Best migration visa to go for is the defacto visa. Pretty easy to get. Just have to of lived together for a 12 month period and it doesn’t even need to be consecutive months although they don’t tell you that. My girl was going for this one, but as we both didn’t have our names on the lease or a joint bank account, the bastards declined us.

The next option after the defacto is the fiancee visa but you have to be married within 9 months of receiving the visa.

In the end she contacted a company she worked for here when we first met and they have sponsored her for 12 months with the option to extend it for 4 years. Hopefully by then I will be ready to settle down!

So yeh the most important thing is to be able show financial commitment. KEEP EVERYTHING. Phone card receipts, envelopes, make sure if she previously worked in Australia you’re the beneficiary of her super.

I currently have a gf on the defacto visa. Its a bit tricky in that they want you to have been living together for 12 months when you physically hand in the documentation. Of course, alot of visas dont run for more than 12 months, so you essentially hand them in on the day they are supposed to be leaving (in our case).

Apart from that its just a matter of ammassing paper. In the sense that, you just give them as much documentation that you can possibly scrape together. If it asks for something go out and get it. Its not just evidence of a current relationship or that one has existed, but that the relationship is going to continue. So, joint finances is key; bank accounts or investments.

As far as having leases and stuff like that, we didnt have any at all and had to rely on stat decs. I think in the end we had maybe 7 or 8 stat decs saying that various people knew us and that the relationship was genuine.

The best piece of advice i think is to start early. Just start grinding away, getting s*** together.

thats cool that you are going there. if think you guys will want to come back to aus and do the visa thing its problably best to grab the forms before you go so that you can have a list of all the things you will need from HER country. like police checks, criminal history and stat decs from her family and her friends about the relationship. all that takes time and sucks to do from overseas. also, it needs to be done in englsih or translated into english.
