DivX (the company) have announced that the PlayStation 3 will soon have the ability to play DivX (the digital video format):
DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date. PS3 game title developers will be able to utilize DivX's decoder technology by updating the system software of PS3's Software Development Kit to version 2.00, which was released by SCE on November 2nd.

transcoding sucks. there is a noticable loss of quality.

hopefully this move will make MS release divx/xvid support for the 360 and tversity can disappear.

hope it'll do upscaling of divx's like it does with DVD's.

btw, does anyone know anywhere in Aus that still sells 60Gb PS3's? (besides ebay).

The default settings in tversity make it scale videos down to like 300x240 or something equally tiny, I just bumped that value right up and now it doesn't downscale any of the movies I transcode through it, looks sweet as.

Would it likely be supported in Xbox360 in the future?

It sounds kinda likely. Here's a snippet from Gizmodo:
DivX's brand new CEO, Kevin Hell, accidentally leaked some juicy info about their Xbox 360 plans when questioned at a JP Morgan conference. An analyst questioned Hell about the new media center extenders that have DivX and Xvid compatibility and whether the same functionality was coming to Xbox. Kevin replied, "Yes! that, uh, we're in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can't go into any great detail on that. Um, that is not a certified, that is not a certified or licensed product at this time."

just use mediacoder to transcode your divx files to uber quality wmv and put them on a USB flash drive, plug that into the back port on the 360 and you're laughing (works for me anyway).

I dunno about this divx on consoles thing.

I have trouble making divx movies play properly on my COMPUTER. Every now and again one comes along i need an extra codec for.

On your PS3 there isn't the option of downloading VLC to fix your problem, and on the xbox - what- it would be the equivelant of wmp

Thanks. I was lucky enough to find one at my local JB the other night, someone canceled their lay-by about 30mins before I came in. These things are selling for absolutely insane amounts on ebay at the moment because they're so damn hard to come by, I was watching an auction the other day for a brand new PAL 60Gb PS3 and it ended up selling for $1600.

Basically the 40Gb ones are missing 2 USB ports (who cares) and they also removed backward compatibility, i think thats it. Basically I was after backwards compatibility, i'd say that'd be the case with ppl paying these stupid amounts on ebay. That console that went for $1600 was brand new, the used ones though I haven't actually watched one through to the end, I've seen sitting around the $1200-$1300 area but of course could have shot up in the last 30secs of the auction.

Then you're not playing certified divx files. That's what the ps3 is getting, the ability to play files when created a certain way so obviously all these illegal movies created using a camera in a theater are going to be iffy. However if you get a properly made file from say a game dev demoing their latest game that is a certified divx file it's pretty much (mean to be) guaranteed to play in any hardware player.

Now, if you need to get extra codecs to play "divx" files then it obviously isn't a divx file because divx _IS_ the codec, unless perhaps it's the audio codec you lack. Either way use mpc + ffdshow or media player classic.

I'll be getting a ps3 in march and the lack of backwards compatibility doesn't bother me at all. My old door stop turned into a ps2 for gran turismo 3 and 4.

If you were getting it in March because MGS4 was coming out in March, then you might want to wait until June. PAL version has been furthur delayed till then :(

Well install the K-Lite Codec Pack. I haven't seen my computer complain about a missing codec since I first installed that, years ago.

Xbox1 + Mod + XBMC (and + XBMCMythTvFrontend if you have a Myth box) is awesome.

Clearly you don't actually USE your computer.

I would say Divx is type of codec - but it is not one specific codec.

Even with professional formats like MiniDV, there's a standard "dv codec" that can be read by any equipment - but if you're recording using Sony or Panasonic equipment you'll never be able to play it back using the standard codec - you need a version that has been released, possible by THAT company, which takes into consideration whatever 'improvements' that company made to the format.

That's what the ps3 is getting, the ability to play files when created a certain way so obviously all these illegal movies created using a camera in a theater are going to be iffy.

So what exactly will you watch? DVD rips you spend 3 hours making yourself?

However if you get a properly made file from say a game dev demoing their latest game that is a certified divx file it's pretty much (mean to be) guaranteed to play in any hardware player.

Ooh the sheer excitement - a non playable game demo! Yes please let's get the torrent for that one!!

Now, if you need to get extra codecs to play "divx" files then it obviously isn't a divx file because divx _IS_ the codec, unless perhaps it's the audio codec you lack. Either way use mpc + ffdshow or media player classic.

Unless this unless that - long story short you're gonna have problems if you want to spend your saturday night watching anything more exciting than a videocast of a computer game.

Clearly you don't actually USE your computer.

Clearly you just fail at watching videos. Not even my parents have problems watching random DivX/Xvid/whatever files off the internet. K-Lite Codec Pack solves these problems, and if it doesn't you and/or your computer are just retarded.

You don't know what you're talking about.

This technology is going to have the same problem as Stereos that can play "mp3 cds".

What they actually mean is that it will play 1 particular mp3 codec, which you will need to convert all your s*** to. Except with videos it's far more of a pain in the arse to transcode things.

I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about. I was responding to your comment about having problems playing back DivX files on your PC, which is a very simple problem to solve, I never said anything about the DivX codec for consoles.
