So just got back from advanced screening of Transformers.

No real spoilers here; I thought it was really good except for a few typical Michael Bay-isms; fortunately I was ready to accept those as part of the unwritten social contract one accepts when venturing into a Michael Bay movie so was well prepared and didn't suffer too much shock. If you can deal with a lame love story sub-plot, over-the-top dramatic dialogue and scenes, and an exclusively USA viewpoint then you'll probably be OK.

Quick notes:
- Visual effects are really, really impressive. The trailer shows off a bunch of them, but fortunately there are even more in the city.
- It was surprising how many people in there hadn't seen the trailer (or at least, still found the same jokes funny). I guess they give those advanced screening tickets out to any jerks, even those that don't see the movie.
- I found the actual Transformers to be a little complicated, but they were still pretty awesomely cool. I struggled at some points to understand what they were saying; the voice effects were either clouding the speech too much or the volume was simply up too loud.
- Script was generally pretty good; some decent funny moments and the overall thing was good.
- I found it wavered a little bit between too hardcore for kids (some of the robot scenes I can imagine being pretty scary for younger types) and too weak for adults (no blood except for scratches and no humans getting torn up by massive giant Decepticon killing machines). I guess that's what you do when you want as massive audience as possible though - gotta make the big bucks.
- Definitely lining up for a sequel.
- A couple of really excessively long drawn out scenes that were a little annoying (for anyone else that's seen it - the scene when the kid is looking for the glasses. SRSLY!!!!
- The main chick was hot in a Tea Leoni sort of way.
- Really, really, really ridiculously lame computer tech stuff. Seriously. It's just embarassing.

Overall it was a pretty good watch; definitely the most enjoyable movie I've seen at the cinemas for a while. Go see it.

Visual effects were pretty incredible, but for the most part it was too over the top. In fight scenes and close up shots of the transformers I couldn't really tell who or what I was looking at.

The computer tech stuff was ridiculous and not needed. If they wanted a bunch of teenagers in the movie I'm sure they could do it without patronising the audience.

Comedy element for the first half was surprisingly good! The second half of the movie got a bit more serious.

I found the Transformers far easier to understand than the humans in the louder scenes, especially in the first army base scene and the desert one that followed - I couldn't hear what the hell they were yelling.

The sound overall was too loud and too full on. The soundtrack was always blaring even in the loud parts of the movie which I thought was totally unnecessary.

Overall it's definitely worth seeing in the cinema but consider taking ear plugs.

I know EXACTLY what you mean by this, it's so uncanny.

TBH I was a big transformer fan as a kid, but I'm not too excited about this movie, doesn't look true enough to the original.

Except they weren't programming the stargate, they were programming 15 super computers that interfaced with the stargate through a series of impulses that Carter has discovered by studying the stargate. This is discussed around season 4, and from that point on we sometimes see Carter or McKay use these medical suction cup things on crystal that hook into the USB port on their dell laptop.

It's seriously so bad that it would bring any awesome movie down. Overall in the plot it doesn't even play any role except to involve the hot aussie chick who is way too tanned anyways.

I thought the same when they started making jokes, but to be honest they were actually quite well done and pretty funny and added to the movie.

You guys crack me up. Like they are making this movie to be "realistic". We're talking about 20' tall walking, talking, transforming robots ffs. I am looking forward to seeing this moving with my 6yr old son who is mad keen on transformers. In the end thats who this movie is for, how many of you are going to rush out and buy all the merchandise and watch this movie 50 times in the next 12 months?

You want to pick at a movies realism then at least go after a movie that is claiming to be factually based.

That's the sort of attitude that resulted in the last Star Wars movies sucking balls!

I don't think its too big an expectation to expect something decent. I remember when I got my first transformer toy in like 1984. It's a big deal from my childhood (like Star Wars) and its annoying when people f*** things like that up!

Fortunately Transformers I think came out pretty well. Modernised for today's Internets audience, etc, and still keeping some of the oldskool Transformers action.

The movies that I have enjoyed most in the past are ones like Star Wars (original trilogy) that, although complete fantasy, make a small part of you want it to be true and believe it could be. Same goes for Lord of the Rings (I didn't read the books).

As far as Transformers goes, I think it was largely made for adults who enjoyed the cartoon as kids just as much if not more than kids these days who probably haven't even heard of transformers. There was no need to have silly 18 year old computer hacking geniuses in the movie... and like I said before, it was just so there were more hot chicks.

PS I wrote that before I read trog's post.

I'm not sure this isn't such a bad thing trog. Surely you recall the rock version of it from the 1980s animated movie.. now I think about it, that would've been a bit funky - even if it was relegated to the end credits only.

Ok, just saw this movie today.

Positives (and the ONLY positives)
-The transformers themselves (Decepticons were AWESOME, especially Starscream)
-The action scenes that involved s*** getting destroyed (either humans/transformers) BY transformers

Negatives (just some of, too many to list)
-(attempted) comedy, often out of place (fat black guy was funny though)
-Too many ebay references
-Inconsistencies in combat regarding transformers
-Not enough human killing, I was praying Starscream would just f*** up a whole city
-s***ty acting/script for the secret government group.
-As pointed out, the technology references made me want to cry
-That blonde haired chick that was doing an accent (what accent was that btw?)
-Too much time wasting by that turd of a kid (main actor knob).

I could go on for ever, I give it 2.5 stars... very, very disappointed.

Wow, thats pretty much the complete opposite of what I thought. I just got back from seeing it in Gold Class and I thought it was absolutely awesome, most fun I've had watching a movie for years. Not only did it live up to every single one of my expectations but it surpassed them. I'm so used to be disappointed by big, over-hyped movies that I'm looking forward to, but this one didn't disappoint me at all. The not-quite-right computer bits didn't even bother me, and normally that stuff bothers me, but I was just way too caught up in it all toc care. I guess if I had one criticism it would be that I wish Starscream had more screen time, though at least Megatron got a chance to pay him out for being a noob :P

If you don't see this at the cinemas, you're doing yourself a disservice.

I second what Khel said ... was fraking awesome! Similar to trog I also got my first transformer toy back in 84 and must say that loved it more than anything at the time (even more than my he-man toys) ... if I was the rate it out of 5 I would have given it a 4.9 ... the only reason why not 5 was cause i didn't get to see boobies ... LoL

I thought it was a decent movie and deserved my 8 buckaroos.

My main complaint was the shakey camera. I mean why on earth do they have to distort the action when it's all basically just CGI?!? It was hard making out just who was who in action intensive scenes with all the closeup shots of super extra mega detailed chunks of spinning and grinding metal. (excluding one or two scenes like that scorpion transformer flying out of the sand in slow motion)

Otherwise it was an entertaining watch and must be seen on the big screen to be fully enjoyed (and confused).

This was basically a good movie. In terms of cartoon/comic adaptations it's the best one I have seen apart from spiderman 1.

It was far too long and there were not enough transformer noises. Funnily enough I enjoyed the whole cube sub-story. It was an entertaining diversion.

The special effects were superb. Better than silver surfer anyways. I would rate it 4/5.

what is wrong with you people? i'm with Khel, i enjoyed it, and had the most fun at a movie in a long time.

c'mon, good jokes that actually work and lighten the mood, starscream getting slapped down, fantastic action sequences.

that chick's accent is real, it just sounds weird in a movie full of americans. yes, the panasonic memory card pause was annoying, but only slightly. as for the computer tech, c'mon, they have to make it simple enough for the peons. remember, computer nerds aren't the entire movie going population

I was most pleasantly surprised, but then I walked in expecting a piece of s***.

All up, I'd say the only thing holding the movie back was Michael Bay. I thought the jokes were funny and an important part of the movie. It kinda helped enforce the idea that humans are quite unimportant and powerless in the struggle, and we really need the autobots to protect us. The story wasn't too bad. I thought the megalomania and ego of Megatron was well done, like when he's all like 'disgusting' and swats humans away from him. I found it kinda silly though how that one robot died (forgot which one) and they're like 'oh he fought well' yet I didn't really care, but I found it really sad when Bumblebee was getting captured and when his legs got pwnt.

Overall, good movie but needed more robots fighting, more transforming sounds/scenes and more STARSCREAM!

Thought it was awesome..but

every scene with the aussie chick, the hacking, the black dude - pointless. It went nowhere. The guy 'hacked' the code on his s***house home pc instantly, and they didn't even use the information for anything. If they deleted all those scenes then the movie would have been a better length too.

Disapointed megatron didnt look more like the original. Hopefully when they revive him in sequels they'll make him look more like that, or galvatron.

Starscream should have had his whiny cartoon voice as it suits him better, and he should have had more of a role through the movie.

Also, there's no way optimus could have survived a shot from megatron's canon so it really should have missed him and blown up half the city.

Well they didn't get a chance to, they were taken in by the govt agents - it was just a way to bring them into the action.

But yeah the movie could've done with a few less characters - I liked the black guy though (what happened to him in the end, last I remember he sent the morse code message and that was it??)

Yeah it was Jazz who was destroyed. Probably better if they killed off Bumblebee, but that would've been too obvious I guess.

It was great, I was having such a good time watching Autobot hijinx and Decepticons blowing s*** up that I wasn't bothered by the odd bit of cheese. The humour and the human element in general was quite entertaining. It could have been at a tighter pace but all in all it was lots of fun.

As a fan of the originals I thought the buildup to having the other Transformers arrive and eventually start fighting was especially well done. Having them track the kid down at the start then the worlds gradually colliding was a really cool way to introduce it, there were all the right elements there to give it that nostalgic feeling and still keep everyone interested.

Why? I thought the design was good for Megatron - massive, imposing and generally screaming "I'm a badass". Or would've you prefered him running around with a trigger for a crotch and an oversized canon on his arm?

I saw it last night and thought it was great. I think it had the transformers feel to it, and I agree with Khel - it was fun. What Trog said about the Michael Bay-isms I would agree with .. as long as you're expecting them then you don't cringe as much when they happen. I thought the comedy was well done, it wasn't lame or too often. Starscream was awesome, but he needed that high pitched whiney voice from the cartoons IMO. I hope that cd player wasn't meant to be a Soundwave replacement, he was the coolest character!

Can't wait for a sequel .. hopefully they include other cool characters like Soundwave, Hotrod etc, and of course Megatron has to return as Galvatron!

Also, after the battle scene in the city and megatron died, they didn't show what happened to the rest of the decepticons or the new transformers made from the drink machine and the other thing. Where'd they all go? They didn't even show them running away or anything.

Also, they didn't show enough of optimus battling megatron - that's what u watched 10 episodes of the cartoon for just waiting to see!

Yeah, I wondered what happened to the transformer made out of the drink machine too :P Also, I wondered why all the machines that the Allspark brought to life were evil, I mean, the Autobots got created by it too and they weren't evil. I thought maybe they were gonna use it to bring that tow truck to life and it'd be some badass good guy.

Also, on the topic of decepticons getting owned, how hard did Bonecrusher get owned, Optimus laid the smack down on him HARD. f***en energy sword BAM decapitated.

Also, the police car and the scorpion dude didn't get killed, so they could be back in a sequel along with Starscream.

I think the idea is they can scan objects in their surrounds and transform into them (ie, they can transform into pretty much everything). That's certainly the implication when a bunch of them land and they're looking at objects in their surrounds (plus Bumblebee switching to the faget new Camero presumably as part of more product placement s***) instead of the old leet one

I was standing next to this asian guy in the line and he had a transformer's shirt on PLUS his ringtone was the transformer's theme song.

You could tell he was a big fan from the look in his eyes.

Thinking of giving it a miss until after the school holidays so I don't have to deal with laser pointers and idiots talking and giggling through the movie.

I went and saw it in Gold Class, its worth it imo just so you don't have to deal with a cinema full of shmucks ruining the movie. Plus, you get people bringing you beer to drink during the movie, can't top that (the gold class down here, or the "Director's suite" as its called at Hoyts, even has buttons on the chairs so you can call for service during the movie and order and pay for stuff during the movie without leaving your seat, awesome stuff).

storyline was decent, the love story was pretty crappy but who gives a fk the chick was fine

modelling fkn rocked.. even though it wasn't a realistic it still looked it

some of the little jokes in there were pretty good

and it was the first film i've walked out going .. damn good film instead of.. great another let down

Took my 10yr old to see it last night, really enjoyed it...yeh the comedy was a bit lame but I reckon the lead pulled it off. One of the best lines said in the movie was lost on the audience because they were laughing at the site gag of the bots when they were trying to hide from his Mum and Dad in the house scene. The dad says to the wife when the power was dropping in and out, "Hey honey we better call the city, I think we might have blown a Transformer" I was cacking and everyone else missed the damn line!

Hi there,

Long time QGL reader, first time poster...

Considering this is a gaming forum I'm kinda surprised no-one else has mentioned this, but did anyone else notice Ironhide's rocket jump? Classic.

Also did anyone happen to catch what happened to Barricade?

Best movie I've seen in years btw

The black GMC truck with the plasma cannons. Not much at all like his original cartoon look.

I would have preferred if they kept more of the original series' personalities in-tact, particularly Starscream. Jazz was pretty spot on and then they kill him off. Optimus was f***ing awesome though.

The movie bored me...horribly simple story with no twists, many lame jokes, a lot of things that simply made me go WTF?!

For instance...we have these massive Autobots in the city, and they send Sam off on FOOT with the cube, while they guard him. Why not drive him straight there, or pick him up and carry him?

And after the massive fight in the middle of San Francisco...they claim that they're still a SECRET? I'm sure no one got a video of the transformers battling it out downtown.

I'm not saying everything has to be super realistic, but some of the stuff that went on didn't make any sense.

Having said that, the action scenes were pretty good, but far too much of the usual close-up-shaky-cam view.

Time to point out another useless addition to the movie. A noob kid, arguing with a top secret government organisation about a juvi record... like WTF!

I love how convincing all the police/government/military organisations were in the movie. I've seen corny s*** before, but ffs... the scene where they raided the house and the parents are back chatting with the so called "leader"... get SOME sort of realism into it.

Another thing that peeved me off, incosistencies in combat.

Why was Frenzy able to infilitrate Air Force One, kill a large amount of highly skilled guards (I assume) and just generally kick ass. Yet later on, he can't kill an geriatric pencil pusher and an overexaggerated aussie chick with old shotguns? That scene was just a complete waste of time... they didn't need to live, just kill them FFS.

yeh deconstruct a kids action movie, what a genius lol.

such a great movie, saw it on opening night, just saw it again and aside from growing up with the original toon, i haven't thought about transformers since but i am so glad it did justice to the nostalgia of such an awesome franchise. like Khel said, i've seen it with 13 different people all up and both groups of my friends were just gobsmacked at how cool it was. the way the models turned out was unbelievable, i was worried when the first stills appeared, but i was truly blown away, genius even. keeping in mind it is a blockbuster from a cartoon franchise aimed at 5-14year olds, the story and acting was surprisingly awesome, hilarious even. when this hits on HDDVD or BLURay i'll probably fork out for a huge widescreen just for it, those fx were mindblowing.

I have just seen the film, I thought it was great.

I really wasn't expecting a great deal of depth and was glad there weren't any glaring plot errors.

I am not a software designer, but I am studying electronics, as c is the code used to program chips(other than straight assembly) perhaps they were trying to diplay a lower level of hacking rather than a higher level at the actual software end of the stick. So going straight to the electronics totally overiding the software security. I didn't pay attention to the code on the screen it might have just been junk.

I could be totally wrong. I certainly wasn't looking for those sort of details, but I was impressed with the military detail. I thought they seemed to show a good understanding of the vehicles and armory the military can use.

The fluff, such as the romance and humor, I liked, I even mentioned it during the movie that I thought it was a good touch. It is entertainment and I found it very entertaining.

I have a feeling it really does depend on your expectations and what sort of film you were hoping for.

If anybody knew the difference between getting stabbed by a "Chub" and glow bowling, it would have to be Obes.

---

I thought the movie was ok. It didn't ruin my childhood and it was about a million times better than The Craptastic 4: The rise of Shiny Dollar. Although, it suffered from the same problem that "The Hulk" had, which was too much focus on stupid plot and romance and not enough mindless action, or as Obes so eloquently identified the problem with "The Hulk", it needed more "HULK SMASH" type scenes.

The initial scene with the helicopter was f***ing awesome. It made me think of Mechwarrior or even Epic 40k. Then there was an hour and a half of advertising with a scattering of amusing, or action oriented scenes, followed up by a scene that tried so very hard to be heterosexual and yet still left, what I'd imagine to be, the after taste of a salty milk injection. Then again, it was a f***ing kids movie, so who am I to complain.

The best part of the whole day is when Xzyyz finally managed to buy his ice cream and come in and I welcomed him with my traditional greeting of "nigga!" only to hear from behind us ... "Mummy, what's a n*****?". I laughed.

Saw it over the weekend, was ok, nothing great just some mindless fun

I did appreciate the subtle hints to the old show, they always seemed to be fighting around dams and desert in the cartoon, Spoiler:
and at the end when they dump the remains of the decepticons in the ocean, I figured was a subtle hint to the underwater base they had in the cartoon

Not me, I laughed.

I walked out saying, "I think the movie could've done with more pop culture references". I didn't realise Bay was known for them. That being said, I thought they were pretty well done considering and they certainly didn't make me cringe like I'd expect me to.

blu-ray ... regionalised ... sony ... you lose!

HD-DVD ... not regionalised ... you win!

If we as consumers buy into blu-ray (players or media), we are supporting the stupidity that is regionalisation. Blockbuster, JB etc might say Blue-ray this blu-ray that, but if consumers are informed and demand unregionalised HD-DVD they will happily change their stance because the customer in the end is always right.

Sony has shown that the purpose behind their regionalisation is all about being able to charge different markets different rates for the identical product. And if PS3 prices are anything to go on, we will be by far the most expensive market.

Remember Sony are the guys that put root kits on the audio CDs ...

I had a few beefs with it - note this may or may not be considered a SPOILER

a) Transformers were searching for the all spark too, they find it and instead of bailing with it they give it to some kid, surely if its all powerful creator of life blah blah blah they could have done something with it straight up.

b) The transformer civilization was good and just etc etc until Megatron yet every thing the cube touches comes out shooting....

c) No transforming into giant cannon :-(

d) "We've found the all spark, now lets go and hide in the middle of the city so we can protect the humans and make sure they don't get hurt" - so much safer than fighting in the desert they drive past.

e) To many slow dialogue scenes talking about how they're going to do something in minute detail.

f) To many ebay references.

g) Trying to cover up a giant fricken robot battle in the middle of a city.

All in all I expected crap and got much better than I'd hoped for, although it needed more Starscream and it needed way more Optimus opening a can of whoopass.

Also the Dinobots better show up eventually (I'm assuming sequels) and the "destructercons" - I can't remember the name but they transformed 4 or 5 into one gigantic one.

Finally that chick is damned hot, eternal gratitude to a spooties thread of her.

they had no spark, or soul in other terms, so they had no "intelligence", therefore they just shot at s***.

Finally got around to watching it today and thought it was great. The intro was prolly my favourite part with the chopper coming in. The only bit I didn't like was the battle at the end with the kid running around with the cube. And the way he defeated Megatron with it, it just seemed too rushed. And how did he activate the cube to kill him anyway? Maybe I missed something but it looked like he held the cube up towards Megatron and then it went into his chest and destroyed him.

Anyway, awesome movie and I hope the sequel is just as good.

When your great, great grandfather found evil robot Hugo Weaving in the arctic, he accidentally activated him, which resulted in his location being imprinted on the glasses you tried to sell on eBay. And when I say location, I am referring to the location that Hugo would later be transported to by your government.

Not wanting to mock their mocking. However it was pretty clear to me that the imprint on the glasses was the location of the 'All Spark' and not Megatrons.

Rest holds up though.

They built the dam AROUND the All Spark.

They transported Megatron TO the All Spark location.

The Glasses had the LOCATION OF THE ALL SPARK (i.e. Hoover Dam) imprinted on them.
