lol what is this s***

link

EVERY Australian household should stockpile at least 10 weeks' worth of food rations to prepare for a deadly flu pandemic, a panel of leading nutritionists has warned.

World health experts now agree a pandemic is inevitable and will spread rapidly, wiping out up to 7.4 million people globally and triggering rapid food shortages.

Australia is expected to be among the first countries hit because of its proximity to Asia and high levels of international traffic.

The most important message for the Australian public is to avoid going out in public when the pandemic hits, the research found.

Huh? At some stage in the future there is going to be a flu pandemic caused by some strain of flu virus? Wow, great work Courier Mail.

Sure it will happen and it could have already begun, but it also could be 100 years from now. Typical media sensationalism.

OMG This is what that stupid drunk chick was warning us about at the pub a few weeks back!!!! She said, "IF YOU DON'T VOTE FOR KEVIN RUDD THERE'LL BE A T.B. OUTBREAK AND WE'LL ALL DIE!" Maybe she meant if we don't vote for John Howard?

As much as I hate to give credence to anything published in the bastion of journalistic integrity and enlightenment that is the Courier Mail..

Influenza is a pretty scary virus.. While I'm not saying I agree with the sensationalism and fear-mongering approach used here, it's still worth being prepared for it..

Considering that the greatest pandemic ever wasn't the Black Plague (even including the other 2 strains floating around at the same time), but actually the Spanish Flu, people should at least be aware that it is a serious threat to their health.

If it doesn't happen for another 100 years, then great, but on the offchance that it happens next week, people should know about it.. I just don't think that the Spurious Mail should be the people disseminating the information.

Nah, we need (and are way overdue for) a big plague to keep population control back in check. Unfortunately, as you said, the last big outbreak we had was the spanish flu and before that the potato famine, so worldwide population has as a result increased sixfold since the last outbreak.

Fair enough, but fear mongering by stupid newspapers trying to get a headline is not how it should be done.

people are more aware then they were 100 years ago how to avoid infection when it comes to pandemics. 3rd world countries may have massive deaths but western countries can adapt to the situation due to awareness. sars was a good example, in the end it didn't kill many people at all.

I don't think its a bad idea to have a few week's food in the cupboard; I'd love to know I had ten weeks for my family.

Cyclone Larry was pretty scary in Cairns, the quite short interruption in food supply lines (72 hours?) pretty much totally emptied supermarket shelves. Obviously there was a fair bit of reactive stocking up, but very few families would have had enough food to last more then a week or two even with the stockpiling from the storm hit.

We do live on a pretty thin food supply chain in western countries with a lot of just-in-time delivery to supply major population areas.

I remember reading an article somewhere that babbled that on average Australians are 4 days away from starving. So if food supply completely stopped it would take about 4 days for supermarkets to run dry and people to start having no food. I think it could go a week.

Sif starvation,

I reckon I could live for 4 days comfortably on a 500g bag of rice.

A chair is a piece of furniture for sitting, consisting of a seat, a back, and sometimes arm rests, commonly for use by one person. Chairs also often have four legs to support the seat raised above the floor. Without back and arm rests it is called a stool. A chair for more than one person is a couch, sofa, settee, loveseat, recliner or bench. A separate footrest for a chair is known as an ottoman, hassock or pouffe. A chair mounted in a vehicle or in a theater is simply called a seat. Chairs as furniture typically can be moved.

The back often does not extend all the way to the seat to allow for ventilation. Likewise, the back and sometimes the seat are made of porous materials or have holes drilled in them for decoration and ventilation.

The back may extend above the height of the head. There may be separate headrests. Headrests for seats in vehicles are important for preventing whiplash injuries to the neck when the vehicle is involved in a rear-end collision.

I have seen how fast gastroenteritis goes through my nursing home. It just makes you crap your pants but it manages to take the whole service down for a week. A bug with any virility and that same level of contageousness will wreak awesome havoc.

If you think this sort of armageddon is impossible, think back to the bubonic plague.

We are not so superior and perfect. Just imagine if AIDS mutated to transmit via respiratory infection....

There are many, many mutations that would be needed for that to even possibly work. Those same mutations may also make it less deadly.

Because governments and religion won't tackle the population problem it looks like it's up to a horrific pandemic to dramatically reduce the poplutation.

It's sickening that humanity is so stupid.

So you're saying that because a plague which cannot be answered by conventional medicines happened once, it can't happen again.
