The AusGamers mail server has suffered a minor catastrophic failure; all mail to any of the AusGamers domains is down for the count. We're working on the problem but it is hardware related and as such we have no ETA for a fix. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Update: This has been resolved.

aah wells, such is life.

backing up mail on a busy mail server is a very difficult thing to do. usually solutions like RAID are trusted with the data and all that is backed up is configuration etc.

Didn't Jim start back at work today? I think there's the catastrophic failure right there! He found out you hired Fuzzy while he was travelling the country in his H2 and went nuts smashing servers with his massively powerful fists of fury.

Good question .. what would you know. You'd leave the IP of the main server offline until you can get the real server online again. Yes there should be at least one backup MX which in this situation would be storing the mail it it's active ( then later deferred ) queue until the qgl mail server is back up. You'd then run an ETRN to let the backup MX know to start delivering the mail, or just wait and let it do it in it's own time.

If you dumped all mail into an mbox file you'd have to do some clever parsing of the file to split it back up into individual mails plus the mbox file would get very big very quick using up more resourses than necessary. a maildir wouldn't be much better. Instead you'd let your MX which should have a nice resource friendly 2 or 3 level hash directory for it's spool ( incoming queues etc ) do it's job without unecessarily confusing the issue by doing extra work that's not needed.

And for all you know the "mail.ausgamers.com" could point to a geographically disparate load balanced network of MXs thus not requiring the traditional list of backup MXs.

also, exim does not pwn postfix.
