Valve have released a neat video clip showing off their leet skillz:
We are pleased to announce that the next generation of facial animation technology for Source will be released in Team Fortress 2. By leveraging the rapid pace of advancement in PC graphics, videogames can now match and actually surpass the facial animation used in feature film and broadcast television production. We've released a video of this real-time, in-game, in-engine facial animation in action in support of ATI's launch of the Radeon HD 2000 series. By running entirely on the GPU of the videocard, the facial animation not only looks dramatically better, but frees up the CPU to perform other tasks like physics or AI.
If you've got Steam you can watch it directly through the Steam client, or you can download it locally from AusGamers.

That video was awesome.

I'd nearly like to see a whole movie made based on TF2

Yeh it's pretty freakin' cool. It would be totally weird (and awesome) if they could somehow meld the facial animations with the VOIP parts so when you talk to your teammates, your character lipsyncs to what you're saying.

well i'm not sure if it will quite be a jump as big as that. But i wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't require some sort of decent amount of grunt to pull off.

I'm just curious because i'm in the market for a new card. And i'm also hoping that this will be playable under Wine

hehe TF2 still looks as if they still have that quirky NOLF2 kind of humour happening and I like that a lot. Looking forward to playing it a lot also.

That Nvidia footage was very impressive to say the least...

Oh man come out already, I have been hanging for a sweet fps multiplayer game of late... nothing has delivered recently.

They definately made the correct choice in steering away from realism imo.

Duke Nukem Forever ?

I remember the in game vid they release a few years ago of that, it looked impressive at the time. Not sure if they have burried the project but they should have stuck with their original engine choice and got it out.

Word on the street (if i remember correctly) is that they are taking out grenades as they think it makes the game to spammy.

I hope they were joking about the grenades. How else is a medic going to take out a fatty-no-skills?

I read it in some interview and they said they had grenades but after heaps of play testing said it played better without 'em. They also said people would be saying 'wtf' because grenades and secondary grenades were such a big part of TFC.

I believe only certain classes get grenades.

It really is great to see "Robin's baby" working over time.

Removal of the grenades was a gameplay issue due to the fact that the medic was not based on movement. The scout was the primary 'movement factor'. If you just gave the medic concussion grenades you would be over-riding the whole scout with speed thing.

That is why John Cook and Robin Walker removed the grenades. Sure its a revoluntionary elemental thing and a lot of old school TF players will complain about it but with all the server side modding that has been done over the years with MegaTF for TF and NeoTF for TFC it will be interesting to see how TF2 holds up.

A lot of the professional TFC (or TF players) will hate me for saying this, but somethings just have to be done. Classes in TFC have movement limits for various reasons. In many ways concussion jumping is a skill in it self. But TFC is not deathmatch. Its 'TEAM' Fortress for a reason and thusly its called "TF2" not TFC2 or TFC Source.

I am not disagreeing that the removal of the grenades is justified. BUT at the end of the day TF-anything is Robin's bitch. There have been people out of the TFC community that have said "Oh Robin didn't consult us." well. He did come to Melbourne for the Game Developers Conference in 2004 you could of asked him, then why he hasn't taken a deeper interest in the people who still actually play TFC (or TF).

But anyway... All my blathering a side. Love it or hate it. It is going to be VERY INTERESTING to see what if anything after 8 years of development TF2 is going to bring. Did we forget to mention 'dynamic maps' that modify the game flow. I think we did.

No Grenades...

GI: I was pretty surprised that you pulled grenades out. I was looking for grenades and they’re gone. There are no grenades outside of the Demoman's grenade launcher. That’s a pretty big deal.

Walker: So the grenades thing was something that just fell straight out of our philosophy of, we had some theory’s of why these are hurting us, we removed them as a playtest against many of our own objections. “We can’t do this!” and then within two days everyone was like, “Wow! This plays so much better without these.” The reasons we tried were things like grenades are 90% spam in the game so which we tend to think that spam is a negative.

They reduce class differentiation a lot and this was the key killer of what made us do it. If everyone is carrying around a grenade everyone has the same capabilities in that way. A Demoman with a grenade is the same as a Spy with a grenade. With grenades we’re reducing that sharp line of class differences.

The clans really don’t play Scout at all. They play Medic because the conc jump [ed: Concussion Grenade jumping] is the same so the Medic and the Conc is so much about the skill of using a Medic in TFC to capture flags. The conc itself invalidated the Scout itself. It just said, “don’t play me, this class is better.” When we removed those the lines between classes became stronger and more significant.

please, conc jumping took all of like 20 minutes to learn and at most a few days to get good at

don't pretend it was some sort of skill that sets the good TF players apart from the bad.

i'm really looking forward to this, i just hope i can run it on the lunix without having to install XP

I dont really care that grenades are gone, I just wanted them to be in there cos the demo man throwing his cluster grenade looked so cool in the trailer :(

At the end of the day though, its an entirely new game, its not like its a remake of the original TF like TFC was, so nothing says it has to be exactly the same game TF was (and tbh it'd be disappointing it if was, we've all played that, give us something new).

id like to see it in action, but i'm not sold on the no grens idea. Yes medic was used alot more in some instances but it depended on the map. The medic still has to run the flag back to the base anyway. Maybe they need to add new types of grens, medic shouldnt have cuss but scout should, gren 1 + pipe for demoman was lethal and should be kept and the pyro napalm was annoying as s*** but that suited the class because pyros are annoying as s*** anyway :)
