Cerb you are incorrect.

Our vintage is quite an intelligent race of people

Once you get below a certain age, for some reason, the IQ drops horribly.

Grammar and Spelling skills are nonexistent, recall of most historic dates are nonexistent... basically the newer generating of young people are f***ing DUMB

The OP's posted earlier proves that it's the education system. Hey i know that some of you people might actually have half a brain, that's why you're lazy c***s.

High School scores mean jack s*** about intelligence, just hard work and an attention span, something most of you clearly lack.

Can anyone go for at least 10 replies without referring to Counterstrike or "I OWN J00"?

I thought not

Cerb it's not intelligence, it's the f***ed up teachers and style of teaching. I was lucky to have awesome teachers that actually used humor for teaching and other s***, but still enough sense to discipline the f***wits correctly.

For your info:

Maths B: HA
Maths C: HA
Physics: HA
IPT: HA
Accounting: VHA
English: SA

OP = 5

Now THAT'S a fluke =)

(Accounting teacher was a shrivelled old bat with a gherkin up her ass and a mouth like a cats ring)

Anyone else got a point?

Okay, what the hell brought this on? I assume it's from somewhere in that "OP" thread, but it would be nice to know why you're saying I'm wrong.

Fluked a 5, huh?

Well I breezed through high school. I did the bare minimum of work, and did a lot of assignments the last few nights before they were due. I even made the odd stupid mistake on exams, but overall pretty much had everything sussed out pretty well. I loved physics (my teacher owned a valiant, and my friend and I dumped so much s*** on him about it. :) and chemistry (my chem teacher was pretty cool, too) and that showed in my marks.

They were:

Maths I: HA
Maths II: HA
English: HA
Physics: VHA
Chemistry: VHA
French: VHA

OP: 1

In the end, I was kind of shocked at my OP - I was expecting a 3, hoping for a 2, dreamed of a 1.

The thing was, my school had never got an OP 1 before, despite being a large school. There was not one, but two in my year. I drove past the school the other day, and on the sign out the front they're congratulating the three latest OP 1's. Not bad for a public school not known for anything much.

So are you saying that it was my teachers that deserve my OP 1, and not me?

The system is supposed to be quite fair when comparing school to school, because all the school's tests/assignments can be reviewed to determine whether that particular teacher/school was any harder/easier than any of the other teachers in the state. If your school had piss easy exams and assignments, etc, then it probably hurt your OP more than made it better.

OP's don't really mean much anyway - it just ranks you against everyone else in your year level in the state. My '94 OP 1 is not necessarily the same as this year's OP 1. They could be smarter than me, or vice versa. It just means in our respective year that we were in the top 2 percent in the state. That is all. It isn't necessarily any indication of IQ or anything.

But I do partly agree with you in that each year is seemingly less intelligent, but only from what I've seen at uni and at work as far as problem solving abilities and a general ability to think for oneself. But perhaps it is just my basis for reference is a bit biassed - most of my uni friends have OP 6's or higher.

High School scores mean jack s*** about intelligence, just hard work and an attention span, something most of you clearly lack.

Well, I don't work hard, and I have a fairly short attention span... figure out the rest for yourself. :)

21 in a couple of months

it seems anything in the teens can't speak or write for s***

... and unfortunately i'm a perfectionist and it s***s me to tears... and it's getting much f***ing worse

You don't know how much i cried when i saw a large business with the sign

Shirley's Fashion's

BAH!!!!

or "Fish and Chip's"

ffs

Oh i must congratulate you on your rant, from where it came i have nfi, but very well written =)

I came from a school that was equally full of op 1's as op 25's

So basically the school gets an average mark.

Oh and in school i didn't work hard nor do i have an attention span, but f***s me how, i actualy retained most of it =)

Did i say i did? No, i was merely criticising the dumb f***s out there =)

You were doing great there Einstein until you made that comment about your accounting teacher. No offence, but thats a tad hypocritical isnt it? Oh, and for the benefit of most of you ex-grade 12ers, OPs and High School grades dont mean s*** once you get to uni.
Noone cares anymore. Im sure the rest of the QGL university age peeps will back me up. I know that not one single person has asked me about my OP in my past 2 years since leaving high school. Once you get into a course, the past is irrelevant, its present performance only that counts.
Enjoy :)

Oh, and I agree about poor grammar in society today. It seems that its simply not part of the syllabus today. On forums such as these though, it doesnt count. I know I certainly cant be bothered to go back and proofread, its a waste of time.
My former school (The Gap SHS if anyone is interested) usually doesnt get more than 4-5 OP 1s, but they seem to focus more on the number of OP <10, which seems fairly smart to me. What public school did you go to Cerb? Lord knows there are few in Brisbane these days.

Some of the kid's I went to school with got realy great marks and went on to get big time degree's at uni.And thats all well and good but when it came to getting on in the real world they are without a doubt some of the dumbest people I know.

All school marks prove is that you learn well in a class room and as you know some people are geared to that kind of thing and do well at it.

I have been out working since I was 15 and I'm now 30 and if there is one thing that I have learnt and is school grades count for s*** in the real world. And the worst people to teach you about the real world are school teachers as they have mostly never had to live in it.

All the teachers I have ever met have gone from primary school - high school - uni and then straight back to school so what the f*** would they know about living in the real world.Their whole lives have been spent with their nose's in a book.

Well, Einstein, I also hate it when apostrophes get into places where they shouldn't be, and I couldn't agree more with you, but I've got one little problem with your post about it...

"I came from a school that was equally full of op 1's as op 25's"

Well, that's just as rife as "Fish and Chip's."

You see it in lots of advertising around the place: "DVD'S HALF PRICE!"

And to show how common the problem is, I quote Taipan: "Some of the kid's I went to school with . . . went on to get big time degree's at uni."

I rest my case :P

Einstein: I'm almost 24 now. Not that it makes much difference.

But I know I am really picky about spelling and grammar and some of my friends made the worst mistakes on uni assignments, but most lecturers care more about technical errors than grammatical. I mean who cares if you can't read and write if you can write a faster sorting algorithm in C. :)

The grammatical errors here piss me off severely. Especially the "your"/"you're" ones... :)

It is true, though - it's not what your OP is that counts. It's demonstrated abilities that does, and it's one thing uni gives you a taste of, but it doesn't compare to real-world experience.

I so sick to death of hearing about how hard high school students have it now what a load of crap.School has never been easay it's just now people put up with these whinging little f***ers who think they have it so hard.

Hell the prospects for kids these days are better now than they have been for almost 20 years. And they still cry about how much persure they are under to get results at school.f*** you'd think they are the only ones to ever have that happen to them.

But b4 I upset all of you youngsters I know that not all of you bitch all the time.

What gave me the fricking s***s during high school was taht my parents weren't exactly loaded, but they only gave me money when I really needed it and if I wanted it, I'd have to help my dad do tiling, etc, in order to earn it.

Then I'd sit in form class and hear others saying "hey, Austudy payment today. Might get some ciggas and get pissed"

That's not right in my mind. Even when the company my dad worked for went bust and he was suddenly unemployed I still couldn't get it. Even when I was at uni, and over 18, and having to travel 50km each way to get to uni. It's crap how they still go by your parents' income even after you're 18, and supposedly an adult in your own right.

Anyway. My bitch for the night... may be more to come if you're all lucky. :)

Taipan: I wasn't complaining about your spelling, just using it as an example.

What I was REALLY complaining about, was the amount of similar mistakes in advertising. When it's meant to be professional, it should be correct. Ask any sales rep guy... (can't think of the correct name)

Anyway, if you writing a book, and the title was somethig like "Retrun Of the anoying Bstard's,", chances are it wouldn't sell too well. (Unless some critic called it 'modern art'...)

See? Stupidity is catching!

The "Fish and Chip's" was an EXAMPLE

Oh and cerb, don't even get me started on the bought/brought =)

Morindin: Good point, but where do you come off abusing me in the middle of a perfectly good argument and you've never met me.

GGF

(And that's NOT the LAN)

High School didn't mean s*** no, what really matters now is how much of your Uni degree you have finished, or how much field experience you have.

In my case it's the field experience keeping my ass employed, and when it gets unemployed (c***ing bosses) i usually don't have a problem finding another...

However, i'm largely lazy when i'm sitting at my cable so go figure =)

Money running out soon, maybe should find more.

In my opinion, I don't think a sound ability to spell and construct reasonable grammar is really important today, with the advent of word processors that can pick most of the mistakes.

That proved a disadvantage for me as I did strive to perfect my spelling, punctuation and grammar. Yeah, you can say I am a perfectionist. Peers I knew that were great with verbal expression but had absolutely pathetic writing skills got better marks in English than me, solely because of the word processor.

For your information, I completed my high schooling this year (2000) under the Queensland system. My results were:
- Chemistry - HA
- English - HA
- Information Processing & Technology - HA
- Mathematics B (Maths I/Maths Unit 3) - VHA
- Mathematics C (Maths II/Maths Unit 4) - SA
- Physics - SA

This landed me an OP 5. I didn't work hard. There was no need. My teachers thought, well, since there'll be no one kicking your ass to do work in uni, then let's train you for it this year and not kick your ass. None of my teachers checked homework and only some bothered you if it looked as if you weren't paying attention in class.

I don't think the teacher standards (teachers, text books) are up to scratch either. The concepts seemed too complex and the teachers didn't strive to make it all that interesting. By the way, I attended a Brisbane private Catholic school.

As a result, I didn't do a bit of homework and I found myself playing Counter-strike while I should have been studying for exams, because I didn't have a clue for some of the subjects. The subjects I did reasonably at, were the ones I did work for in class.

According to your theory, Einstein, high school is all hard work and an attention span. Since I didn't do or have any of that, and I am part of the new generation of dumbos, I guess I must have fluked it too.

.. young people these days are dumb.
.. young people these days are whingers.
.. when I was that young it was just as hard/harder/impossible.
.. everyone's grammar is going to s*** and as a result the world will no doubt soon face the devastation of the Armageddon as the four horsemen: "Punctation","Spelling","Structure","Does-It-Make-f***ing-Sense", scour and flay the decadent population for their unforgivable descent into grammatical incompetency.

Or whatever.

A few things. Everyone seems to be going to great lengths to assure everyone else that the OP you got at school has nothing to do with your "IQ" or "how smart you are", without bothering to define what they mean by those things.

What makes you "smart"? Some posts seem to think it's how much money you make, or how you do in the "real world". Some might argue that it's what OP you got, QCS score, GPA. Who cares? What do we mean by smart?

Some people can go to highschool, do no homework, do assignments the night before, study for exams on the bus on the way in, get straight VHAs and an OP 1. Is that person "smart"? What if they do that, then aren't making $60k by 30 off 3 days a week? Are they "dumb" after all?

Have I made a single point yet or just asked a whole bunch of rhetorial questions?

Well I guess I'd better state a few opinions of my own. I enjoy reading and when I overcome the apathetic, western world, instant-coffee laziness that INFESTS our culture I enjoy writing also. From that bias then, I feel that people don't read enough. Probably the single largest reason for the perceived lack of grammar in "younger" people these days. I'm sure no small part of the blame for this can be laid at the feet of the PC.

At the same time, one might argue that the importance of grammar is lessening, with the real time environment of the growing internet. When you examine the functional role of grammar, roughly to minimise ambiguity and thus increase efficiency and reliability of communication, then you can postulate that the large bulk of information is exchanged in an unambiguous, fully reliable digital format. Something to consider at least.

I don't know. What am I saying?
* It's tempting to fall into the grammatical snobbery that seems in vogue with the grammatically savvy.
* I think highschool and uni are as "real life" as the grind of a job, and will probably comprise some of the most memorable times of your entire life. So to discount them as meaningless in terms of "real life" I think is silly. Every day is "real life".
* We should all eat less, exercise more and care more for people less fortunate than ourselves
* Q3Pong should be taken down and q3ctf replace it
* It's tempting just to keep writing this forever

Blah.

Finally someone who knows what the f*** they're actually talking about.

Your opinion could actually be the basis of my entire argument, so basically, the PC is to blame.

I didn't have that s*** when i was younger, so i read myself through one end of the local library to the other. I'm actually quite proud to say... thanks to all those years of reading, after being tested at school, i can read at 1200 words per minute and still grasp entire meaning.

I don't need calculus or theory to tell you that's pretty f***ing fast =)

I don't know, maybe it's because these days, all the little nippers are playing a bit of quake instead of kicking back with a good book for a couple of hours.

I think you've hit the nail right on the head there plok... but i still have strong faith that the education system has wavered from what it once was.

BAM!

Maybe because i read so many books it could account for my recall of most facts in science and nature and basically every f***ing field you can think of. How many of you younger peeps read a medical diagnosis and anatomy book in your spare time?

=)

Encyclopaedia Brittannica?

Was boring as all f***...

Informative though

Plok for all your writing ability you don't seem to be able to read and get someones point.

My point was this I never did very well at school because A)I could never see how s*** other than reading, writing and maths would be of f*** all benifit.
B)I hated being trapped in a class room everyday for f***ing hours.
The consiquence being that I never got very good grades.

However when it can to work I excelled I love to work and have enough smarts to get me through most if not all possible situations.Which is more than I can say for most of the ppl who I went to school with that got top marks.

The bottom line is that you don't have to get a top op to make something of yourself. As the school system is full of subjects that are totaly useless for the average student who is just going to get a normal job and not go on to uni.

And as far as kids bitching about how hard they get it now, they do.Hardly a week goes by were you don't see some stupid current affairs tv show featuring some crying little ingreats bitching about how hard life is.

It wasn't any easayer for me or anyone else for that matter. So to them all I have to say is shut the f*** up and get on with it like the rest of us.

I never claimed to by academicaly smarter than anyone but when it comes to work and turning most situations around to my favour I can keep up with the best of them.

how do u know that the subjects we do at school aren't getting harder ?

or maybe in some cases they aren't getting harder but in other schools they are. take for example my aunty's ex b/f he graduated 4 years before me. soo that menas he was sttill at uni when i asked him a simple yr 10 maths question. and he coudln't answer it.

maybe the school u went to isn't affering the same level of dificulty that alot of the teenage whingers are talking about. have u actually looked at these ppl's courses. no i doubt u have.

oh and for u to sit up there o ur grammatically correct high horse is so f***ed in the head. english aint ever been my best subject i don't even like knowing how to write a short story. i coduln't give. to me it's how well i (inhigh school) coudl write in turbo pascal 7 and delphi. not only that but to me when in physics the area of atomic physics came up. i got an A cause that s*** was interesting and was logical if u thought about it. just like chem and maths.

english never made sense to me thats not my area. i read book all the time. i've got quite a huge collection of books. from calculas and physics theory's /history right through to fantasy series like wot.

don't blame teh education system. if u want to learn then u will. and u can get out of it what ever u want. the thing is now days teachers aren't going to spend all their time teaching and correcting ppl who don't want to know about their respective subject. they tach those who want to learn. true u do ned to be tought a certain level of maths/eng to get by and every one can get there.

oh and some one said that being able to pul historical dates out of ur ass also helped to make u smart. wrong it helps to create an false image that ur smart. pulling dates don't mean s***. it's about as use full as saying 7*7 = 49. i mena who gives a f***ing s***.

personally i define some who is smart. as being some one who shows thought, logic, common sense AND proof. to often ppl mistake the lack of these qualitys for some one being dumb. it's more likely that the person is uninterested in what they are doing and dont' give it much thought. hence most likely u will only be recognized as inteligent in the area of ur expertise. cause thats what intrests u.
