We have a massive telescope, but I've got no idea how to plug a camera in. I'll play with it but no guarantees.
My uncle is into astronomy, maybe he might gets some pictures... |

Just went outside then, it's disappearing fast.
(good thing about Wynnum streets are essentially no street lights, means lots of people get bashed though). |

it's gonna be spoiled a bit by the clouds.. but i saw the last full lunar eclipse n i doubt it's changed much ;p street lighting is kind of irrelevant for this sort of viewing. the moon is pretty damn bright.
i won't be dragging my telescope out for it... coz you can see the moon fine with your unaided eyes. looking thru my telescope, using the minimum magnification eyepiece, the moon fully occupies the view for about 10seconds so alls ya see is craters. to view a total eclipse that's kinda pointless. |

This is the best image I got, there was still a fraction of movement as you can see with the star! I took about 10 shots and got this one decent one :)

wow thats f***en cool. just watched it for about 15 mins. some awsome photo opportunities but without a tripod they wouldnt turn out too good. it looks cool through binoculars though.
edit: nice photo. i couldnt see that star on the right with the naked eye but i could when i used the binoculars. last edited by ravn0s at 20:09:21 28/Aug/07 |

what blew me away, looking through the binoculars is that without the moons reflection, you had this imedeite gain in depth perception of the moon. just the mere sight of this huge 3d ball just floating their suspended in space was mind blowing. totally wicked awesome, also Cjay thx for the pic mate.

What kind of camera did you use to take that, cJay?
I tried to get some, but I a) need a longer lens and b) couldn't hold still long enough to not blur the shots (tripod died :() |

What kind of camera did you use to take that, cJay? A panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7, I was using a tripod with zoom to the max x12 (32mm). |

I got lots of photos and made a time lapse of it. Youtube doesn't do it justice tho:
Shot with a Canon 30D and 70-200mm f/4L on a tripod about 5-10 seconds apart for around an hour all up (shot on timer via computer - I don't have that much patience :P) |

it's actually not very big - under 1MB all up. I might make a higher-res version up, but for now here's the 640x480 version (.mov)

Can someone please explain to me the difference between the earth blocking the sun to cause a lunar eclipse and the difference between the earth blocking the sun to cause a new moon/crescent moon etc? :/

Is it that a crescent moon isn't the Earth blocking the sun? It's that we only see the bit of the moon exposed to the sun at that point and the rest of it is the 'dark side of the moon' with no sunlight reflecting off it to us. That's what I thought anyway.

Yeah the earth doesn't block the sun normally, it's just the sun is off at an angle and not getting light all over the moon.

You best read this.
edit: also, note that when the moon is behind the earth, it does not mean that it is in its shadow. The moon's orbit is on a tilt http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/astronomy/moon/orbit.jpg last edited by Lynx at 13:02:37 29/Aug/07 |

Check out Celestia if you're interested in Astronomy. It's like a Google Earth, except for space (its free and open source).
I just tried to make a movie which shows the moon rotating the earth with the sun in frame but it eluded me, I don't have the skillz. I'll keep trying though, but in the meantime just download it, it's fun to tinker with! |
