I have a Canon PIXMA MP800 printer and have just recently run out of ink in all my cartridges (funny how the colour runs out when I just print black). I've just purchased new ones and installed them, yet my printer is still telling me that all the cartridges are empty or low(I have taken the stickers off the ink cartridges so I know these new ones arn't the problem). I no longer have the instruction booklet that came with the printer and I can't seem to find anything on the canon website about resetting the ink levels on the printer, so does anyone have any experiance with this kind of printer in resetting it?

canon printers suck. ours f***ed up. the light kept flashing and it wouldnt print. read that the problem could only be fixed by sending it away. instead of doing that we just bought a new one (diff brand).

funny how the colour runs out when I just print black a canon engineer told me this was due to the print head cleaning that consumes heaps of ink each time. |

Thats half true.
They use some ink to clean the print head, however canon printers are THE MOST COST EFFECTIVE inkjet printers on the market, and if you're complaining about the cost of canon, I'd hate to see your reaction to HP/Lexmark prices, or to the amount of prints from Epson/Brother cartridges. |

Most of the cheapies I've had didn't have a black cartridge, ie a cartridge manufacturers wet dream.
That nets you about six and a half rasterbated pages :( I now have a laser printer and my creativity knows no boundaries (they're friggin $100!!) |

But laser printers have their own issues. From SMH Article last month. Office printer could be posing as much danger to the lungs as a drag on a cigarette, according to air quality tests by Australian scientists. |

Apart from costing just as much if you want to print in colour... I disagree. After the initial outlay, a colour laser printer has a much cheaper cost per page then an inkjet. |

ara's right; there's no reason to get an inkjet unless you're printing photos.
And I've been through the same crap with inkjets with several brands, including Canon and Epson. Moral of the story: don't buy inkjets for sporadic printing, or really any printing other than photos. If you don't use inkjets for a few months you'll find they'll need to clean their heads which takes a fair bit of ink. They also need new ink cartidges on a regular basis. A company (allegedly Lexmark, wasn't it?) was also caught setting up ink cartidges so that their printer drivers will mark as empty after a certain date. It's also a widely-known secret that a lot of print companies sell their inkjet printers at a loss and make all their money on the ink. A laser printer prints better black and white and will be a lot cheaper in the long run. And unless you want photo-quality colour, then there's no problem with laser colour printers either. And now they're pretty cheap, which means that they become cheaper than inkjets a lot quicket now. Oh, and if you want to avoid Canon - good luck, a fair few brands use Canon technology in their smaller laser printers. Besides which, I assume there's a good reason why Canon is the leader in office printers, despite who they employ. |

I disagree. After the initial outlay, a colour laser printer has a much cheaper cost per page then an inkjet. There are a lot of factors that affect your cost per page.
Since I'm bored, I'll show you what I mean. Note that this is HUGE AND MESSY I worked this out assuming over its lifetime, the printer prints 1,000 pages in black and 5,000 pages in full colour. The Laser... ================ Canon LBP-5200 - $399 from Officeworks. The Consumables =================== This Canon uses the following... Black - 301BK - 5000p - $169 Cyan - 301C - 4000p - $189 Magenta - 301M - 4000p - $189 Yellow - 301Y - 4000p - $189 Drum - 301 - 20000 impressions - $349. NOTE: THIS PRINTER ONLY SHIPS WITH 1,000 PAGE TONERS! Consumables = 2.71x Printer Price Costs ======== 1,000 pages in black + 5,000 pages in full colour = starter toners + another set of toners + drum. Cost of printing 6000 pages = $169 + $189 + $189 + $189 + $349 = $1085. CPP = $1085 / 6000 = 0.180 (18c/page) TOTAL COST = $1085 + $399 = $1484 ================================================================= The Inkjet... ============== Canon IP5300 - $179 from Officeworks. The Consumables ================ This Canon uses the following Text Black - PG-5BK - 380pages - $28 Photo Black - CLI-8BK - 400pages - $28 Cyan - CLI-8CY - 400pages - $28 Magenta - CLI-8MA - 400pages - $28 Yellow - CLI-8YE - 400pages - $28 NOTE: THIS PRINTER SHIPS WITH FULL INK CARTRIDGES Consumables = 0.78x Printer Price. BUT... You can buy... 2x PGI-5BK for $44. CLI8's (4) for $92.90. Consumables = 0.64x Printer Price. Costs ======== 1,000 pages in black + 5,000 pages in colour Black ------ 1,000 / 380 = 2.63 (3) Starter + Twinpack = $44. Black = $44. Colour ------- 5,000 / 400 = 12.5 (13) Starter + 12x Value Pack = $1114.80 Total ----- CPP = $44 + $1114.80 = $1158.80 (19.3c/page) TOTAL COST = $1158.80 + $179 = $1337.80 ---------------------------------------------------- IN SUMMARY =========== Laser ------ Price = $399 Cost per page over 6,000 pages = 18c Total cost over 6,000 pages = $1484. Inkjet ------ Price = $179 Cost per page over 6,000 pages = 19.3c Total cost over 6,000 pages = $1337 Inkjet = $147 cheaper. ------------------------------------------ Conclusion ========== While 6,000 pages is a reasonable amount for a laser printer, its a HUGE amount of printing for an inkjet to do, even over its entire lifetime. You can still see how the inkjet costs less overall. last edited by mongie at 20:31:57 06/Aug/07 |

mongie; your calculations are a bit borked.
1) Why did you include the $349 drum with the laser? You're not doing 20,000 pages. The laser is now a few hundred cheaper. 2) Why did you choose 6000 pages? Pick 4000 and watch the laser be even more cheaper as you don't need the new laser cartidges. |

Anyhow, getting back to the original post. I also have an MP800......excellent printer btw. I've encountered a similar problem when changing the cartridges. Canon's official response was it is a faulty cartridge, return it for a replacement. (I get my cartridges for free so I just wacked in a new one) Fixed the problem instantly. Hasn't happened since and that was over 12mnths ago.

1) Why did you include the $349 drum with the laser? You're not doing 20,000 pages. The laser is now a few hundred cheaper. I thought I explained the difference between impressions and pages, I guess I didn't. If you print a page that has 3 colours on it, its 3 impressions. The drum is rated to 20,000 impressions, not 20,000 pages. 2) Why did you choose 6000 pages? Pick 4000 and watch the laser be even more cheaper as you don't need the new laser cartidges. You're wrong there too... The Laser only comes with STARTER TONERS - rated to 1000 pages each. Which means after 1,000 pages using all 4 colours, you need to replace them all. The only benefit of counting it at 4,000 pages is that you wouldn't have had to replace the drum yet. At 4,000 pages, you will have still had to pay $736 on consumables, and you'd be getting to the end of your drum's life as well. In fact... At 4000 pages (2000 colour, 2000 black) The Laser will have cost you $399 + $736 = $1135 The Inkjet will have cost you $179 + $481.60 = $660.6 <3 last edited by mongie at 14:14:09 07/Aug/07 |

Thats because the big ink is for text, and the little ink is for photos. The small cartridges are a lot more expensive per mL.

Um... I based both of my figures on what Canon say the printers should print.
What about waste toner? I guess I didn't take that into account either... |
