Found unconscious in his hotel room today with vomit near him. Taken to hospital but died later.

I don't think it would be too unreasonable to suggest suicide may be the cause here. 2 losses putting Pakistan out, people burning effigies of him back in Pakistan - it's a pretty high pressure situation. Either way, that sucks.

Early reports suggesting it may have been a massive heart attack.

I also heard on JJJ that back home in Pakistan, the mob is calling for the team's bank accounts to be frozen pending an investigation. Obviously match fixing allegations are flying hard and fast back there.

Danm, I read this as 'WCG', figured I didn't know who the hell you were talking about because I don't play games much anymore. Bu then I thought "hang on, World Cyber Games finals isn't for a few months"...

Shows how much I care about croquet.

Yeah, it's a well known fact that the media is often reluctant to report a high profile suicide as a suicide so typically report it as just a death and leave the cause "up in the open" so to speak. The reason basically is because a high-profile suicide tends to spark more suicides and accidental deaths in the community if reported to the public (known as the Werther effect) and as such, they have an ethical obligation to keep it quiet.

I would hope he didn't suicide and it is still possible that it was a heart attack, but given the way the media has reported it, I would say it is likely a suicide unfortunately.

Reuters -- It is alleged that musician Kurt Cobain suffered a major cerebral haemorrhage when his personal firearm discharged accidentally, while being cleaned.

Werther effect, didn't know that one, very cool :)

Problem is, most people don't realise no matter how bad off you are, there is always someone worse.

Well yeah, but then I guess the research that coined the theory 'the werther effect' had to come from somewhere...

Reminds me of the 98 World Cup (soccer) - that colombian bloke that scored an own goal.

Gunned down at a nightclub only weeks later.

EDIT: it was 94, and he was Andrés Escobar

It's sort of lame that people will actually stoop to killing other people because their team lost a cricket match. I hope this turns out to be a random attack rather than something so depressingly trivial.

i don't think the motive will have been to avenge pakistan's loss

my guess is the match-fixing business is involved..

either
a) woolmer was about to expose/accuse/prove that certain players/bookies were involved with matchfixing

or

b) the match fixing bookies had heaps of money linked in with a super 8 game involving pakistan vs india or pakistan vs sri lanka etc .. now that pakistan have not even made the super 8 all that is down the gurgler

I read somewhere that Woolmer was just about to proof read/approve a final draft of an autobiography he was about to release, which apparently contained his thoughts/information about sub-continent cricket. So yes, potentially match-fixing was being discussed.

Don't forget he was also coach of South Africa when the whole Hansie Cronje match-fixing shenanigans were going down too.

And how's old Hansie doing nowadays? Hmmm...

While I'm not immediately sold on a match-fixing connection, the fact that the murder was not so obvious (ie. looked almost like a suicide/accident at first), makes it look more than just the work of angered fanatacism.
