From Courier mails Website

A NEW all-day speed limit of 30km/h will be in force around Brisbane schools in time for the start of the school year.

Transport Minister Steve Bredhauer this week approved the lowering of speed limits at 13 schools in the greater Brisbane area, with most Queensland schools to follow by the start of 2003.

The new school speed limit will be in force between 7am and 5pm on weekdays and will replace the 40km/h zones which apply only between 7am and 9am and 2pm to 4pm on school days.

Mr Bredhauer said the 13-school trial would evaluate whether motorists would comply and whether it would affect crash rates.

The lower speed limit was a recommendation of the School Transport Safety Task Force established by the Government this year. But motoring groups and the state Opposition yesterday blasted the change as an unnecessary restriction.

RACQ spokesman Gary Fites said 30km/h school zones would erode any respect motorists had for speed limits, and the need to enforce the new zones would draw police away from areas of higher need.

Mr Fites suggested the new zones might be the Government's way of "falsely" proving to the community it was serious about addressing school transport safety.

He said the typical profile of a child killed travelling to or from school was an eight- to 12-year-old boy hit by a car only one or two blocks from home – not outside school.

The move to lower speed limits around schools was therefore "counterproductive and unnecessary", Mr Fites said.

"The Government here is really just seeking to impose a solution on a problem that doesn't exist," he said.

"Let's address the real problems in school transport safety, and not just be seen to be doing something about it."

Opposition Leader Mike Horan said 30km/h was "close to a crawl" and was not a sensible way to protect children on their way to and from school. He said it made much more sense for the Government to urgently fit seatbelts in all school buses.

However the School Transport Safety Task Force's final report said there was strong evidence that reducing speed limits around schools would result in significantly fewer injuries in crashes.

The report said statistics showed that up to a third of student pedestrians and cyclists killed travelling to or from school had been in the immediate vicinity of their school when struck.

The report noted that in Scandinavia, school speed zones were set at 25km/h, and those countries enjoyed lower child fatality and injury rates than Australia.

It said reducing the speed limit would help focus drivers on the risks to student pedestrians and cyclists.

Standard road engineering practices do not support a drop in speed of more than 20km/h in one hit, as it could increase rather than reduce crash risk.

An interdepartmental working group is still considering another taskforce recommendation to upgrade safety standards on every school bus in the state by 2017, at a cost of $503 million.

The package of bus safety upgrades would include rollover protection, increased seat strength, padding and seatbelts.

Yeah - I'm all for slow speeds around schools... thats the only f***ing place though - this 50k/hour s*** around town is useless homosexuality.. there are already enough dawdling drivers that drive that slow and don't pay any attention to what they are doing.

If 40 or 50 kmph is adequete enough to stop before hitting school kids, then I don't see how lowering it will stop people who drive 60+...

thats really gay.

I remember in year9-10 or something when i was waiting at the bus stop to go to school and this kid was crossing the road (dbl lane freeway) and he got hit by this old lady in a car coz he didn't look or something.
His arm and leg were broken or something and he was screamimg in pain, and the old lady was in shock.
Car crashes are pretty fast and violent

anyways, a tad different from my normal school days.

yers i agree the speed limit shpould be way low round schools..i do the 40 thang atm and my gawd if you hit anything at that speed you are really havin a shocker
on that point it aint gonna stop the ppl doin 60+ well maybe it wont but it means bigger fines plus the chance of getting locked up for doin whatever the excess is, will be brought down another 10 ks

50km/h round local streets during the day is fine by me too..i have a 4 yr old son and although he only plays inside the yard it still doesnt stop someone from mounting the gutter...and if youve taken yer car round a corner sideways before you have also undoubtly hit a few gutters in yer time too

omg will someone plzz think of the children!!..simps.

A relative of mine was walking home from school one day along beside the road...guess he was about 12-13 or so. A fire engine was passing, and had to swerve to avoid a woman in a car. The fire engine mounted the cerb and hit him, killing him instantly. My point is that people should just be careful around schools, full stop. There is more to driving than going below the speed limit.

umm in case none of u drive at 40 then u dont know how slow 30 is... 40 is adequate for school areas and its only between certain times... haha but now u have to do 30 ALL the time through that area even when school is off.. u wanted it so u get it now. the article is right about this being counter productive. now people will only go faster to piss everyone off.
gg government.

id say since the 40 was introduced it has greatly decreased child deaths so why lower it even more.. its not going to stop the situation completely so why bother ? i know it sounds harsh but u have to look at it from a drivers perspective as well.. who really wants to crawl at 30 along a road at night where there are no kids or anyone around? and WHO is going to abide by it ? expecially at night time.

i'm f***ing sick of these f***ing insane speed limits around schools and built-up areas.

if they were in the interest of protecting children from the dangers of cars they would put up f***ing great big fences and bridges so the little lambs can go on their merry way.

30km/h or not, if a kid gets in front of you car while its moving, the kid's gonna get hurt. fullstop.

I reckon it won't do much as far as accident and fatalities etc go... there is f*** all difference between 30 and 40, if you are a s*** enough driver to hit something at 40 you will still hit it at 30.

Ive got an idea. Remove the cars All together Muahahahahah

It's those pesky little kids that come charging across the road stepping out in front of a bus so you dont see them untill they are halfway across the first lane. Going 40 gives me plenty of time to assess and change corse rather easily. going 30k wont change this.
I'd be more likly to go 10k over then.
ITs not the car speeds that nail the kiddies its a combination of road speed/stupid drivers and stupid kids. They addressed the road speed before bringing it to 40k, that was a good move. They addressed the stupid kids by teaching them stuff abuot roads. But they still have stupid drivers. I rekon they should do random re-testing of peoples licenses. It'd get rid of a few morons that currently pilot metal death boxes.

Also I don't think that it is people doing 40 that is causing problems, it is people speeding in school zones that is an issue. All this is going to do is provide oportunity for police to fine people more heavily if they are caught.

It is also my opinion that if they continue to reduce suburban speed limits you are going to end up with more skill less drivers who can't handle a car. You will end up with a situation of drivers who never do more than say 50 on the suburban roads (speed limits will get lower EVERYWHERE) and they go for the big trip somewhere like the coast and can't handle a car for nuts... I'm not saying make everyone a race car driver but having limits too low will make s*** drivers.

HAHA this is a joke. They lower the speed when they haven't even enforced the existing one. It's not the people doing the limit that are gonna injure people, it's the d*******s who do 60, 70kph that aren't driving responsibly and causing accidents.

And if they don't do the limit now, what would make them do a LOWER limit?!?

or when you got past a school get out of your car and push it till it is past the school then get back in and speed away.

yeah this is very retarded, the facts are:

- kids that get hit by cars are most often 9-12 yr old boys, who get hit two streets away from their house, not outside their schools

...if the government was serious about this stuff they would put seat belts in buses, not this insane s***
SacredSperm

The seatbelts in school buses wouldn't work I don't think.

Down here the buses from school are completely packed, every seat full, and no standing room left. Making seatbelts compulsory would mean bus companies would have to buy tonnes of new buses, and upgrade their old ones. Quite a bit of money. And the kids probably wouldn't wear them anyway.

Then again, if the kids don't wear the seatbelts, they almost deserve to be injured.

I still don't get why people don't wear seatbelts all the time in cars. Its not that bloody difficult.

Exactly. The force of a 1 to 2 tonne car is going to hurt like hell no matter what speed you are going.

One of the nig problems with our government is that they tend to do alot of short term fixes. That is fixes that will be noticed by the public because they change something that effects the people that are voting for them.

Governements should focus on the long term fixes. These are the fixes that will be cheaper in the long run, Work as it seeps through the comunnity over time.
Basically they should just brainwash children before they start driving, stuff like that.

They made a tunnel for the rich north side folk. Must be where all the pollo's live :)

Funny how where masses of polloticians congregrate the living conditions of those places seem to excel. And where there are REALLY big masses (A.C.T) there are even differnt laws to help accomidate there lives.

Funny how pollo's can spend a s*** storm of money on nothing, things like $50,000 curtains and Tax paied Government cars that are used by the wife of pollos to go shopping in, corse that fuel is probably government funded too.
And they still think they should get pay rises.

I'd like to see a pollitican stand up and say, Hay where getting paied an awful lot of money, maybe if we all got paied a little less we could use that money elsewhere, like for the people of Australia.

Then all the other pollo's would ust point and laugh adn apss another bill to give them a pay rise...
I just wish people that ran a country did so for the country and dont try and legally steal thousands of dollers worth of fringe benefits.

They should f*** off these stupid things and make licensing about a million times harder.... any f***** can get a license at the moment, and 90% of them have no f***ing idea in the world how to handle a car even remotely competently. Being licensed to drive should me more of luxury and less of a right, becuase you are in control of a deadly weapon ffs... If I can have a car license I should also be able to have a gun license, cos more people die from stupid f***heads in cars than from guns.

it's 40 already which most ppl ignore, 30 is jus stupid, in effect it will slow the entire street its on to 30, which will result in the speed limit reducing by HALF on 3/5 school zones near me.

these ppl dont have a clue

This 30km/h is really going to bone some people in illuta avenue near the ferny hills primary school. There is this cop whos favourite trick is to sit at the top of the hill and aim his speed gun down into the valley right where the speed goes from 50-40 at the bottom of a hill, when it changes to 30 this guy is going to be going through 2 books of tickets a day!

I'm pretty sure there is asome sort of rule about speed cameras and hills. i cant remember but i was told something like u cant have asped camera on top of a hill and get people comming up it cause u tend to speed up to make it over, comming down is a different story i think.. i'm probably wrong but yer.

that is so retarded

scandinavia is covered in ice for most of the year so i dont see how they can use statistics from there for our roads, the conditions are completely different

they also got our 50kmph around built up areas idea from scandinavia as well which i think is just stupid

they should use examples from places where conditions are similar

the 3 litre straight six is made by Nissan, its overhead cam and is much more efficient and produces nearly the same amount of power and torque. Not to mention the fact it is much more reliable, better quality and you can get TONNES of horsepower out of them.

drag at lights, up to 80km it's dead even, once we hit 90 we started to pullaway, once 100 came up it was all over.

i still wonder if that guy had a clue how to drive or if his car is rooted

30km/h around schools aint gonna bug me much. I hate it how some of you have the kneejerk response to criticize the government before you actually think of both sides of the argument.

yeah, i tend to take the speed limit as the speed limit + 10km/h. 'speed limit' being the recommended speed and 10km/h over being the approximate 'get a ticket' limit.

pfft what sorta car do you drive around in 5th in 60km/h zones?

Squarky - thats not all that strange a thing to happen. Average standard VL's are all that quick. My car can just about keep up with them and its only got a 2.3 litre 4 (being a well designed vehicle though, it is geared nearly perfectly and makes the most of its power). Oh and btw the 626 you were in would have had a 2.2 litre 4 not 2.4litre. And you're right, most Holden driving s***kunts have no idea how to drive.
