Ok I've been doing a lot of searching around for a notebook, and TPG seems to have the best deal. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's the oldskool screen - not one of the new shiny type "crystalbrite" or whatever screens. But I guess I can deal with that. What do u guys think of this deal? The $1398+postage one. Any other suggestions? I've look on ebay but I can't really afford more than 1500 total.

Yeah the graphics is the only real let down, and i did notice the shiny screens at harvey norman were very glary.
What are the options for upgrading a video card in notebooks? I guess that notebooks are "come as they are" and u dont/cant really change anything in them...? |

What are the options for upgrading a video card in notebooks? zero. we're all waiting around for some bright spark to build a lappy with an external pci-ex port in it. |

Actually its not uncommon for cheap-arse s***box notebooks to be hot enough to burn desks. A lot of the cheaper Acers are notorious for this. I've had one melt the anti-static rubber coating on the benches at work. It seems a lot of the cheaper notebooks don't have the best cooling solutions/designs and as a result get really hot.

ok. i got a tpg laptop (amd xp2400 in it), and the battery i got with it is from the same batch that guy whos desk was burnt down. they replaced my battery free of charge.
since then the laptop has worked flawlessly, ive had it on for 2 months straight (no s***, wasnt even put into hibernate mode). and mine didnt get too hot, can use it comfortbly on my lap. now those apple powerbooks, they will cook ya gonads |

It has pretty nice specs, but I would be wary as to how much Support you will get if things go bad.
ie. Why would TPG charge only $1400 for that when if you bought it in a mainstream brand it would be a lot more |

Doesn't say how long you can run it off battery power. Most no brand (not all) laptops don't last that long at all.

These current TPG laptops are new...they updated their range like a week ago.
Got rid of all the Intel chip ones, and upgraded the AMD's to Turions. Apart from that they're pretty much still the same though I think. I think I'll get one, can't find any other offers that come close at all. |

They look fairly decent, havent heard much about those new Turion chips though. Can anyone elaborate on performance / battery life ?
And are those the only two versions available ? I dunno if I would be too keen on a 15" Laptop |

I'm leading towards this puppy. If you don't order Win XP with it it knocks $130 or something off the price straight up. |

Have a 15.4" Widescreen Dell (9100) and the screen while VERY clear and good to look at isn't wonderful, and the unit is admittedly pretty bloody heavy ugly. The built-in subwoofer, 128 meg Radeon 9700, desktop CPU and memory more than make up for it to me. Hell with a DVI out I'm thinking about getting a nice LCD for home to plug it into when I'm not mobile with it.
I would much rather sacrifice some battery life and screen size to get gfx and processing power - but then again this is my development and gaming machine in one so I may have slightly different priorities. |

JMR: Well the price of that lappy is pretty much comparable to a desktop with the same specs!
So I'd rather have the option of portability. It's not a 2nd computer, it will be my only computer. |
