Can anyone recommend me a digital camera? I'm looking to pick one up for my sister while I'm over in Hong Kong. Nothing too expensive, must have rechargable battery pack though! Ideas?

Canon Ixus series. Assuming your sister would like a compact camera, there is nothing better. They out perform most cameras anyway, compact or not.

Canon Digital IXUS 70 $270
Canon Digital IXUS 75 $305
Canon Digital IXUS 860is $455
Canon Digital IXUS 900ti $530

I can vouch for Ixus as well, alot of people here at work have one as their point and shoot camera as do I, and they're really good.

IXUS 860 is the best of that list imo. I was going to buy it for underwater photography (as a newb) but the housing wasnt out yet.

But Sony T's (currently have the T7) are great except the propriety s***, is dogz ballz...

Otherwise I really like the all weather Olympus (new u790), they have previous models. Basically if like sports and/or getting pissed with the camera, cant go too far wrong.

Personally I would rather batteries that you dont need to charge cos anywhere in the world you can buy batteries, but they dont necessarily have electricity! but if you dont travel.. who cares!

I was really thinking about getting http://www.dpreview.com/news/0708/07082101sonyt200t70.asp (Sony DSC T200 series) but think might go ixus cause theyre cheaper

oh by the way, the sony dsc t100 and t200 have 5x optical zoom while everything else only has 3 - 3.7 , something to think about too

I used to have a Ixus v1 back when they were about $1200 but several years later i misplaced it and after much looking around got a Panasonic DMC-FX01 which i love after HeardY recommended them. It does 16:9 and I find is much nicer than the canon. Canon's software is annoying and the panasonic is much nicer to use. I'm very happy with it and will certainly consider the panasonics again when i next need to upgrade.

i had the panasonic fx01 which recommended as well in one of those threads but it got misplaced so need a replacement, found the panasonic too grainy on darkshots so would like something better

Trust me, canon's are a much better camera than a sony. They are easier to use, memory cards cost way less and they generally take better shots.

One of the Ixi had 4x zoom iirc.

Get her one of these. She'll love you.

p.s. not serious, that camera costs more than my car :(

vote #1 ixus. Our entire family uses them. I've taken mine overseas twice and been really, really happy with the results. As always, www.dpreview.com is a good site but if you're after something relatively cheap, reliable, and easy to use you can't go past Ixii.

too big to be handy.

to add to that, i don't see myself getting a blueray/HD DVD reader, let alone a burner, until the format war is over. so i would be dropping down anything i record to 540i for DVD anyway.

sorry to revive this thread but I'm stuck between choosing the Ixus 70 and the Ixus 860is, anyone got either one and able to tell how its low light picture taking is? reviews seem to be conflicting.

There is a nearly $200 diference between the two as well.

Differences I can observe between the specs of those two cameras...

a) 860 is 8mp, 70 is 7mp
b) 860 has IS. This will improve low light photography.
c) 860 has a wider lens (28-105 v 35-105). Basically, you can zoom out more and take a wider angled shot.
d) 70 has slightly faster lens on the Tele side - basically, when totally zoomed in, its lens can let more light in than the 860 (very slight difference f4.9 v f5.8)
e) Min shutter is 1/1500 sec on ixus 70 and 1/1600 sec on 860
f) Flash range is 3.5m on ixus 70 and 4m on 860
g) 70 has an optical viewfinder, 860 has no viewfinder, just the lcd.
h) 70 has a 2.5" 230,000px screen, 860 has 3" 230,000px screen.

Thats basically it.

I also like the look of those olympus waterproof ones, though specifically the:

Olympus MJU 795 Digital Camera

$569 on the CA website, but f*** off if I am paying that

Anyone know where I can get one cheaper ?

10 Metres would be sweet, though wondering if anyone has any experience with the general usability of them ? Girlfriend has an Ixus, is it going to be frustratingly s***ter ??

My previous experiences with Olympus were that they have annoying software, with strange ways of doing things... While I can't find specs for that specific model, the 790 (as compared to say, the ixus 70)

1. Has a slower (F3.5 - F5.0 vs F2.8 - F4.9) and narrower lens (38-114 vs 35-105).
2. Uses a more expensive memory card (xD v SD/SDHC)
3. Is way more expensive. ($569 - 795 v $269 - Ixus70 @ Umart)

Also note, that you can get WP-DC13 for the Ixus70 and that makes it waterproof to 40m. (Note: it is ~ $250)

Look how hardcore it is though...

choosing the Ixus 70 and the Ixus 860is,
I dont know about those two models specifically, but I have an Ixus 60 and my sister as a 700-series IS - from her photos the IS appears heaps better, I assume because of the IS part - low-light photos seem better

Yeah mongie but its the simplicity of it that appeals. Lens characteristics are obviously because the Olympus needs to be completely internal

I actually have an old ixus with that case, but its just too bulky

thanks monige :) I guess the 860 is what I'd like as wide angle picture taking is nice but it does not do 16:9 movies like my panasonic lumix used to, I guess ixus 70 it is as its priced nicely

I think the main difference is the LCD size and quality on the back. 75 it is.

I have an Ixus 70. Picked it up in new york after i broke my other P&S camera.

its a good small camera for general photos but i do prefer my slr though. But its worth it. Check getting it from somewhere like B&H with the current $$$ could be pretty good value :D i picked mine up in new york from a store (not b&h though some other random small store) for around $200USD back in september and the prices have come down further since then.

The camera I ended up getting was a Ricoh Caplio R7
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Ricoh/ricoh_caplior7.asp

some quick noob sample photo's I made, liking the camera so far, seems to be a lot better than my old panasonic fx01 that 'disapeared'

To be honest I'm still thinking maybe should have gotten the ixus 860is as these ricoh's seem to have noise issues, then again cant expect a lot out of ultra compacts so the 7x zoom and small size is what really sold me
