A client of mine designs catalogs for underwear and when she receives the images from the photgrapher, they are quite large 400mb+ tiff files. She has a high end desktop pc but it isnt handling it well. Keeping in mind the pictures have to go into magzines so quality is very important, is there a better format it can be in thats not so big and is more manageable.
Thanks |

Lots of RAM will definitely help, but if she's doing anything with those big phat files that newspaper and magazine people are in love with so much there's probably not a lot she can do format-wise. Using a lossless compressed format won't help because it'll just get uncompressed in memory when she's manipulating it anyway.

Yeah get more RAM, with print quality pics there isn't much choice, the pics will always be huge no matter what.

I've only got 1gig of RAM and when I open 100meg tiff files it takes about 5 secs to open. Once the pic is on screen I just use the magnify option and scroll around instead of having the pic full screen. But I find once the image is loaded everything works perfectly.

The likes of Photoshop and Pagemaker should handle the large files alot more smoothely than say windows picture+fax viewer, but I assume that since she's a designer she'd be using one of those.
More ram + modify scratch disc options in her design programs |

Maybe they should look into Mac options for RAW file stuff. I was no great fan of them before they decided to use Intel cpus instead of Motorolas. Programs like Adobe Lightroom and Aperture with a macked out Apple look like they run like liquid in the demo videos.
