end 8ms LCD and I can still occasionally notice ghosting (primarily ultra bright or dark scenes)

Acer is 8ms and 500:1

I dunno it sucks that i cant see them in action side by side so I can really see the diff.

I'll probably got the Benq tho, cos I like the shiny/glassy screen they have. Looked at some in harvey norman today and the glassy screen ones seemed to look better to me.

Someone told be that 4ms is usually BS cause its only grayscale to grayscale 4ms and colour is still 8ms. Any idea if this is actually the case?

It's D-Sub only, no DVI.

I definitely wouldn't buy an LCD unless it had DVI support, due to blurring (from analog noise) and ocassional synchronisation issues.

What's the ratio thing mean?

I have a 12ms HP thing (20") and I dont notice any flicker or anything, I don't know how big a deal it is. Maybe I'm just a newb. I don't play a lot of fullscreen games though; most of what I play is in Windowed mode so its prolly less noticable.

Ah f*** that then, the quality difference between the two is amazing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrast_ratio

I've got a 930bf and am extremely happy with it. My only complaint is the base is a tad annoying to get off if you want to cart it around.

trog, if you want to gain a good understanding of LCDs overnight, check out X-bit labs' 27-page mammoth of an LCD guide that talks about all the different parameters of an LCD including response time, viewing angles, brightness/contrast-ratio, colour reproduction, different panel types, etc.

I knew nothing about LCDs before, but I learned a lot after reading the article. I was basically able to afterwards search for and buy an LCD with complete confidence in my choice. It also covers some of the deception involved in the LCD specifications released by manufacturers.

Sure it's 27 pages, but I highly recommend a read if you're interested:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/lcd-guide.html

I have it permanently bookmarked.

(edit: logic error)

How is the BenQ going for you now.
I can get the Samsung and BenQ at the same price here and was leaning towards the Samsung if only for the 3 year warrenty on dead pixels. Just got a Samsung 32" LCD television and so far very happy with it.
