I have got the Toshiba HD dvd player. I got it from Indro Harvey, I just bought 300 the movie. All the background picture looks really grainy? It also looks like that on the demo dvd i got with the player? I have got the hdmi cable and a panasonic plasma. Is this normal?

Here's what it should look like on HD DVD at 1080p:

It's meant to look grainy, thats the way it was filmed. Another title in HD similar in that respect is Sleepy Hollow.

edit: found a review on it that mentions the intentional grain added.

Finally, a computer-generated "film grain" has been added to the mix, which gives the image a final coating of jumpiness, with obvious noise in every shot.

In my limited experience plasma look better than LCD.

However neither look as good under all conditions (ignoring screen size) than a good quality CRT.

It depends on what you're after. HD has a great realistic look in sports, news, and any show that wants to get across a sense of reality like a documentary or big brother type show. The grainy jumpy hazy film look that a lot of people love and use effects to try to emulate in HD, has a surreal feel that is good for story telling and fantasy and drama and even the wrinkles and stuff show up less, so it's more of an artistic quality.

AFAIK 300 was filmed in digital HD not film. Am I right? You need to see a different film that was filmed on film instead and see if it does the same thing which it shouldn't.

monaro, was that you talking to shawn and I about pinnacle was it?

yeah, 300 is grainy as hell, but it's meant to be that way. i was watching it in the cinema and noticed that and thought to myself at the time that it would be very noticable in the HD/bluray transfer.

if you want an example of a very good looking movie, superman returns looks amazing. apollo 13 is grainy though, but that's film noise, not compression noise. due mainly to not the best film transfer and age.

300 was on 35mm film, not digital. So *some* grain is actually a natural addition.

Consider that the entire film was shot with a Virtual Set (no locations), and spent about a year in post-production with LOTS of colour treatment. The same practice was used for Sin City. The purpose is to create a "comic book" feel, given both films are based off Frank Miller comics. (f*** the wankers that insist on calling them "graphic novels" - they're comic books!!)

Oh well bugger me... I assumed digital because of all the effects they used and the fact that it was 99% blue screen, oh and the way it looked.

I believe that if you can't at the very least spell Blu-ray properly, chances are you're also not paying enough attention to the specs of the two formats to be able to form an educated opinion on what "sucks" or not.

argh no the grammar police have got me!!

Spelling and grammar aren't the same thing dude.

And my point is, if you don't know the absolute basics of the formats (spelling for example), then there's a high chance you don't know if you've seen the formats demonstrated on a correct hi-fi setup.

I doubt harvey norman have it all set up properly :)

Wrong again.

Grammar is about how you use and string words together to form expressions and sentences. Orthography (of which spelling is a component) is how you use the alphabet to create said words.

Next time you look up wikipedia, read more than the first two sentences :)

it's ghey seeing decent technology getting dumbed down like this

at least it creates employment for those guys who 'dress up' high def porno stars for a living.

I'm begining to understand how the old guys out there felt that color was the end of old classic cinema. Flicking thru the James Bond series of movies kinda illustrates better than I can right now (because I'm busy getting s***faced :P) Where's the local Qgl film student when ya need him?

:P

And guess what, I was right.

I went to Harvey Norman in the valley and they had 3 projectors up. Each of them had a major problem:

1. One was way out of focus, blurred the Blu-ray movie enough to look like regular DVD.

2. The second was at an angle, image not lined up with the project screen at all.

3. Third one was very low-res, you could see the individual pixels/cells/whatever.

Also half the TVs they had with Blu-ray or HDDVD playing didn't actually support 1080p at all but were downscaling to the TV's lower native resolution.

The couple of screens they did have setup properly (1080p + Blu-ray/DVD) were insanely cool. The level of detail from the two formats is crazy.

so what you're basically saying is.. HN deserately need a Qgl 'n00bs' who'll be better than the average bloke they could hope to employ, and will do anything just to get the job for the experience, and HN will lucky to get that.

gee - who knew...

yeah, well the valley store aren't the brightest chaps in the constellation.

blockbuster only has bluray movies.
actually, that's not true. all blockbuster's will be getting bluray, however individual stores are able to get HD-DVD if they want to get them in, which chances are, most will be soon.
