POLICE and security agencies will be given unprecedented "sneak and peek" powers to search people's homes and computers — without court approval — under legislation to go before Federal Parliament next week. http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/bill-to-let-police-search-homes-bug-phones/2007/07/31/1185647903672.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap1 I suck at linking. Pretty serious stuff going on here though, Federal Police being allowed to operate without warrants and without court approval. |

It also deals with "controlled operations" — undercover operations in which federal agents may undertake criminal activity to further their investigations. That's some pretty hardcore stuff right there, especially without any consent from a court. |

I heard on the radio today that this is a power which state police already have and it is only bringing national police inline - who probably dont give a s*** about your personal supply of weed and pills like the state police might.
whats the colour of a 2c pieceDIRRTYY COPAAAAAA!! edit: Just incase somone feels the need to "well if you heard it on the radio" it was during a JJJ news report, which had a sound byte of some politician or another commenting on the civil rights encroachment which this supposedly represents. Since state police already have this and no uproar was heard, there shouldnt be a reason blah blah blah. Either way... last edited by qmass at 18:25:09 01/Aug/07 |

I'm not against the actual operations, it's more the fact that the police are now their own monitoring agency. I got no problem with these types of warrants, but they should be served by a court of law, by a seperate entity rather then the one actually seeking them.
You got to also think ahead though. You give a little... then they take a lot. |

They are limiting it to crimes with 10 years jail time, which if they continue on the path of copyright infringement criminalisation will mean everyone on this forum could find themselves affected by these secret search laws.
They need to notify people after searches within a set period of time or go before a judge to justify why the notification should be further delayed. |

I caught up with our old service manager recently.. I thought it was cool that ol' Garth was back in police uniform nowadays.
it was cool having another ex-police dude on staff, but I alway kinda got the feel he was never really off-duty eh... vnc ftw ;) It also deals with "controlled operations" — undercover operations in which federal agents may undertake criminal activity to further their investigations. good thing that. as an CA/Intel fanboy I'n not allowed to read or post on gaming forums or something.. gee I hope work never here's about my rantings here... dammit - forgot to use my dodgy Qgl nick instead :/ |

The NSW Labor government’s cabinet, once again intoning the chant of “terrorism”, has agreed to introduce compulsory DNA testing for anyone arrested for any offence. The leaked cabinet decision was reported in the June 22 Sydney Sun-Herald. http://www.greenleft.org.au/2007/719/37340 Awesome! |

What's the big deal about DNA swab ?
Are we tin foil hatting that they are going to clone you ? Or is that they will record all your gene in some big database and give you a classification ala Gattica ? Or are you planning on breaking the law and are now concerned that they might be able to id you using DNA ? |

srsly, you think the coppers would spend all that time tapping phones and covert surveillance to nab someone who has done nothing wrong.
yesterday's article on the chatroom transcript where his cousin said nothing had been discovered about Haneef yet, and that he should leave Australia ASAP. I mean if that isn't sus what is. And then there are reports he tried to call UK police four times after the attempted bombings.... what did he know? He can stay in India. |

Well I dunno I mean fine arrest the bastard straight up, but I mean a Magistrate, with s***loads more facts than any of us, with the whole world watching, figured it was ok to let a potential terrorism suspect off on a $10,000 bail. 10Grand. Cmon that is nothing.
It's the whole lets lock the towelhead up afterwards with no proof that s***s me, prior to an election where these guys, just like demon says are trying to seduce us again into the whole Tampa 'vote with your prejudice'. fukn joke! |

This is what i dont get. This "top secret evidence" that bill calims to have......is he using this against haneef to justify canceling haneef's visa? or is this top secret evidence mean't to prove that he's actually guilty of being involved in terrorism? if the later then why is he coming out with this evidence after haneef was proven innocent? and since he is not guilty of any involvement in terrorism how does that still make him someone of bad character? to me it sounds like another excuse to gradually move towards a policed state. (omg freemasons bro!)
Lucky my names' not Mohammed.Or Osama for that matter. Sadly though, that's prolly what it all came down to. Hard times ahead, especially for my fellow towelheads. last edited by Bullet Rain at 13:35:38 02/Aug/07 |

Looks like the bill passed, funny how these new powers of investigation suddenly changed from going after ppl up for 10yrs+ sentences to now 3yrs+ in 1 week.
