http://www.ausgamers.com/images/features/ag_160_120_wow_rating.jpg The recent movements with Grand Theft Auto 4 and the OFLC reminded me of a question I posed to the OFLC a few years ago that had not been answered - why does World of Warcraft, unlike most other games on retail shelves, not have an OFLC classification?

The answer came through today. Check out our World of Warcraft OFLC shenanigans article for the story.

Quite the loophole. Although as mentioned in the article, I can see a GTA mmo being singled out by the OFLC.

and has no defined start and end.

Wrong. The defining start is when you create your character, and the defining end is when you are finished grinding a dungeon for days and days and days and weeks and weeks and weeks and months and months and... well ok I see now.

Yeah, I never even noticed it was missing the usual OFLC rating on the box. All it has is the thing saying TEEN - content rated by ESRB, whatever that place is.

The thing people don't realize is, Warcraft is above getting an OFLC rating because it's so ginormous that nothing can stop it!!!

Oh nice. So all they have to do is put a product-activation like thing in it, to ensure you have a net connection, and it becomes 'online only'. I mean, that's the same as people gaining access to hidden content only by hacking the game making it restricted, right? :)

the defined end date is when the penny drops that you are ploughing your time and money into a giant sink.

The Canberra Times picked up this story and wrote an article about it - Nats scanned it for me; if you're interested you can check it out here.

Apologies for the late comment.

Very good work here, Trog. Highlighted a huge gap in current censorship laws (and gave me a free article at the same time!) Noice.

I'll be lurking to steal more scoops (with full credit of course).
