I recently managed to crash my computer. It was not a serious problem, just some corrupted data and the computer wouldn't boot.

I didn't want to format my computer as I didn't have a back-up of the last three months or so of my docs.

I went out and bought a new hard drive and installed xp on it. I have my old hard drive running as the slave, and I can see all of the files as it was.

Problem is that when I go into the documents and settings/user it tells me that access is denied.

Any ideas how to get around this??

couldn't you just do a repair on the windows install on the old drive?

Ahhh, that's never worked for me in the past, not once, so to be honest, I didn't even try this time.

It might be a security / ACL problem(?). Check the security on the folder you're trying to access and make sure your user has correct permissions to access the folder.

This is the strange thing. . . I am the administrator, so I should have full access, but because I am trying to access my documents from the old copy of windows on the old hard drive, it is coming up with access denied. I thought it would just read it as a normal folder, because it's booting up from my new install of windows on my new hard drive, but there is still some kind of protection on the my docs folder on my old hard drive.

How do I turn that protection off??

thats the main problem with storing stuff in docsnsettings, do you know if you turned encryption on in that directory? (i think it may do it automatically)

ur best bet is probably to try do a repair of windoze (2nd repair screen), copy ur stuff outside docs/settings then copy it over

or theres a few tutorials using knoppix to remove the encryption i do believe.

Naah, I never put encryption on because it s***s me to tears when I want to access data from the laptop.

Looks like I will have to try and repair it. Wish me luck!! Doubt it will work as I have never had any luck in the past. Normally when you can't boot up in safe mode, it's pretty fkd.

Also, I have 4 HDD's now but I can no longer see the two I use for data storage. I have them plugged into the first raid slot and used to just access them as extra drives (not raid) but now I can't see them.

Any ideas??

mate i quickly skimmed over this thread so I dont know many details but this may work for you if you can try giving yourself ownership of the folder(then propogate the change) then give yourself full control permission(and subfolders).

1. In explorer go to >tools >view then scroll down the bottom and untick simple file sharing. Reboot.

2. In explorer right click on the doc and settings directory on your old drive and chose >sharing and security >security tab >Advanced >Owner then chose your admin account that you are using now and also tick the box down the bottom of the box and apply.

That will give your new account ownership of all your old docs so you can access them.

I don't suppose somebody could help me out with my other problem that I am currently faced with. . .

When I had my old hard drive installed, I had my 2 storage drives plugged into my IDE3 channel (Raid1)

Since buying this new hard drive and re-installing windows I can no longer see these drives. I did mess around in Bios a little, but other then the raid on/off option in Bios I don't know what I could have done to stop my computer from recognizing these hard drives.

Any ideas????

Bios shouldn't be a problem provided it was all good before. Very likely the jumpers on one or some of the drives are set incorrectly. CS sometimes does not work the way you want it to so set the jumpers to either master or slave or single on all drives including cd drives.

strange thing is that i didn't play with my jumpers on those hard drives, and during the boot-up i can see both drives, but once i get into windows, i only have the 5 partitions that i have created on the two hard drives on my primary ide cable. . . ??

What size is the new drive that windows boots up onto and what sizes are the two hard drives that are not showing up? Where the other two drives setup in a raid config before or where they just two separate drives?

In the run box type "compmgmt.msc" and click on disk management. Do they show up there?

In answer to your questions -
1) What size is the new drive that windows boots up onto? - 250gb WD

2) What sizes are the two hard drives that are not showing up? - 200gb WD and 80GB Maxtor

3) Where the other two drives setup in a raid config before or where they just two separate drives? - no, never had raid setup, I just use the ide3 for my extra hard drives, because i have two hdds on ide1 and 2 cdroms on ide2.

4) In the run box type "compmgmt.msc" and click on disk management. Do they show up there? - no, they don't show-up. :(

I became so desparate that I tried ALL jumper settings with and without raid enabled. pathetic, i know.

suggestions???

Now you need to try each of the drives that aren't showing up individually. Still boot off your windows drive but just have one other drive connected at a time.

Epic - You’re on my black list so that basically means you’re f***ed. If you apologize within 12 hours I may remove you. It's all up to you now.

If you are trying to use a HDD or any ide device on the RAID controller on a fresh install of windows you MUST have the RAID controller drivers installed and the controller enabled in BIOS naturally otherwise it aint gonna see s***.

If you have to set it to something in BIOS choose IDE mode (unless you are actually using a RAID array)

Finally got it fixed. No clue why this worked, but I went to the ASUS website and downloaded the raid drivers from there.

I went to my device manager and updated with these drivers. Reboot and worked perfectly.

Thanks to everyone for your help!!!
