Much to the disgruntlement of all the server administrators who were expecting a later release, EA have snuck out the Euro Forces mini-expansion/booster pack for Battlefield 2. You can buy it with the new EA downloader. You'll get three new maps, four new vehicles, seven new weapons and a new army.

My commentary on expansion packs for multiplayer games is still something I think is valid, and something that players should consider carefully.

They are my comments about expansion packs for multiplayer games in general.

How many extra unskippable company-logo splashscreens do you get with this release?

Just remember, you can't use an EuroForces Weapons in Vanilla BF2, Only the unlocks given already, (P90 and L96A1)

= I won't be buying it ;)

Well for $13 I can't see any reason not to. Another variation of a game to play when the other servers are full for the price of just over a 6 pack? Why not?

P90, L96A1, G36E and the MG36 are the only weapons I don't have unlocked as yet anyways

Well, I wouldn't do it because I'd feel like I was helping perpetuate the thought amongst game developers that they should keep adding token content updates and charging me for them, rather than do the clever thing and release an open, extensible game and let other users make free updates for them, thus adding untold amounts of replayability.

I drew the line in the sand with SF....if you can't even use the new weapons in vanilla bf2 then nuts to it...i have barely experienced any of the SF expansion yet anyway....and no doubt this release has the usual amount of bugs etc....plus you've got to use EA's Downloader (steam equiv?)...meh, should have been given out free for all who bought SF ATLEAST, if not to everyone for helping continue beta test the game.

Yah, I'll admit that you have a very valid point there, mebe I'll think about it ...

I agree 13 dollars isnt much. However, EA and now Dice has a reputation for s***ting around and even s***tier expansion packs when they should be fixing things wrong with the original product.

Also have you ever played bf1942: road to rome? Never again will I buy an expansion pack from the BF range.

Infact I can only think of one decent expansion pack from EA and that was Generals: Zero Hour.

I'll add though - I think expansions that let you play with non-expansion people would be awesome, although (as pointed out in my article) it could probably cause balance issues.

I do enjoy the fact that I can use my Spec Ops weapons that I have unlocked in Vanilla BF2 maps. It's a buzz actually to be able to pick up a weapon that I haven't as yet unlocked myself of a corpse.

The only thing that I don't like is when some retard has flashbangs an overuses abuses them on the vanilla BF2 maps (happens in SF maps as well unfortunately).
I don't believe that I have seen anyone using grapple or zip lines in BF2 vanilla though which would unbalance it a wee bit if you ask me.

Imagine a SF Sniper accessing a point where a normal Vanilla Sniper wouldn't even be able to dream of getting to

I'd enjoy spending all my time smashing all the people that had bought the expansion weapons with my poverty vanilla ones

You are unable to access ziplines or grappling hooks in vanilla BF2, flashbangs were the only non weapon to come across....no tear gas either...although that would have been majorly unfair.

In related news, EA announces another expansion pack that includes a BFG9000 that can be used in vanilla BF2. Pre-orders are at $499.

I don't think they're adding stuff that should have been there in the first place, personally. I thought BF2 out of the box had a good range of 'content'. As always though, it was just rife with bugs.
Do EA provide all the server hosting?
No - but they don't make you pay each month to play online. Also, if one BF2 server goes down, you have plenty of others to choose from. Also, you don't have to battle international lag to play.

International lag isn't a problem and anyone who thinks they lose duels or whatever becuase of it is just lacking skills.
Well, I've heard different from other people, so some people obviously do feel that way.
And if one WoW server goes down, there are still plenty more to play on.
Yeh, but you'd have to start another character, right?

Most of the whining I heard about latency was from rogues, which apparently makes some difference (due to positioning you need to be in when doing certain attacks)?

An Australian "based" server would be nice but its not going to happen.

Why the hell do you continue to support a compay that isn't willing to do just that?
Sheesh.

If all the aussie players simply ceased playing or renewing their accounts, you can pretty much be assured that Blizzard would change their tune in that regard

Obviously Blizzard can't afford to put in a server in the Australia/Oceanic region...what do you think they are, made of money or something?

5 million players x 15-20/month = GG.

Minus my two accounts, they should be feeling that in their wallets any day now.

I'm already back on vanilla bf2. The EF servers aren't full enough.. too many people leave and the map ends up one sided - or because one team is losing, people leave and there aren't the numbers to replace them.
