Topic: Blizzard Confirms New MMO Project

In the wake if their massive industry-shaking merger with Activision, Blizzard have finally confirmed they are looking to launch an all-new MMO. This affirmation of what fans have been wanting to hear for years came from the World of Warcraft forums where these jobs were explained as being for a new non-WoW related MMO. As Blizzard last announced StarCraft II (to much fan elation), it's highly unlikely the game will be based in the SC universe. Moreover, the job descriptions use the term "next-gen", something usually more acquainted with consoles than PCs, leaving the always trusty interwebz rife with rumour - will we finally see good a MMO on the Xbox 360 or PS3? We'll keep you up to date as more information is revealed.

Those next-gen mmo job ads have been up for months haven't they? Why is everyone counting this as newsworthy?

I don't want to sound rude .... but most of that is not news.
6 months ago people found out its code name (I think its called Hydra).

And the post you are referencing is 11 days old.

What is "news" is a vague reference to it not being like anything they have made before (rules out World of Starcraft, World of Diablo and a WoW expansion)

I'm not sure why Blizz are doing this.. they already have one successful MMO so why try for another? Surely they'd just grab WoW, change all the pretty pictures and release it as something else.

I really hope it's not gonna be on a console.

Heh, Blizzard is totally know for their originality. By not being like anything they've made before, it'll be set in the Diablo universe with an mmo game tacked on.

Actually if anything it makes World of StarCraft more likely IMO. Releasing StarCraft II will give the playerverse a primer with the game lore etc much like War III did in advance of WoW.

Blizzard are unlikely to start a new franchise at the moment with the cash cow that their current three represents. Sci-Fi is rather lacking for MMOs, another fantasy MMO (el Diablo) would compete too directly with WoW.

yeh, I would have thought a SC MMO would be a pretty logical next step. Clearly Blizzard still don't have enough money.

Hogfather, that's exactly my line of thinking. I'll be hugely surprised if Blizzard announce their next MMO and it's not StarCraft.

Sorry, but Warcraft 3 came out about 10 years before WoW.

wow was actually built of the ideas on expanding the engine from wc3

anyway i vote they do a pirate mmo or a battle mech mmo or a space (yawn less boring then eve) mmo

else they could spend all that money coming up with *gasp* something completly different

I would think they have been waiting for people to start leaving WoW due to being over it, maybe trying other MMO's. There would be little point in releasing a new MMO that steals customers from your other MMO.
You would want to entice the non-believers back.
I hope it is some sort of Galaxy based game with space combat and planet side exploration :D

Aside from 100 dollars a box * 7 (?) million subscribers?

700 million dollars is a pretty f***ing pointy point ;)
