Dunno how new they are but I just noticed them on the Computer Alliance site. Obviously they aren't as fast as the 8800's but they do support DX10 and are about $400 cheaper.
So if anyone's thinking of getting a new card they might be interested in these. Also, I have no idea of benchmarks and whatever so if they are crap I take no responsibility. 8-) |

No you're right, an 8800 is 425...
The 8600 are $300 for the GTS and 200 for the GT and both are much weaker cards. A 328MB Albatron 8800 GTS is 425 at at least 2 suppliers. |

sif you'd buy that now when dx10 games aren't even out yet.. You'll be able to buy an 8800 for the same price the 8600's are now etc etc

built a system for a friend about 2 weeks ago and put one of these in it. runs quite nicely. we played STALKER, Ghost recon, and a bunch of other games and it went quite well

I'd be curious to know how the 8600 fares for just pushing polygons, forget shader performance, compared to a 6800 or even 5700. Same deal with the 8600GT and 8600GTS - basically I want a card good enough to play Supreme Commander and Spore at reasonable framerates - eventually my brother is going to want his 6800 back, which is what I'm using for SupComm at the moment.

And for $100 more it would have played a whole lot better.
The reviews suggest its on par with a 7900GS or x1950 When comparing its performance to newer sub-$200 mainstream cards like the GeForce 7900 GS and Radeon X1950 Pro however, the results are more mixed.FiringSquad Tom's said if you have a limited budget of around $200... if you want decent performance... if you want the possibility of playing DX10 based games... and if you want to play your movies on your desktop, then the GeForce 8600 GTS is a card that can suit your needs Very soft language. "can" and 4 if's ... In 3dmark 05. The X1950XTX beats the 8600GTS, and the 7900GTS and X1950 beat the 8600GT Pro beat the 8600GT. |

The stupid thing is many people compare performance of say the previous generations top-line card and the new mainstream card, and determine that just because the previous-top is both cheaper and the same speed, people should buy that. However, what they barely ever factor in is that the older generation cards require far more power.
It's for that reason alone I'd choose a current-gen card than a previous-gen card. |

However, what they barely ever factor in is that the older generation cards require far more power. Lower power sounds like a pretty silly reason unless the older-gen card is extremely power hungry and loud. My 7950GT runs relatively cool, and doesn't make much noise. Having said that I'd get the newer card just because of the extra features (unified shading, etc) that will become mainstream eventually. No use buying old technology if it's going to be obsolete soon. last edited by parabol at 17:01:18 23/Apr/07 |

The older gens often get revamps with newer fab runs though, pretty much negating any power savings (assuming you were planning to buy a new product anyway). It's nice that they include power benchmarks in a lot of hardware comparisons these days but there doesn't seem to be much call for it usually.

I tried the FEAR demo when I had an X800 Pro card on an Athlon 2800XP system and it ran like ass.

i use to have an x800pro, it was awesome, only reason i got rid of it was because i wanted pci.
afaik, it still goes quite hard. I tried the FEAR demo when I had an X800 Pro card on an Athlon 2800XP system and it ran like ass.on all settings on maximum, it runs pretty crap. but on average user settings it was pretty good afaik. im happy with my x1900GT. :) although something is slowing my system down... gotta work out what exactly.. last edited by myWhiteWolf at 22:36:17 23/Apr/07 |

I recently upgraded my system to an Athlon 4600+ dual core, 7600GT video card and 3gig of DDR2 ram so I'm gonna give FEAR another shot. Finally got hold of the full version now plus it will be good being able to play it without it jerking all over the place like a $2 hooker.

Rev, let us know how the 7600GT performed, which card did you get (clock speed 650mhz or less?).
I'm soon to buy a new vid card and have been looking at the 7600gt's allthough maybe a $220ish 8600 may be better ? |

clicky
I bought that one from CA's. It's some no name brand but it works fine and for $169 it does the job. Only reason I have it is because I needed a PCI Express card to run on my new mobo and I didn't wanna spend an ass-load of cash. One word of warning though. If you're buying an nVidia card make sure you disable the s***house firewall that comes with the drivers. f***s me why they bundle that with a f***ing video card driver but they do. Caused nothing but f***ing trouble until I went into Add/Remove programs and turned the mother-f***ing thing off. Something else interesting as well was when I would run utorrent it would always display a warning how it would'nt run properly with the firewall going. How right they were. nVidia can go f*** themselves and stick that firewall up their ass!! |
