hi

a family friend asked me to get them a new pc and set it up etc etc so I did and they had copied all their old docs to a floppy disk, trouble is I didn't get them a floppy for the new PC :p

So i've got a floopy sitting here with data that was saved to it under Win ME, when I read it under XP it says the disk is unformatted - can this be true?

A disk written to in ME can't be read in XP?

Or have I farked something up?

sounds like the magetic layer of the flopy has been fooked by em emission's :(

Tryed another flopy drive?

also ME / XP format the disk as fat16 so yer not a compatibilty problem.

Please tell me your joking and your not that dumb :/

Heardy, does every disk do it or just a couple? Have you tried a second floppy drive, maybe you have on in a laptop or something? If not, grab a USB floppy drive and try that, doesnt work take it back and get a refund :P

Failing that, It sounds like they wrote BACKUP on the disk and put it on the fridge with magnet.

I should have, but in the end i didnt want the responsibility of them constantly comming back to me with problems.Once you take money for fixing it,it sorta becomes your problem.

No cash the first time, then its "You know how you fixed my mouse, well my hard drive just caught fire and its your fault so i shouldnt have to pay any more money. Fix it."

If a computer-illiterate mechanic or handyman wants help with his PC, help him immediately but don't accept cash! Later, ask him for favours with your car. That way, you both exchange services but the fact that he has to return favours stops him for asking for your help too often.

I know a guy who use to fix people's PCs for money in his spare time. The local Games R Us give him there details whenever they came in complaining about their computers. Most people just want someone that can speak to them in a language they can understand, doesn't make them feel stupid when they don't know basic computer things, and can get the damn thing working again and help them keep it working.

There's decent money in it if you don't have a real job. This is nearly 10 years ago now, and the charge-out rate was $75 for the first hour and $50 an hour after that, with GRU taking $25 for the first hour nothing after that. So $50 an hour to him.

With just a simple referrer like that he was easily doing two house-calls an evening, most people he'd never hear from again, but he'd hear from their friends. "Oh we had this nice guy drop around and fix our PC, here's his number".

It was pre-GST so i don't know how all that would work now, he'd just give them a cash receipt, and add all the income (and expenses) to his yearly tax.

If you speak good english, don't mumble, are presentable then there's plenty of people prepared to pay good money to just get their pc working again, and aren't happy with the service from their local PC store, staffed by people they don't understand, who overcharge, talk to them like they are morons and rip them off.
