A 50,000-volt burst from a police Taser gun set an American man on fire when the electric jolt ignited a butane cigarette lighter in his shirt pocket.

Florida's Sun Sentinel newspaper said officers zapped the man last week when he refused to drop a knife in a standoff.

A Taser probe pierced the pocket of the man's khaki shirt and ignited the butane lighter inside. His pocket exploded in flames, the paper said.

The man immediately dropped the knife. Officers threw him to the ground and rolled him around till the flames went out.
