It doesn't have a huge price tag compared to its competitors. I pay ~AUS$1000 for my last 2 PDA phones, the iphone is US$499 (4GB) and US $599 (8GB) according to the presentation when it was announced. You have to sign on for a 2 year contract with a phone company when you buy it (which i've read elsewhere isn't used to subsidise the cost of the phone), but in australia you already need to take a phone contract if you want affordable data rates, it's not like you can affordably use a pre-pay phone for any real sort of data traffic.

Those prices above may be the price when included with a contract, we don't know yet. But for people that purchase pda+phones outright, it doesn't seem excessive. Especially considering that it appears significantly more usable in regards to multimedia than any of the Windows Mobiles I've had.

Sure, if you get a freebie phone on a $40 plan then it's super expensive, but you may not be their target market... yet.

looking forward to the bulls*** telco politics that will delay this phone's release in australia

aside from features like the IDed voicemail which may need specific support from the network, what does it matter which telco you use the phone with?

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Safari browsing experience changes mobile browsing. It looks like a really interesting and innovative way to deliver web pages to a small screen (reminds me of the Microsoft magic stuff we saw recently where you zoom out/zoom in to navigate around large media/documents).

Browsing on a portable device is currently a pain in the balls and this looks like it might possible change that - at the very least it'll make life easier.

I'm far too lazy to look this up myself.

Does the iPhone (or any other PDA thingy) include support for 802.11ish wireless networking / internet access?

I looked into a Blackberry at a Telstra shop, and it was amassive soft-on to note that the onlyway to get on the net with it was to go thorugh mega-expensive G3 :(

You tried opera mini? I use it on my phone when telstra goes down :)

edit: holy s*** I want one of these even though I'll probably never use most of the features :p
