I'll prolly get flamed for this but I went and saw Lord of the Rings tonight, I thought it was a very ordinary movie, didn't deserve half the hype it got from people etc. First hour and a bit was pretty cool, then it went downhill and there could have been at least 20-30 mins of footage removed cause it was pretty crappy and pointless. I hope the next one is better! |

I didn't really understand what was so good about it... it was just a cliched journey against evil story. Then again I didn't really like Star Wars or Crouching Tiger hidden Dragon and all the other hyped up movies everyone raves on about. |

Ya just wondering rommel - Why was it such a great movie? It didn't have anything really outstanding that most other fantasy movies have... The story is pretty good, but I think the movie was too long, and didn't have enough going on at any one time, it was the same sort of thing all the way through, look we're being attacked, lets defend, etc. On the other hand I loved starwars (even episode 1) and crouching tiger hidden dragon :D |

Ya CaPt0 the effects were OUTSANDING that was very very good, and the plot as a whole is very intact and is a good plot, I just didn't enjoy the movie very much!. I can get into any movie I watch, but I read all the books and I was expecting something a little bit different, maybe a bit more fantasy-like but I don't know It wasn't a BAD movie, but I didn't think it has what it takes to be another Star Wars/Gladiator/Matrix type movie, it didn't have that something special to make it stand above the rest |

I enjoyed it, although I was annoyed at a few things missing that were of great inportance from the books. (i.e Aragons sword) and for anyone that reckons certain scenes could have been skipped, shut up, you obviously havn't read the books. It'll all tie in, in the end. |

I just read your second post, I can't believe u read all the books and yet feel some of the footage was pointless. things that bothered me - lack of Tom Bombadill - Aragons sword NOT being the "sword that was broken and forged again" |

Pointless footage - 80% of the fireworks scene, it was just eye candy, Half the canoeing/rowing scene, the farmer chasing them scene etc it adds up Yeah I have read the books, never said I hated the movie, but just thought it didn't have to go for 3 hours |

some times they add those scenes into to show how much the character means and they friend ship they have. like i saw someone bitch about the sword practiceing. they do that to show that there all a happy bunch. |

i'd have to agree with raraku actully. I was impressed by the movie itself (the settings/action and CG) but the plot and characters didn't really do anything for me and after 3 hours, i was thuroughly bored. Then again, i haven't read the books (although i've been meaning to for years) so maybe thats why... if you want to see some really..and i mean *really* excellent films, go to the centro or dendy adn see either Amalie or The Closet. Both french films, and both easily better than 99.9% of the mainstream s*** in the big cineams. |

I thought it was pretty good. I will definately be going to see the rest. As someone said above it's really a classic 'good versus evil' story, with the only difference being that it's probably the best. |

was aragon the guy what killed the ring master dude? was his sword supposed to repair itself or what? explainIt was Isildur's sword (or was it his fathers?) Anyway It broke when Isildur slew Saron and has been broken ever since. Aragorn's got it for a special reason and I think they called it Isildur's bane or something. \Me grabs LOTR one volume ed. Atually the ring is Isildur's bane but the sword has enough to do with it hmmm they changed the meeting at elronds too wonder why? bleh... who cares. |

ok. u know that "pointless" footage. its not pointless. it all adds up to help create a believeable world. half the reason tolkien is a great writer is because of the complete world he created. it is NOT pointless footage. |

If you noticed in the book, JRR Tolkien was very big on descriptions, read the first 10 - 12 pages of The Hobbit....it takes him that long just to describe Bilbo Baggin's home. Therefore it makes sense that the movie was big on 'eye candy' or whatever you call it...they went to great lengths to show the viewers lots of detail regarding the surroundings and Gandalf's magic, because that's what the book would have done. And I thought the movie was great - I've seen it twice, and I'll admit the second time wasn't as 'great', but what do you expect when you see it again 2 days after? |

Urikai are a cross breeding of Orcs and Goblin Men. Isildurs sword which cut off Suran hand was known throughout the books as "The sword that was broken and forged again" it was forged again for Aragon because it is his birth right, Wielding it is the proof that he is a blood decendant of Isildur and hence he is rightful air to the the thrown of Gondor and the ruler of all the men. At the start of the books gondor has no king, only a "steward" who takes on all the kingly obligations of Gondor until a blood relative of Isildur is found. The sword holds great importance in later novels because (without giving to much away) The people of Rohan once seeing Aragon with sword accept him as the new ruler of Gondor and further on, Aragon raises the army of the dead (who cannot wrest peacefully until there debt to Gondor has been paid - only the king can raise them and hence he needs the sword). |

I was also kinda pissed that they downplayed the rivallry and distrust between Gimli and Legolas, in the books they begin to respect each other as warriors but it takes a long time (until rohan really) for them to start becoming friends and trusting each other. |

Fade2Black (are you really Sam Hamilton - I've already had this discussion ;) - IIRC Aragorn was just using a regular sword in the first book and it's not until the Two Towers that Narsil is reforged as Anduril. Of course it's a long time since I read the books... For a really handy Middle Earth Encyclopedia check out Arda. My thoughts... I really enjoyed the movie. But I must say I liked it more for the story and the characters than for the effects. For the most part the effects and scenery were great and I think it was worth devoting time to the scenery just to give an idea of what Middle Earth was supposed to look like. And the time spent robbing the farmer, at Bilbo's party and in the sword training all served to build a better picture of the characters. I didn't like some of the effects though - a few of them looked blurry (too blurry). It's the same problem the Phantom Menace had - they deliberately use motion blur to add realism but go a little too far and make it look unreal. Also, when Bilbo tries to take the ring back the effect they used looked really stupid - like a cutrate monster movie. There were a few other fx driven scenes that looked kinda dodgy too. But I must say there were some great scenes. I loved the statues on the river and the battle with the cave troll and my personal favourite - Gandalf and the Balrog. I really wondered how they'd manage to capture the sheer power and terror that the Balrog was supposed to inspire and they did a hell of a job. And I particularly likes the way Gandalf and to some extent Saruman were shown as powerful and fit despite looking like old men. That's how it should be :) I'm a little worried about the next two movies though. I need to read the books again, but IIRC they were much more character driven (ie: not as many chases and battles). |

I can't be bothered reading half these posts.. but... I would go as far as saying that it probably did help if you have read the book, to the maount you enjoy the moofie.... It was like a visual representation of the story at hand, and personally i think it was spectacular.... seeing the shire, bree, rivendel all appearing in front of you much like you had always imagined was just brilliant. It just goes to show how the diverse descriptions that Tolkein used to set the scenes and great visual effect in your mind as you read the book could be interpreted so similarly by two individuals. It was this in my opinion that made the book so amazing as you read you could just picture every event and the movie I think did a great job of fulfilling those scenes to the fans WHILST making an enjoyable movie for those out there that are fans of the fantasy genre. basically if you didn't like it u're gay :P |
