Stole this from www.imdb.com because it's better than what I could have written.
In 1982, LIFE Magazine assembled the worlds greatest gamers for a photo shoot that would become the center spread of their 1982 Year-In-Photos edition. Billy Mitchell, who would later be named the Gamer of the Century, was one of the invitees.

Mitchell, the World Record holder on Centipede, had been tracking the score on Donkey Kong, and knew he could take that title as well. In front of the 20 best gamers in the world, Billy scored 874,300 points, a record many thought would never be broken.

In 2003, 35 year old family man Steve Wiebe, after losing his job at Boeing, found solace in Donkey Kong. Steve stumbled upon Billy Mitchells record online, and set out to break it. He began perfecting his game every night after his wife and kids went to bed, and not only surpassed Billys record, but ended up with a thought-to-be-impossible 1,000,000 points.

A tidal wave of media coverage followed, and Steve Wiebe quickly became a celebrity in his hometown of Seattle, WA. He also rediscovered his love for teaching, and regained the respect of all who once doubted him. Meanwhile, back in Hollywood, FL, Billy Mitchell hatched a plan to reclaim his fallen Donkey Kong record.

Watched this today and f*** me it was good. Prolly go as far to say it's one of the best things I've watched in quite a while and the ending had me sitting there smiling after all that had happened.

Two thumbs up!

This movie is worth watching :)

Very entertaining, laugh at how seriously these guys take themselves and their sport. Also the fact that it's only americans competing but they are trying to determine who the greatest gamers in the world are :)

That was soo f***ing awesome.

For a movie about Donkey Kong, that was intense :)

LOL at Brian Kuh though! He tries so hard and idolizes Billy Mitchell but just can't live up to him... I nearly LOLed when he was going around Funspot, "Killscreen about to come up on Donkey Kong!".

hahaha it was great, watched it sunday night after the suggestion here. Brian Kuh was hilarious you couldn't create a character like that from your imagination.

+1 for top viewing.

This story has it all: scandal, a champion, an underdog, a journey fraught with obstacles, a twist, heroes, villians, the lot!

Who would have thought Donkey Kong had so much narrative potential?

A really well paced film about an obscure yet fascinating aspect of modern culture.

My thumbs are way up.

If you play video games of any description it really is worth a look.
Great find Rev.

I really enjoyed this, but by the end of it I felt like smacking the f*** out of that stuck up cockspoon that held the pacman record. This guy seriously though he was god and nothing could get in his way.

Great doco. The ending is out-of-date though, Billy has since regained the high score on Donkey Kong. Ah well.

Just got a chance to watch this - absolutely brilliant. And yeah, Billy is a complete Ass-hat. Seems like everyone worships him/lives in fear of him, so let him get away with far more s***.

The biggest LOL for me in the movie was when Steve was travelling to Florida for the tournament and his daughter was asking him things about the Guinness Book of Records. At the end just comes out with the line 'seems like people kinda waste their lives trying to get into that book'. Sad the most sensible person in the whole film is a young child.

Well this year Billy came out and PWNED Steve's record, beat the 1 million score Steve set and then deliberately killed himself multiple stages before the killscreen, proving that he indeed champion of Donkey Kong :)

He went to extraordinary lengths to make it authentic, bought an original DK board off Ebay, sent it away to Nintendo and an original maker of DK verified it... did the record over direct feed to a Twin Galaxy... opened the original Nintendo package in front of the camera and a security guard/local gaming referee and proceeded to pwn.

I got 27,000 today :( This game is so f***ing hard it's not funny.

On another note, Joust is the most f***ing awesome game ever :)

For real, I bone my mame box and $260 ozstick controller everyday (not classic though, usually MK2 and TMNT, so it's a change of pace) :)

Once I get some decent $$ I'll build a cabinet.

Joust is my life atm though, I'm addicted... so simple yet so insanely complex and unforgiving :)

DK, once I get to the 3rd barrel stage I'm happy because you can control the barrels (1st barrel stage is gay, 2nd is semi-gay) and group/hammer for large points... 4-4 (3rd elevator stage) is absolutely BUSTING my nuts atm... spent probably 5 - 6 hours today trying to pass it but the spring pattern is f***off brutal.

Spoiler:
I just looked up the twin galaxy's site and billy is the champion again :( ...with a perfect 100% score so he'll always be #1 now cos he got it first

I just saw this on Twin Galaxies forum. Hollywood want to turn it into a movie. I reckon it would be a good laugh and what would be even better is to see who they would cast for Billy Mitchell.

Le Cock, there's no such thing as a perfect score? if old mate does it in less time with the same amount of lives etc, won't he get more points?

Checkout the twin galaxies site. There's a heap of guys with 100% pacman scores but billy mitchel got it first so he's #1. He's done kong with 100% score now too, steve is 99.9%. doesn't look like they take time into consideration.

There's no such thing as a "100%" score on Donkey Kong... the game is randomly generated and therefore the same board on different games can generate a significantly different amount of points.

Take for example a simple barrel stage... grab the bottom hammer,

1. The barrels aren't travelling down ladders much, say you hit 6 barrels
or
2. The barrels are being extremely aggresive and moving down ladders, you hit 10 barrels

Sometimes barrels group up and you get bonus for jumping 2+ barrels... sometimes extra fireballs come out (and they may either chase you and you can hammer them, or they don't and you miss out on points).

Very random game.

BTW, my high score atm is 137,000 :) I'm getting pretty decent at it.

couldnt u just stay on level 1 and keep hammering barrels for unlimited score?

Na, there's only 2 hammers per barrel stage that only last a few seconds... also there's a bonus timer (starts at 5k, increases as you progress, counts down 100 points at a time... kills you when it reaches zero... this is where the "kill screen" glitch comes in, the bonus timer malfuctions).
