I'm having a problem with my browsers. When i try to go to different sites, for example www.commbank.com.au, after about a minute wait a message pops up in mozilla saying

"the connection was refused when attempting to contact www.commbank.com.au"

and ie just shows the usual cannot load page screen. This is happening on a few sites and its getting pretty annoying. I have googled and come up with nothing, i have turned off my firewalls, allowed all cookies etc and nothing is helping :(

Any ideas on how to fix it or what the problem is?

I had a similar problem when I was downloading too much at the same time. Stop your downloads, and then try. Worked for me. . .

Weird if its only a handful of sites - check your proxy settings and make sure nothing has hijacked them? Are you going through a separate router/firewall that might be misconfigured?

i have netgear router which has firewall disabled, i have deleted the software firewall i was using and disabled windows firewall.

I looked on google and it said somewhere that i should have my tools>options>connection settings set to direct connection to the internet

Its really annoying, I looked on google for commbank net bank login and got a direct login and it worked. But the main page wont load for some reason :S

(i stopped all downloads aswell and it did nothing)

Just either allow cookies, or make an allow exception for the site. If it still doesn't work, make sure there is nothing modifying/removing cookies (ie, ff extension, zonealarm, privacy cleaning tools etc).

When you login from another place, I think it invalidates your last session or something which will log that computer out.

Usually this is caused by too high of an MTU.

Try running drtcp to lower it. Try 1450 or even as low as 1400 to see if the sites are accessable again.

In the command promt type "netstat" and have a look at how many entries come up. You should have about 1 - 8 normally. If you see a s***load then you need to clean your system because all those things are taking up your bandwidth. "netstat" basically tells you how many open tcp-ip connections are on your computer.
Obviously there could be other causes of your problem but this is a very likely one.

disney works for me, my mtu is 1500

my mums computer was doing this/is doing this, and when ever she was connected to the lan, everones computer would really slow down, after a while my computer started doing this, so i formated. fixed the problem with my computer, i would say you have a virus

id be checking your hosts file for any weird entries.. maybe some sort of phishingness gone wrong for commbank.com.au? ok, so maybe that doesn't explain all the other random sites..

I have noticed that the transparent proxy with tpg sometimes plays up. It doesnt allow me to access some sites.

Long shot, but are you running Peer Guardian? If so, make sure HTTP is allowed, or manually allow the sites that are getting blocked.

I doubt that would be the cause of the problem.

If he had something sapping ALL of his bandwidth 24/7 to prevent him from visiting websites, he would definitely notice that he's out of download/upload quota and capped.

Also (almost OT) whoop: is that the MTU of your box? If so .. what's the MTU of your modem/router? The packet might be broken down by your router and transmitted successfully to access disney.

Maybe I shouldn’t have said bandwidth but if you run “netstat” it will simply tell you if you have crap on your computer like spyware or Trojans. These will cause your internet to come up with connection refused errors. Just try it.

MTU is the maximum block that can be transmitted "on the next step" it has no effect on the end to end transmission, just the next step. Basically I wouldn't f*** with it.
But for dialups 576 seemed good. 1500 for ethernet/nic. For ADSL either 1454 or 1492. But I wouldn't play with it.

OK, then perhaps you guys should explain to everyone why ISP Representatives and others consistently bring up the MTU + Disney (and other sites) issue.

I read the little bit on whirlpool about MTU + Disney and to put it simply I think the writer just put it there to fill the page with options.
There are a million things that are more likely to be wrong with any internet connection before you would even consider a MTU problem.
Windows and all the home routers have the MTU set at the correct size for maximum compatibility. Any ISP representative should know that the default MTU sizes are always best. Imagine if every user has to f*** around with MTU settings just to use the internet properly.

if you set the mtu higher than your internet can handle doesn't it a) fragment the packet or b) just not send it at all?
