I know heaps of chicks who are good looking, on the way to successful careers, smart, have good jobs, good cars etc, but I wouldn't date em cos i'm just not into them.

True for some people and false for the others.

If it is true for the person your talking about, they arnt worth it and there is a huge chance that a person like that would never be in a stable relationship anyway (as they would never be satisified with the person they are with).

A person who belives they could do better probably has self-esteem issues and a big part of the reason for dateing a person is how much they increase their own social standing amongst their peer's, thus making them feel better about themselves. A 'trophy wife' is a good example.
The same applies to a person who thinks they CANT do better, in this case the person again has self esteem issues and basically uses the other person as medication for their issues. It is too much to ask of somebody to be responsible for the happiness of the person they date. It is hard enough for 1 person to look after their own happiness let alone someone elses. (This dosnt mean that a partner shouldnt bring happiness, just that they should not be the sole reason for happiness). Relationships based on this sort of bond are really unstable and tend to lend themselves to abuse of some sort. Jealosy would be fairly high in the person who needs the other, as they would be terribly afraid that other person would see their 'uselessness' and leave them for someone else.

To answer your question:

A real person would go out/date another person is because they think that they are BOTH physically and mentally attractive.
Sometimes you connect so well with the mental aspect at first that the physical part hardly matters, and that can be enough to start dating.
A real person wouldnt date another because there is no mental attraction, they are both just too disimilar in too many aspects, or that the mental and phycial attractions are not enough to warrent a intimate relationship thus the good ol 'lets just be friends' line :D
