SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Extreme gaming just got a whole lot better. NVIDIA(R) Corporation has extended its SLI(TM) technology, which enables the use of multiple graphics processing units (GPUs) on a single computer, allowing up to three GeForce(R) graphics cards to be used in a single machine. Now hot, new, graphics-intensive titles, such as Call of Duty 4, Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and Unreal Tournament 3, can be played at the highest resolution possible, with all the graphics settings cranked to the max, and antialiasing applied for the first time.

maybe the time of cheaper cards x 3 is coming for better performance then 1-2 big cards

I don't know what pos computers everyone else is running but my single gpu runs cod4 just fine on 1280x1024 with everything turned on except for AA because I've never used it, don't really see much of a difference. Crysis on the other hand, I doubt even a tripple SLI system would run that game.

Usually one top of the range card runs everything smooth as high settings

Not at a decent resolution.

People who would be interested by this would have LCD's in the 24" to 30" range, running resolutions up to 2560x1600 where they can finally have some decent aa and af.

You'll find that tri sli is limited to only the big cards (8800GTX or the Ultra) because the other cards don't have enough connectors on it.

What's more worrisome than the power requirements is the actual heat dump caused by those cards. Chances are either your cards or boards are going to end up frying without sufficient cooling.

soon our PC's will take up as much power as a fridge which is pretty damn stupid imho. Hell I've seen like 1100watt PSU's for computers, that's almost half the maximum current draw allocated for one circuit in a normal house, if you had your computer on the same circuit as the tv, stereo and your routers and printers, some s*** is going to blow eventually.

we're gonna need a bigger boat.

Funny they don't mention Crysis on that list when Crysis is in fact the only game I've seen that absolutely will not run well at max settings on a 24" LCD using the fastest available CPU and dual 8800 Ultras (max settings meaning 4x AA and max everything else).

Maybe on a 30" LCD triple cards might make some sense for a wide range of games, but on a 24" it's pretty much Crysis only, or some as-of-yet-unreleased next-gen game.

1.1kW / (root 3 * 240) = 2.65 A

A standard GPO circuit is 10 A mate - that's ~4.1kW. The only thing you'd blow would be the overcurrent fuse for the circuit (in an older house) or an MCB if it's a newer place...

The thing about psu's is that they won't be going flat out at 100%, if you have one going flat out chances are it's going to die sooner rather than later. The most you really want to use is 80% power, which usually is where the PSU is most efficient too.

There are PSU's that are capable of 1600W already out on the market and with technology like TRI-SLI, it's only going to continue to increase.

That is just stupid though ive pretty much given up PC gaming cept for 1 or 2 specific games. Im sure there are people out there foaming at the mouth however, at the mear thought of getting another 25 fps out of UT3 or something.

I don't know about you - can you imagine the heat that 3x 8800's would put out?
The middle card would bake, let alone the motherboard at that point

I've seen enough systems baking with just two 8800's
