How would one go about finding a talented lead guitarist? Is there classifieds for this sort of thing or what? How are bands formed from random people etc?

No i mean like, if there's a really talented singer/songwriter/rythm guitarist, how would he/she go about finding a lead guitarist to accompany him/her?

I remember reading one of those free music magazines (called Scene or something) and it had like a classified section where people would advertise themselves as drummers/singers/guitarists or whatever and give an example of what sort of bands they sound like/prefer to play like.

music store bulletin boards, classifieds/papers as you said, local music community rags. and I suspect these days, also in online forums etc which you can prolly find in good old google http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=find+musicians+brisbane&meta=cr%3DcountryAU

Time Off has a pretty good classified section and also a very healthy forum. Might be the place to look...
As Time Off point out often, it is the place where the two guys from Savage Garden found eachother. |

Bingo. Even though Darren Hayes continues to punish us with his solo efforts and Daniel is producing fairly obscure bands, I don't think either would ever have to work again if they didn't want to.

Pretty sure we got our new guitarist from an add in time off or rave.
Be prepared for most people to not turn up when they say or at all, most to be s*** and some that are good but just dont fit for some reason. Eventually you'll find someone that is suited. |

Rave has a much, MUCH more active classified section that Time Off. Go and post your free ad, and if you get it in before tuesday it'll get printed in that week's press, as well as being viewable online. That's your best bet. |

I'm avaliable for a trial if want to PM me.
Been playing for around 8 years. Only problem is I've only got a 100 watt combo ATM, loud enough for practices/jams and smaller gigs though. I've been trying to get a band together for years, got sick of it and started focusing on my own solo stuff. EDIT: I'm at Wynnum now, but willing to travel 30 - 40 mins in any direction. last edited by CHUB at 13:53:12 21/May/07 |

I'll put down some technical details, I'll PM you my mobile number and you can call me if you want to meet up and jam in person.
At the moment my 16th note speed is at 160bpm (144 for really technical passages and string skipping). My legato speed is 180 - 190bpm at 16th notes. I got the core skills in sweep picking (typical 3/5/6 string patterns for major/minor/diminished arpeggio's). Same goes for tapping (typical major/minor/diminshed/augmented triads in their root positions and inversions). I'm comfortable playing in the majority of keys when playing via intervals and linear fragments, or I can play in all keys when using moveable modes and chords. I'm really familar with improvising in Ionian, Mixolydian and Aeolian modes... the others I can still manage though... and of course being a rock guitarist I'm extremely comfortable playing Minor Pentatonic and Blues scale licks. As for rhythm, since I'm a lead guitarist I haven't studied much in depth... but I can comp jazz fairly well (and know a lot of positions) for Major 7th, Minor 7th, Dominant 7th and the basic altered chords (b9, b5, #9, #5). Also all you basic rock triads, double stops, power chords and other junks are second nature. Also, RAVE magazine has a good section in the back, my brother found the majority of his band members from their ads. |
