This thread appears to be broken, other similar threads on korb's story also appear broken and the story itself for copy/pasting doesn't seem to be floating around through search function.
Does anybody have an .rtf or word document etc. saved somewhere that they wouldn't mind firing off in an email to me please?

sin308 at the gmail dawt com

Alternatively throw it up on a webspace to right clicky save-as..
Would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

So your the one who wrote that eh' Korbs?

I've just got my job offer from the Army (Australian Regular Army), and will be heading off to Kapooka in around 3 weeks time. Ive read that story many many, many times, and given it to lots of people to read aswell. Its a phenominal recount of life in Kapooka, and has given me (and many others in my position) a good idea of what to expect (very indepth detail; also, I'll keep my eyes peeled for "These Corporals, These Men").

After filling out hundreds of forms; mental, physical and psycological tests, research in my chosen field, and the final interview, success has never been sweeter... I've been given the A-OK, and I can't bloody wait.

ahh, I've never seen/read that story before either - very interesting indeed

almost tempting to join simply to get my pasty arse into shape and learn how to shoot a gun

i can't imagine myself crying simply from dudes shouting abuse at ya but I guess you never know until you're there

you're probably right, i think i used to tear up easier than most. I think my army experience has made me a lot tougher in that respect, though.

edit:

I'm permanently moving to the UK, I'm 24 atm and I did ARTC in 2003. I also enjoy walks in the rain and candle lit dinners. My favourite colour is green :p

hahah ^^.
What will you be doing in the UK mate? My best mate just came back from 6 months in London, and saw a guy stabbed to death just because he asked some Palestinian men to stop throwing "hot chips" at his girlfriend... crazy.

I'm going in as an Electrician (will get my ticket in the Army; I'm 19 btw) so I'll serve in the Royal Australian Engineer Corps; in either:
a Construction Squadron or
a Combat Engineer Regiment.

I was offered a position to become a Combat Engineer; but turned it down due to the final qualifications after discharge, the transition to civilian lifestyle would leave you with practically nothing, sure you can "blow s*** up" but what good is that really...

Also, part of the Electrical traning is completing the SAME 12 week Combat Engineer course at SME. So technically, I'll have learnt the same basic skills that they do; leaving me with the best of both worlds.

I left a Bachelor of Music (Classical Piano) at the Conservatorium of Music to pursue this, so I'll be wanting something with substance when I leave...

EDIT: Just off to to another PFA (Pre-Enlistment Fitness Assessment) at the Defence Force Recruiting Centre :)

Everyone does basic training.. No matter what you're going in for, if you can hold a gun, you will.

Sorry Makaveli, I think you missunderstood me; Every recruit does "Basic Recruit Training" which is a 45 day Course at ARTC (Army Recruit Training Centre) which is at Blamey Barracks, Kapooka, Wagga Wagga, NSW.

If you are an ARA (Australian Regular Army) soldier, you will spend an additional 35 days completing the "Advanced Recruit Training" where you further hone in on the skills taught at Basic Training, and learn new skills.

BUT; after that, soldiers can head off anywhere in AUS to undertake JT (Job Training). Combat Engineers complete a 12 Week Course at SME (School Of Military Engineering) at Moorebank NSW, are then fully qualified, and serve the rest of their Initial Minimum Service Period wherever they are required to be.

I will undertake 12 months at ASEME (Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers); a further 12 months with a RAE (Royal Aus. Engineers) Unit, spending my time training on-the-job; and then complete the EXACT SAME 12 week Combat Engineer course at SME where I learn the same basic skills that they do; my job will require me to work along-side a Combat Engineer Regiment.

thus, I undertake the exact same training as a CE, getting the best of both worlds ;)

Oh ok, My fault. I've done alot of reading into what i plan to sign up as, I listen my preferences on my MYHQ.com.au Profile as, 1.Rifleman 2.Combat engineer 3.4RAR, Commando unit.

I've done alot of research into these specific jobs, and the training it requires.

I should hopefully be able to put in my form by the end of the year.

Hey Korb did you lose a lot of weight or gain much muscle from the training?

Crizane: actually, i came out in worse shape than i went in. But thats because i was training so hard beforehand. That was great, because it meant the PT wasn't that difficult for me.

However, most people hadn't done too much training, so they gained a lot of fitness and strength at ARTC.

I remember getting a bollocking from a PTI towards the end of the 7 weeks. When you first arrive, you have to do an intial fitness test, then you do another one right at the end to see how much you had improved.

In my final one, i did about 20 less pushups and was a minute or two slower on the run. They obviously thought i had just been slacking off and not working hard enough. heh.
