DiSA2TA has pointed out on the forums something I've heard around the place - apparently the current issue of PC PowerPlay magazine contains the full version of Tribes on the cover CD (presumably a legit copy :) Might be a bid to get everyone to get into the game for the coming of Tribes 2, perhaps?

The Tribes cd on the cover of PC Powerplay mag is 100% free and is not a limited trail offer.PC Gamer has a CD with Ultima on it which is a 15 day trail thats probably what you had heard.

I gave Tribes ago today and to be honest I thought it was a total waste of time, but some of you may like it but I doubt it.

PC Powerplay has some good demo's on it such as Oni,Mechwarrior 4 and Colin Mcrae rally 2.0.At this stage I have only given Tribes and CM rally ago and although Tribes was alittle disapointing CM rally looked realy good.I particularly liked the fact that one of the demo tracks was the Aussie one and boy don't I love them dirt tracks.

Just a quick question for you all.Have any of you heard/read anything about the game Red Faction that due to be released in April?

i put tribes on (got it off a mates cover disc) yesterday. i just cant remember what to do ...those scout planes are fun to crash though. i figure that tribes 2 must be going gold any time now if they can afford to give tribes away for nothing. and it isnt time limited as someone already mentioned...no cdkey either. if you are going to put it on dont do the auto update thing cos it doesnt work (i dont know why i bothered trying) and the 1.0 to 1.11 patch is less than 10 meg anyway so its not to bad even for all the poverty stricken dial-up people to download. i think there will be a big surge in the number of people playing tribes now, especially since most peoples pcs can handle the game with no dramas (unless you are silly enough to have only 64mb ram)

I think its more a case of trying to bribe everyone to read such a crap mag... There complete lack of support for organisations such as this has never ceased to astound me.

I have been told by a number of people in the industry that Ryan (NEXT, producer of PCPP) has said that he regards QGL and Ausgamers as his opposition, which of course is complete lunacy since we dont publish any magazine.

All I can say is die next die!!

Here is an example of the lengths next media goto, in order not to provide any information on qgl or Ausgamers.

Check THIS page out, notice a complete lack of qgl in there? then just out of intrest check THIS page out, most of the clans listed are _hosted_ by qgl.

I'm serious when I say dont support a magazine that fails to support YOUR community.

Yes, I always thought it odd that they'd have a lot of other lans and stuff in their lan section but not once have I seen QGL listed - hell they even had GGF in it. Seems a little off to me.

*points at Atomic mag*

*points at QGL and AUSGAMERS mentioned on page 9 in Short Circuits*

*applauds atomic and AJB publishing*

*points at PCPP*

*develops acronym. Pretty Crap Petty People.*

*boos PCPP and Next*

furthermore, how can AusGamers/QGL be competition to PCPP honestly. I DONT SEE NO FREAKIN MAG!

pcpp is just gay

and obviously that gayness extends to their publishers

PCPP ran a Queensland lan special in the latest issue, no mention of QGL of course, depsite the fact that its the biggest in Aust, and way better than those ghey Mackay ones they do publish.
Not a bad tech section in the magazine though, and it is better than those ludicrously priced pom ones. The only gripe is the out of dateness - I remember reading in an issue '3DFX to stop producing boards' after they had already been bought by NVidia!
BTW, I posted a note about this the day the issue came out, hardly anyone replied though. Guess im upopualar :(

How stupid is that, see it goes to show that their interest in gamers is only as valid as their interest in themselves, to me that’s plain misinformation..

How much of that extends beyond their little problem with us, and do they have other little problems with developers for instance that they may perceive as a threat??

Food for thought....

I for one wouldnt want to read something that will only focus on gaming as long as that gaming only suits them.

Thats an interesting though, but none of you really have any proof of this, do you? As you said earlier Term, it simply doesnt make any sense!
Suppose you could go through the mag and look for it, or email someone, but I am sure they would think you a raving lunatic. If you do find anything, post it ASAP!

Well no it isnt stupid, Ryan from next rang me on my mobile on three seperate occations asking if I would enter an affiliation agreement with Nextonline.

Since I didnt see any benifit to this for qgl at the time (all he was offering was a link to qgl) I said no thank you we werent intrested.

Since then next have gone out of their way to exclude QGL from anything that they post, I'm sure the smaller lans that have their links on the page I posted above were not asked to enter an Affiliation agreement yet they are still listed.

Basicly Moridin, you are looking for an innocent explanation where there is none.

Errr hello.

The proof? What more proof do you need that the network which is providing by far and away the most popular LANs - IN MOST OF THE STATES IN AUSTRALIA - doesn't rate a mention on their comprehensive little clan / lan roundup.

Competition is one thing, but it's counterproductive to feign ignorance about everything you construe as competition.

Bottom line is that Next / PCPP / Hyper aren't about supporting gaming communities, they are about making money. Nothing wrong with that, but just because they have had some demographic expert tell them that there's money to be made with a community-based gaming focus does not MAKE them one - you have to prove yourself, and by ignoring the fact that Ausgamers/QGL exist, they obviously are not.

Just look at telstra/playnow/wireplay - it takes more than cash injections to create a gaming community.

I shall have to remember not to buy any of their magazines from now on. Not that I've bought any in a while. The news is always too out of date on the stuff I'm interested in. Main reason I buy such mags is for the software as I'm only a poor modem user.
Still, I might write in or something asking them why they haven't listed QGL.

Gosh, and I thought only the online game news site world was bitchy :)

Actually, IMHO, any organisation/network that skews its coverage against any other group is acting against the interests of the net community. It used to be that webmasters helped each other. Heck, the net *began* as a free sharing of information without bias!

That applies to everyone, PCPP, QGL, BluesNews, and the humble little startup page next door. Competition is one thing, nasty parochialism is another. Just another reason I'm glad the page I'm involved with is ultimately run for love and not profit.

BTW Tribes is *great*. Can't wait for T2.

Hmmm...that is quite interesting. Have you actually emailed PCPP with details about the LAN before it happens? I think they only report on submission they receive from LAN admins. Be that as it may, the largest lan in australia was conspicous by its absence from PCPP, in any way, shape or form.

heh, that'd be cool, prolly a logistical nightmare to work out though.

I'd have to agree on the PCPP thing though, bunch of no good fagets. Admitedly I haven't bought a computer mag (apart from development ones) for quite a while, but theres no way I'd even pick up PCPP in the newsagent to browse through it now. I think I can safely say, after reading my way through this thread and having a look at a few of the links posted above, I've lost any and all respect I ever had for PCPP / Next / Hyper.

pcpp s***ted me off when they have unreal 97% (or was it 98%)

the game runs like crap on 900mhz pcs with gf2s with 256meg of ram

and it was released back when p166s with v1s were good

Sure it does neff. If it runs s***, its not because of hardware, thats for sure. I was more pissed when they gave Tiberium Sun 96% and Red Alert 2 93% (I think). Ill still read it. At least it gives me something to browse on the bus to uni et al.

Tiberium sun I wouldn't give a high score to, that game was flawed in some very fundamental ways. Red Alert 2 though, I thought that was awesome. Lots of fun, nicely balanced, lots of interesting units, I had a great time with it :)

Doesn't make PCPP any less ghey though.
