Hi all.
I've come to consult the wisdom of QGL about a word. My girly is trying to use the word 'buys' in a sentence. I'm trying to say that buys is a bad word and should be using bought, will buy, or buying instead. So, QGL, would you use the word 'buys' in a sentence or construct a better sentence without using the word buys. My girly used this one: The man goes down the road and buys chocolate for his woman. How else would you think to write this sentence without using buys? |

The man goes down the road and buys chocolate for his woman. Eh I'd probably say that......but if i was writing a essay or something i'd say "bought chocolate for his woman" ps - was it a hint? for you to buy her chocolate? ;) |

I have to be the first to point it out, you lost your argument instantly for misspelling grammar.

i think her version is ok in present tense
past tense would be "The man went down the road and bought some chocolate for his woman" but the real question is why the f*** is he doing this for her? best alternative should be "f*** of bitch go buy me some chocolate and a six pack while you're there" |

if you use "goes" and "bought" the tenses disagree and it sounds retarded
perhaps "goes down the street to buy chocolate" |

If it was present tense wouldn't it be, 'The man is going down the road to buy chocolate for his woman.'?

that's present progressive tense
"goes down the street" could describe e.g. a regular or habitual occurrence for example, on Tuesdays he goes down the street |

I'm not expert but I think the only reason I'd use buys is for hypthotical situations or post tense?
"If he goes out and buys her some chocolate" "He's going out to buy her some chocolate" "He bought her some chocolate" last edited by WetWired at 15:00:59 21/Mar/08 |

Seriously, I'm 3/4 retarded and I wouldn't even use "buys" in a sentence.

Sorry Tol, I've conferred with my Mum who's a teacher and we both agree that because your girlfriend is using the present tense, ie goes she is correct in using buys. It's as if she is telling a story. As Crazy Morton pointed out, if it was in past tense she would have to use bought as bought is the past tense of buy.

This is essentially a question of whether the author is intending to use an active voice or passive voice. Active is "buys" and a conjunction "and" is used to join the phrases. Passive is "to buy". In the passive voice you are using a preposition "to" to join the phrases together.

John buys his girlfriend flowers regularly.
"does buy" works, but buys is certainly more natural to me. Remember spelling and grammar are artifacts (or artefacts if you prefer English spelling) of a living language that will change quicker then a text book. I would have also said to buy is active, "to be bought" passive. (both being the infinitives). But I suck badly at English. |

So, is it poor grammar to use buys or does it not matter?

I wouldn't say "poor" because, technically it's correct. However, the sentence could probably be structured "better". |

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using "buys", nor does it make it a "poorly constructed" sentence.

'Buys' is the present tense of 'buy'. You fail. You also have failed, currently fail and will fail. Count yourself lucky that this girl is dumb enough to let you put your dick in her.
Idiot. |
