Hey guys I'm having a fairly big problem with my PC at the moment.
Every time the thing boots up it freezes just before the login screen after the winXP loading screen.. Id have to restart anywhere from 10-50+ times to get it to boot into windows properly.

I'm worried that the next time i turn it off or have to restart it wont boot again then im screwed.

Any help would be awesome.

Tried using SYstem Restore to revert to a time when it didn't behave like this?

no I've never had system restore enabled in the last few years I've had this pc.. I regularly check for spyware and viruses and maintain the pc.

Does it do this when if you try to boot into safe mode?
How old are your power supply/drives etc?

Try running a drive fitness test on the drives (grab em from your drive manufacturers web site), that should tell you if your drives are being flaky

So back up all your important stuff onto a non encrypted hard drive or burn it to dvds. Other than that, my pc used to "hang" at that black screen before the login screen and after the xp logo but mysteriously fixed itself one day somehow so I have no idea what I did. Try installing the latest video drivers + reinstall direct x, that's what I do when odd things like that show up and if that doesn't fix it I just format (not being a smartass I really do format at the drop of a hat).

I reckon either your motherboard or PSU has popped Capacitors or your HDD might have a few bas sectors. Either way it is a hardware issue and I really think reformatting will only put off the inevitable.
Post some system specs and brands that might help.

If you have an onboard Broadcom 10/100 adaptor you could have encountered it's highly gay driver behaviour on some boards. I've had this exact same problem. Went into safe mode, removed the device, rebooted XP fine.. restarted again back into gentoo to get some work done.

Could be drivers? i would atleast do a format / reinstall of windows before forking out money for new equipment.

That suggests that it may be a software issue, however it could be a non-essential hardware piece that dosnt get loaded during safe mode, perhaps the On-Board sound or video if you are using them. Try disabling onboard sound from BIOS.
Also, when you choose what type of booting to do, (ie safe mode) one of the option is a noral start up with Logging. Choose that option and reset when you computer hangs, boot in safe mode. Look in c:\ (I think) for the log file and paste the last few lines here on the forum. That may explaine where it is hanging and we can perhaps find out why.
