NWN Stratics organised a huge chat with 17 team members from Bioware and Black Isle over IRC. attendance peaked at ~180 members to witness this event first hand and to glean some valuable insights into how this game is going to run. RPGplanet have a more raw log. For those in the dark about Neverwinter Nights, it is an extension of the infinity engine Bioware used to create Baldur's Gate and subsequent spinoffs. In this case it introduces a new element for multiplayer, that of someone being able to play the DM. DMs are the heart and soul of a good pencil and paper based roleplaying adventure, and it is the use of another human to guide you through the story that has got everyone all excited about it. EG: - If you beat up some old lady in the street, the DM can change the elements of the game so that people react differently to you. You may even find her son is the mayor and sics the whole police force after you. - Instead of the party being pounded by an orc tribe, the DM can step in and make the orcs a little less agressive. - If you ask an NPC a question that they don't have an answer for, the DM can take control ofthe NPC and type back a response, or talk directly through the NPC. The ability to change the game more accurately due to the players actions is what the DM is for. You could also play with a silent DM and have the game scripted much like Baldur's Gate, but the ability to play online with a group of friends through a properly run scenario will be an experience instead of a game. Along with the game is one huge world building engine. This allows DMs to design their own worlds, script plots, create entire modules and link them to the living world of Neverwinter Nights. Thanx to TypoDemon for the lead. |
