Jason McElwain, an autistic high school basketball team member in Rochester NY, served as the coach's assistant and spirit leader for several years. On the final game of the season the coach let him finally put on a jersey with the rest of the team. Watch what happens then...

Great that he got the opportunity, but I really don't find this exciting at all. I just see it from the perspective that the game was that far gone that he couldn't of done any damage either way.

come on overcoming adversity

apparently he scored 20 points in 4 minutes, last time i checked, that's insane. that's why it's impressive ... he's only 5'7 or something as well, plus he'd never played in an actual game? done well

All nothing but net too.

Aparently the first shot was a complete air ball. A good foot away from the ring.
The second bounced off the rim.
But the next 6 were all net.

Good on him, but also in the video I saw he wasn't exactly being marked to heavily, I think the oposition didn't think he was a threat so they weren't in his face. Still a nice "feel good" story.

Yeah was gonna say that as well - not to take anything away from the kid but, he wasn't really marked really, look like he had a pretty good look at 6 baskets he made. Unless of course he pulled those shots off from pick and rolls, now that would be even *more* impressive:).

what a rad school! all my autism ever got me at school was being used as a communal punching bag and being told by the school that it was my fault for being different.

bet u felt special though :P

getting 6 3 pointers in a row is f***en unbelivable especially for someone in their first game. i played basketball during school lunches. i was pretty good but i doubt i could get even 3 in a row.

I've seen people hit 6 x 3's in a row in _practice_. It's not really that hard if you've practice obviously, especially, if you're at the top of the key/elbow of the key (eps in highschool in the US where the 3 point line is a standard distance, NBA 3 on the other hands..are much harder even in practice).

Not a bad FG % for him, 6 out of 9 :)

Good shots. The crowd was going off.

From the story it sounds like he really liked basketball. I'm thinking he probably spent lots of time shooting while the court wasnt in use.

Stinky is not autistic.

Lazy, weird, nerdy and possibly gay yes, but not autistic.

Holy crap, 6 3-pointers in 4 minutes for a player who's never been on at that level before!? That's absolultely insane! Extrapolate that to a full game and .... woahhhhh.

I played basketball for ten years, and coached for five. Most players have a hard enough time hitting six free-throws in a row, let alone 3-pointers in full game swing.

from what i read in the paper, the kid was let on the court because they were easily in front ... he just put them a heap more in front i guess

and yeah most players do have a lot of trouble hitting that many free throws in a row. it's not like this kid had ever really been playing on the court either, so it's impressive as. interesting to see if he can do it again?

is this a case of he just practiced a lot, or is he some kind of basketball savant

i wouldnt be impressed if it wasnt for the fact there was only 4 mins left in the game,
thats some pretty quick action from a spastic.

yeah well sometimes severly autistic people who can't even really communicate on a meaningful level have one area (such as music) they are freakishly good at without trying

never heard of a basketball savant though
