Due to wireless networking sucking balls and no possibility of installing or runig data cables through the house I have been looking into ethernet over power. All my googling seems to spit up very positive reviews. Has anybody here had any hands on experience with ethernet over power devices? I'm just curious as to what kind of speeds can be experienced, the stability of the connection and how good it would be for gaming. I need a good dose of BF2!

So what would be better, getting ethernet over power to connect to the modem/router downstairs, or buying a really kick ass wireless router/modem?

I haven't myself but term and saint both bought some of the doohickeys for it and reckon it's been great

It's much much better than wireless, I wish I hadn't wasted money with wireless now. Transfer rates aren't great, but I found them to be better than wireless. I get around 2mb/sec here in an apartment, and was getting about 1.2mb/sec in term's house. You just have to make sure you're on the same circuit and it's fine.

What models do you have saint? Iv been looking at this as well , my only concern is streaming media to my xbox

If you had UPSs or laptops there shouldn't be a reason why it wouldn't work.

I have the netgear ones in a 2 story house and have no problems streaming movies/tv shows from my pc up stairs to a pc downn stairs

Same deal for me, want to put them in a 2 story townhouse and the wireless is just really flaky in my area. I think it could be interferance from the neighours, like a cordless phone or a microwave from time to time.

I got the Netcomm ones (85mb/s), they seem fine and are a bit smaller than the netgear ones. As for encryption, they do have encryption built in and you can change the settings if you wanted to (on both the Netgear and Netcomm).

They're fine if you like sharing your network traffic with your energy company, not to mention your neighbours ... with no encryption!

I'd never really heard of this before, but after looking into it, it looks pretty cool. Still not as quite as convenient as wireless in some instances (like if you have a laptop that you use in a lot of different locations), but I assume it's probably a lot more reliable than wireless.

I've also read mixed things about the speeds. Do you notice much difference with this compared to a normal wired Ethernet connection?

Wireless is gay. I have a wireless keyboard, and a cordless telephone and they all seemed to interrupt signals to saints computer. The router is out near mine. The poor c*** used to drop out of important wow battles and make us lose. He is a loser. Ethernet over power is the real winner here.

Normal wired ethernet is far superior, you only notice the difference when copying stuff. Normal wired ethernet I get about 10mb/sec, network over power I get about 2mb/sec.

How's wow run ?

i had lots of wifi issues at my new pad. got 2 netgears 85mb, works great.

What about these 200Mbps doodads? Anybody used those able to comment on their speed?

What about streaming video across them? Thats my only concern is streaming an xvid to my xbox over them, works fine through the wireless bridge but since moving it cant buffer enough and just drops out now.

Streaming is fine, I just watch all the movies from saint's computer on mine and project it onto my TV and its flawless. I'm assuming thats what you mean by streaming?

SO they have to be on the same circuit within the house huh? That could be a problem since there's like 12 different RCD's in our switch box : /

Thanks for the input guys, I'll have to have some trial and error funsies to figure out if my room and the room with the router are on the same line.

I just worked out that my router and xbox are on 1 circuit and my PCs are on another circuit :(:( So I guess im stuck with wireless.

I use a d-link 108mbit wireless router and a basic wireless card, but both with 5dbi antennas and they work fine.

Throughput isn't the best, but its fine for the internets and stable.

Problem is that my microwave nerfs the signal, and I live in a townhouse which is connected to other townhouses, if they have some crappy uniden cordless phone or they switch on their microwave the signal gets shot to hell. I think there is too much crap floating around the airwaves for my wireless to work well

you can't like, run a longer network cable from a plug "near" your pc, to your pc? (to use EoP i mean)

The way my place is layed out it would be kind of awkward. I have read a lot of ppl saying that across circuits isnt a problem as long as your on the same phase of power, which for most places isnt a problem. Im going to run a big ass cat 5 tonight and make sure that doing this will fix the problem, if it does Ill invest in a set of EOP devices and if they dont work, chuck them on ebay :)
