You've probably heard about Google releasing a censored version of its search engine in China. Have a look at this example of how it works:

Google.com Image search
Google.cn Image search

I don't blame Google. China is one of the largest countries in the world and to lose that market in regards to usage and clicks would have been terrible for them.

Blame the government, not Google I say

Yes lets all blame Google since media censorship is unique to them *rolls eyes*

Yeah quite interesting that they'd break thier motto "do no evil" for the blue sky market in China. That slashdot article has link to Yahoo article about it which was quite an interesting read.

Edit: Damn that link natslvr post on slashdot isn't the one I was talking about. I was refering to this one: Google's Action Makes A Mockery Of Its Values

And this Yahoo article

I wonder how they did this cheaply
image processing is effective for an explicit domain, but with a billion random images forget about it

they must have a million google monkeys populating metadata sheets

Excuse the noobness of this question, but what would stop the chinese people from using say google.com.au or google.com ? Wouldn't it come down to their service providers filtering this sort of thing and banning the use of the site I just mentioned?

My (limited) understanding is, Chinese Internet is heavily regulated. There are no ISPs that allow access to non-sanctioned sites - that is, its not possible for them to get even get to google.com.au.

I could be completely wrong, but that's what I've heard.
