I'm looking for a thread where there was discussion aout the origin of marriage.

I remember being surprised that marriage wasn't derived from religion and am now having a argument with someone at work about it, who thiks it did. I also thought this until it was discussed in this certain thread.

jog any memories?

I've searched, but we all know the quality of the search function here!

I vaguely recalled that discussion. IIRC think it was Obes reply that has the content you wanted. But for the life of me I can't think of the subject/content :(

Hmmm...this sounds like it would be an interesting topic. May have to do some reading up on it.

BTW, what are ppl's thoughts on marriage? Do ppl think that marriage should purely be a religious thing? Do ppl think marriage *should* have any place in our legal system in our understanding of living arrangements (and *hence* also social security rights, etc)? Or do other ppl (like me) think that there *should* be some other kind of ceremony articulated that allows all couples (straight/gay/lesbian, whatever) to "unite" and laws (surrounding social security, etc) should be based around this?

Something I've been thinking about recently...

I'm not getting married in a church, nor am I having a big wedding. Probably just have a BBQ with a few friends over.

No kids allowed.

HAHA if you put it like that, yes :P

I reckon a BBQ wedding would be cool :) Nice and cheap too! I mean what's the point in getting married anyway, after 6 months defacto they can take half your s***. Pre-nup ftw.

It was based on religous grounds more then likely, then again a lot of religions were also the law (so legal = religious and vice versa).
But its a legal contract these days.

People might go to a church to make it, but they go to a laywer to break it.

I thought it was something to do with the sale of women back in the day.

That's what the whole dowry thing was about, "Here take my daughther and these fatted calves and a bunch of frankincense and bugger orf." (Mum and Dad breathe a sigh of relief as their 13 y.o. troublesome and less-than-virginal daughter is whisked away to become a babymaker and occasional fleshy funpark for some ox hunting behemoth)
