I was just offered a job paying 10k higher then i am currently earning, but due to the location of the company, and liking where i work, i don't really want to change.. but probably would for the money.
So im thinking about going to my boss with the offer, and asking for a payrise.. but i've been warned that in the past he is the type of person who will match the offer, then turn around and make life hell for you - so have any of you got any ideas on a safe way of going about doing this? thx |

I suppose it boils down to two things.
1. You can relocate to obtain the extra $10k; or 2. You can twist your bosses arm for the extra $10k, and either; crawl through a bucket of s*** from the boss, or be fired and have to take the other job anyway. Personally, I wouldn't go to the boss straight away and demand an extra $10k, I would let everybody in the office know of the job offer, and of how torn you are between leaving and staying. Let it be known that you like where you are working, but the extra $10k would come in handy. Word of mouth will ensure that your boss will hear about it, and your boss might approach you on the subject. Let him know that he has a loyal and talented employee and he might just offer that extra reward you are after. Demand it from him, and then you will truly find out your true worth to the company. |

What made you look a for a new job in the first place?
Maybe take market research to your boss first rather than saying i have a new job, give me a pay rise or i will leave. |

$10k is a reasonable hike in salary depending on what you make originally of course. I read somewhere that a 6% pay rise is the "norm". When i was at my last job and i started looking around i found that most jobs were going for 10-15k more than what i was being paid. What that should tell you is that you're probably being underpaid where you're currently working and in my case it was due to my boss being a greedy so and so with no perceived value of I.T. that would pay min wage if he could get away with it.
What i'm sort of getting at is that sure you could twist his arm and maybe squeeze that extra 10k out of him but it would be just that - squeezing. Where to from there? Least with a company thats offering you the position you're base is 10k higher than your current jobs ceiling that your boss begrudgingly gave you. Thats my experience ne how. I got a 15k (from 35k) pay rise when i changed jobs and am much more valued and appreciated - haven't looked back. |

i think it depends on your boss.. i started working at my current place of work as a fresh graduate on a 'trial' with a salary of $18/hr (roughly 35k per year). After almost 3 months, the work i had done proved that i was a far leap from a normal IT graduate and I chatted with my boss about it and got a raise to $28 per hour ($58k per year). I think if you can sit down with your boss and he knows you are worth the extra money doing what you currently do, then he should be happy to pay it. If, on the other hand, he is purely looking at the bottom line, and you (in HIS eyes) arent worth the extra money, he either won't pay it, or will and like you said, start making you jump through 17 hoops of fire on a daily basis.

To be honest, I've yet to see any company throw down $10k on top of your package, 'just because' or due to worth, without it being immediately preceeded with a wakeup call in the form of a job offer elsewhere.
A couple of things: 1. If your boss is so unapproachable as not be able to quietly and openly talk to them privately that you've just received an offer from "XYZ" for a lot more, and it's tempting you, then are you really happy where you are now? I don't work for bosses that I couldn't talk to them that frankly. And as such, my boss would be ready to listen. 2. Does $10k put you into a higher tax bracket? Will your new Nett pay, coupled with additional commute time, result in increased expenditure on things like travel or fuel, car wear-n-tear, etc., ultimately yeilding in not that much of a financial gain? 3. What are the employee benefits of the new job vs the existing one, if any? Things like annual leave, salaried vs hourly, leave loading, investment options. 4. Which of the two offers more flexibility or room for promotion and advancement? 5. Do you feel that your current employers value your contribution? Would it be enough for you to stay, knowing that you are appreciated (and ultimately rewarded with (1) and (4)? |

I was in a same kind of dilemma recently. I usually like where I'm working, though lately it's been down a bit. Thing is, I know that I could go virtually anywhere else with my skills and experience and get another 20k. On the other hand, the work conditions would be far more formal than they are here.
Anyway, they added another 10k last month (I hadn't asked for a raise, though was kinda expecting/wanting one - was actually hoping it would be a bit more than that too). |

I have found a lot of work places in the IT industry won't give pay raises but then will happily pay more than the possible pay raise to hire someone new.

if you are seeking 10k more than your current job, then it is highly unlikely your current boss will just match it. purely from a pride point of view, they will resist because they feel like they are being blackmailed.
much better to leave and kick some goals elsewhere, then if they really miss you they will slowly come round to how you're worth that extra 10k on their terms. a few years back i started out as a grad on 30k. over the next couple of years i worked my way up to about $45k but hit a wall. I got a new job for 56k doing the same work (less hours). Then got a promotion a year later to 63k. If I has stayed with the first boss and tried to convince him I was worth this much he would have told me to FO. It is better to let the market do the talking imo. |

Yes on the other hand I started out on 35k and I'm way over double that now at the same job three years later. It's not always bad as long as you're very good at what you do :)

Yep agree with Crunch
take the money and the experience. risk is a big part of being successful. I haven't got the hang of it yet but I already see it's more than a random occurrence. Because I don't have the patience or focus to 'specialize' in any one particular sub-discipline, my value (which is not insubstantial) to my employers is my ability to be flexible. These are the characteristics you will pick up by jumping around employers, when the opportunity and the risks align. Go for it! |

I have recently undergone a similar situation to yours.
I got a call from another company who was interested in me to work for them. They knew i worked for another company at the time and were prepared to offer XYZ. It was a little over industry standard over here but had one main "perk" i was very attracted to. So i approached my current employers told them the situation and simply asked for a similar offer that HAD to include this perk. They refused and i resigned on the spot, and watched their faces turn white in front of my eyes :) I saw they as recently as this morning having hired 3 new p/t people to do the job i used to do. So i recomend putting it to them but be prepared if they "call you" on it. PS - I am overjoyed i took this new job though. |

i would move to the other place if i was you it is 10k more starting sallary so if you prove your self then you have the possibility of another payrise. but if you stay where you are and your boss gives you the 10k payrise you won't be getting another in a hurry.
but then again it all depends if you are happy where you are there is no point in going to work and hating every minute of it. i did that and for only about 32k a year, it is s*** when you wake up and dread going to work. i just changed jobs and went from 32k to 100k a year and couldn't be happier. even thought the money is better you can only put up with hating your job for so long. no point in being rich if your misserable. |

It depends on the job/environment too.
Some places are a breeze to work at, not much pressure, good work mates, Understanding Boss (They exist, right?). Then other places you goto your Box and sit there for 8hrs, then go home. Maybe not for 10k, but id take a pay cut and be happy, rather then more and miserable. |

i went from working for couriers please to working night shift picking orders. that is a 50 hr week so it would be about 75 k with out over time.
the reason it is so much is the penalties between 6pm and 6am it is time and a half first 3 hrs then double time every hour after that. the best part is no boss to tell you what to do we are left to ourselves. last edited by fubar at 00:25:00 02/Mar/07 |

To the OP, you're obviously looking else where or itching to for a change hence the job interview with another company. So why not make a big plunge and go to the new job?. You're probably what they wanted or else they wouldn't have offered you the job and higher pay (unless they're bastards and they're gonna use you like slave LOL but, you won't really know that until you started)
In my own experience, the only way to progress in life and career is to occasionally take educated bets and make decisions outside of your comfort zone. Progress can be up or down but on a whole I found it to be up, you've always learn from your past successes / mistakes. That is, if this is what you wanted to achieved in life and your career. If you're 100% content with your current job, stay. At end of the day it's really up to you, more pay is generally not what will make you more happy in a job. Just be honest. Go to your boss and say that this is what you've been offered but you like working where you are, however this opportunity may be too good to refuse based on your current renumeration.

Personally, I wouldn't go to the boss straight away and demand an extra $10k, I would let everybody in the office know of the job offer, and of how torn you are between leaving and staying. I wouldn't do this. The size of peoples total renumeration is a sensitive issue in most workplaces. If you start telling everyone what you could be paid in your new job you put you boss in a difficult position. If he/she then matches it the rest of the employees there will know you just got a 10K bump up which they will then want themselves. I think it is best to keep it to yourself and approach your boss privately. Be upfront and honest. If you boss believes the extra money is worth it to keep you around then he/she should give it to you. When you approach your boss be prepared; list your responsibilies, projects and tasks you have completely sucessfully recently. Gently remind him/her of the cost and time it would take to replace you in the current employment environment and remember to be prepared to leave if they turn you down. Goodluck. |

Go to the new job. Your current employee seems to not be paying you what you think or others think you are worth. Should they really have appreciated your work you would alreayd be on that salary. Everyone is replaceable.

I would let everybody in the office know of the job offer Awwwwwwww.......ok, office politics are out. Honestly, all you have to do is ask yourself "What is best for Jerry". The most informative piece of advice given so far, which you should really investigate, is what tax bracket the extra 10k puts you into. You might be surprised at how an extra couple of hundred a week can impact on your take home wage. Food for thought. You might only end up getting an extra $100 per week after tax. |

Some places are a breeze to work at, not much pressure, good work mates, Understanding Boss (They exist, right?). thats part of why the decision is hard - where im at is easy to work at, no pressure, and the people are good.. and ive only seen the other company's office when everyone had gone home so i dont know if its quite & strict/fun there i approached my office manager today who i am using as a passive way to speak to my boss - he has arranged for himself, the boss & i to have a meeting next week about it, and also arranging to deversify the work im doing as well as requesting i get a company car next thursday will be the decision maker day - whatever comes out of the meeting.. also, i dont have to worry about tax in this case - the next bracket is 75k (current = 32k base, offer is 42k base) last edited by Jerry at 23:46:16 02/Mar/07 |

if your brother has already resigned and is leaving, they will take you a bit more seriously.
I would simply go to the meeting with the intention to resign, if they match or beat the offer after discussions then stay. Whenever you're in this situation, you should only bring it up with the boss if you are prepared to leave. |

for both 32k and 42k taxable income you are eligable for the 1.5% medicare levy. Speaking of brackets remembering also the medicare threshhold and the extra you need to pay them if you step up brackets. for the medicare levy, you need to look at how much you earn and take 1.5% of that gross. that is the amount of extra tax you will pay if you don't have private health insurance. in most cases, that 1.5% is more then half of the cost of private health insurance; compound that with the benifits of private health insurance and it is a no brainer. |

I'm getting reamed by tax actually.. should look into private health insurance :) yup, i just did that finally got some decent payrises, so me and wifey signed up to a health fund (HCF, through her work) 33 bux a week, her work pays all excesses extremely happy so far, we are running at a proffit, thanks to me seeing an osteopath everyweek (25/20 bux back) and wifey seeing a dentist and getting 100% back (seems like a mistake to me) now, if i can just keep up going to someone each week, we should be right to stay in front of what we pay! |

What's that supposed to mean? Everyone pays 1.5% regardless. If you earn over $50,000 (single no kids) and don't have private health you pay the surcharge of 1.0% on top of the compulsory 1.5%. |

it means that for both of those taxable incomes you pay the whole 1.5%
once you start getting low that percentage goes down. when you go over 50k taxable it goes up to 2.5% |

Honestly, why worry about the "extra" tax. You only get taxed on a percentage of your wage - getting a pay rise means yes you pay more tax, but you still come out on top. Getting into another tax bracket means you pay more tax on the amount of income above the limit for the bracket!

Jumping on a bit late, but I guess like any big decision, a good way to make your mind up is to get a piece of paper, draw up 2 columns and write out the pros and cons of the decision. By the time you've exhausted the list, the right choice should be pretty clear.
These days I'm more fussy about the work conditions, as opposed to the money. Like I won't do oncall or overtime for example. So I wouldn't expect to be paid the same as someone who does. |
