Im in the market for a new dvd player as the title says. However i need it to be all regions. Is it possible to buy such a player from a store anywhere on the gold coast or from an australia online store? im searches are coming up blank right now

EDIT - on 2nd thought, it doesnt really HAVE to be all regions. as long as it can play US region dvds ill be happy.

Just at WOW, there's always a couple of cheap brands (Conia and Centrex come to mind).

Besides one friend that shelled out $$ for his home theatre setup, 95% of the people I know have <$50 DVD players.

If you're not an uber AV geek I don't see the point in paying top dollar, they work fine.

Though my TV's just a 51cm standard jobby, no LCD's/plasma here.

I've never noticed a difference from the cheap DVD players to the expensive ones, as far as quality goes. Only thing I've found different is that the cheaper ones have much shorter life-spans (in my case, at least). But then, if it's only costing you $37, and it lasts for a year or more, that's money well spent imo.

what about the environmental cost?

not just the device but the packaging and shipping too.

i got a a pretty cool phillips one hdmi, xvid etc for $80 at harvey norman

ALDI have one for $35 a few months ago brought 2 as they played Divx and have a USB port for memory stick. Check around they might have em still.

Yeah I can't think of any technical reason the picture from one dvd player would look better or worse than another. Assuming they were playing the same region/format to the same cables/display. With digital video decoding; it either works or it doesn't. There's isn't a varying level of quality.

and make sure it plays divx too.

Mine is a gigatech i bought about a year and a half ago from the Disc Shop for about $45. Plays friggin everything.

Well no, there's the quality of the MPEG2 decoder chip, some provide a better picture than others. Some obviously optimise the picture better than others (as with software DVD players..)

Having said that, some of the cheapies have the better decoder chips anyway, but you can guarantee the Conia wouldn't. Still, for $37 you can't complain.
