also I hope rain doesn't have a deciding factor in the game, coz that'd suck.

I was the two teams going hard at each other for 50 overs!

Punter won the toss and is batting first, let's see 400 :p

What did they say the outlook is like? (I was out and could only see the rain falling on the TV, not hear what they were saying.)

if no play in the next 3 hours it'll be delayed until tomorrow

cross fingers it's totally rained out, I want a proper 50 over a side match, not some mickey mouse 30 or 35 over thing, after all it's the world cup final FFS!!!

I reckon it's fairly doubtful that there will be much play tonight.

11.40am No sooner have we been told a tale of gloom, that the covers are again coming off and the umpires have appeared. It's still drizzling, though. Could it be that TV channels are dictating that the game ought to be played today?

and now...
11.45am Massive cheers as the last of the covers comes off, and the Sri lankans come onto the outfield to warm-up ... again. "At least the raindrops have been musical," says a bored Andrew Miller. "The one dripping next to me fits the soca rhythm very nicely ..." Now we are told a 12.15pm start and 38 overs a side. Believe it when it happens.

Oh well there we go, Windies weather is so unpredictable. Now it's almost Sunny over there.

Must also mention it looks like the Aussies have a fair bit of support around the grounds.

Two big wickets! Sangakkara and Jayasuriya were both set, playing well and needing to accelerate. With rain threatening again that puts the D/L target almost out of reach for at least the short term.

Rain-based victory = teh suck.

I wasn't happy with 38 overs each, but this is worse.

They might get back on.... however even if there wasn't any rain I'd find it hard to see Sri Lanka winning from here, so a win at this point to the Aussies wouldn't exactly be outrageous.

yeah we win, but I agree with creepy, it's a s***ty way to win.

We were dominating so hard woulda been better to bat another 12 overs and get 400+ and bowl them out cheaply :p

You can't see s***. And the light got significantly worse during all those shenanigans, so it makes the decision to play on even more absurd.

6.17pm It's what is traditionally known as night. It is so dark but the umpires are now saying the match will continue. Heads should roll for this. The man is out putting the 30-yard circles back out. He needs a torch to do so. The batsmen are heading out to the middle accompanied by a guide dog.

6.15pmThis is a very unfunny joke, almost as if cricket was determined to show the world that it couldn't organise a whatsit in a brewery. The umpires are insisting the game is not over, everyone else thinks it is. Aleem Dar seems to be saying they can all come back tomorrow.

Steve Bucknor's looking quite embarrassed in the background, letting Dar lead the process. Jayawardene is now on the pitch to talk to Bucknor and Bowden.

6.12pmAnd the farce continues! Now the stands for the ceremony have been brought on... and are off again, as the umpires shoo them away. My word. Here's a man who can tell you more, it's Martin.

Now what's this? Aleem Dar is having a word with Australia, telling them they can't yet celebrate. Officially this match isn't over. You couldn't make it up. You don't have to.

In fairness, this doesn't stop Australia celebrating. McGrath's all of a beam and there's a thumbs up and a smile for the tv cameras.

The light's been offered and Sri Lanka have taken it - meaning Australia have won the World Cup again. They certainly deserve it and are huddling in celebration. A bit of a damp squib of an ending, which is of course fitting.

jesus f***ing christ, what a farce!

talk about f***ed up administration... the tournament went too long and then they allowed this s*** to happen, what a joke.

I am sure there'll be some changes in administration because of this, there has to be!

Yep, farce is the word. Obviously Jayawardene knew they had no chance and just wanted to get it done, but they should have let him conceed the match (if the commentators speculation that that's what he tried to do is correct). The only reason I can see them sticking to the rules is to prevent complaints from the opposition, but if the captain conceeds the game that takes it out of the equation.

Considering the ICC has been bought by the sub continent (every 3rd cup must now be played in India/Pak/SL/Bang - which makes them next again), they will go where the money is.

This tournament, like our own international ODI series, needs fixing - it's too long.

To be honest Fade, it's our fourth appearance, third consecutive win, and something few people doubted would turn out differently.

The ending today just made Cricket administration look rediculous and archaic.

I still rate the recent Ashes series as a bigger win for Australia.

I tried to stay up to watch this but was too tired; hit the sack before the first ball - thought I'd try to get up early to see the end of it (assuming it went that long) but I awoke to see McGrath getting Player of the Series with a massive s***-eating grin which I assumed meant Australia had one (followed shortly by the medal ceremony which confirmed it!)

Sounds like Gilly's innings was one to see though

and i changed gilly from captain :( (qlg world cup dream team)

would have come 2nd instead of 6th if i had left him. damnit

also only about 200pt difference between the teams 2-8 pretty close ending.

but it was always going to be hard to chase that total. gw gilly nice way to finish off a pretty avg world cup for him personally.

:(

australia deserved to win the world cup, but i cant help but feel ripped off at the way this ended. It feels like when australia lost to italy, and when lowndes lost to rick kelly for the championship. it deservedly was won by the better team but it seems such a hollow victory

the duckworth lewis adjusted scores not being shown properly (meaning that jayasuria and sangakarra started trying to hit out before the rain came) and then an iffy call to jayawardene... right down to the s*** at the end where jayawardene tried to concede, but they wouldnt let him?!

apparently the match referee accepted responsibility saying that he shouldve known the rules but meh

anyway, mad props to gilly, he has a tendancy of getting a big score when he needs it.. and to australia for batting and bowling well. sri lanka did well, but it wasnt enough given the circumstances :/

The right team won in the end and the history books will reflect that, so it doesn't really matter. Sure it looks like a debacle now, but Australia looked pretty much unbeatable this tournament.
