What? Beta... Demo? Maybe they're just saying what we were all thinking anyway. Yep, Epic have released a playable sampler for Unreal Tournament 3, the next addition to their much loved first person shooter action bonanza, sure to give your PC a nice work out. Here's the skinny:
The beta demo consists of three different action-packed Deathmatch and Vehicle Capture the Flag maps: HeatRay, ShangriLa and Suspense. All maps in the demo can be played locally against bots, or online against human opponents. Unreal Tournament 3 is currently slated to ship in November for PC. Get ready to get your frag on!

HeatRay (Deathmatch): This battle takes place in a night-time urban setting. Players battle over who gets to use a Dark Walker super weapon after it is spawned by a passing drop-ship. If you manage to get it, be sure to rack up the kills quickly since everyone will be gunning for you. The Dark Walker is like a giant piñata -- when it dies it drops a U-Damage and a Berzerk power-up. If you want to stay hidden from the Dark Walker keep an eye out for the Invisibility power-up.

ShangriLa (Deathmatch):A stark contrast to HeatRay's moody setting, ShangriLa is a sunny, tranquil map set high in the Izanagi Mountains. This map is designed in the traditional style of big Team Deathmatch maps, so it should please the most hardcore UT Deathmatch players. Fight over the U-damage in the central courtyard, or try to control the Shield-belt alley. You can find jumpboots in a vulnerable spot at the end of a dock, but the risk is worth the reward as they will go a long way toward helping you control the map.

Suspense (Vehicle Capture the Flag):Set on a massive suspension bridge deep in Axon territory, this map is a playground of gameplay possibilities. It's a favorite in Epic office playtests because you can find almost all the Axon vehicles, as well as the Redeemer super-weapon. Whether you are sniping from the bridge towers, camping with the tank, towing hover-boarding flag-runners from your Raptor, controlling the redeemer from underneath the bridge, bombarding from afar with Hellfire SPMA artillery, or doing fast attacks with Manta's and Scorpions, everyone will find something they love doing in Suspense.
The download is a reasonable 750MB. Download it now, right here from AusGamers files. And woah, that's honestly a complete coincidence that it's the 31337'th file entry in our files db.

Just installed and damn it took f***ing ages.

Anyway, this game is f***ing awesome fun. The visuals are very f***ing nice and the gameplay rocks extremely hard. Runs perfectly on my machine with all detail turned up. Athlon 6000+, 4gig RAM, 8800GTS and 1680x1050 screen rez.

No, because the information in the original post was useless as a news post.

Huge disappointment. There's nothing new here...you could play UT and it would feel exactly the same. Apparently no one told them deathmatch got boring 5 years ago :)

The demo doesn't contain the Warfare mode, which is the big shiny new thing for UT3.

I've installed it on a 2yr old comp with a new vid card and it runs suprisingly well. 1920x1200 max everything (except post processing as 'intense' is ass)

there's a setting somewhere about screen space or area (can't remember what it's called)... seems to be 50% by default. just bump that & world detail up

Does it contain any weird spyware/copy protection that's going to toast my CD drives like a few other demos I won't mention?

You might want to check it didn't default itself back to 800x600. When I started it up I set the res to 1920x1200 in the video options and applied it, but then when I went into a game I was amazed at how s*** everything looked. Went back into the video options while I was ingame and it had set itself back to 800x600. When I changed it back 1920x1200 though and applied it again it worked and looked quite nice.

This is from the EULA in the demo, am I reading this right?
1. License. The software accompanying this License (hereinafter “Software”), regardless of the media on which it is distributed, are licensed to you by Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (“AMD”) for use solely in conjunction with AMD hardware products purchased with the Software (“AMD Hardware”). You own the medium on which the Software is recorded, but AMD and AMD's Licensors (referred to collectively as “AMD”) retain title to the Software and related documentation. You may:
a) use the Software solely in conjunction with the AMD Hardware on a single computer;

Does this mean it's illegal to run the demo on an intel computer? laffo.

I'd say the EULA is identical for the final version of the game, and ATi (now owned by AMD) are bundling the game with a video card.
