A demo of Supreme Commander has been released! This anticipated RTS (often referred to casually as Total Annihilation 2) went through a lengthy beta period and is apparently shaping up to be pretty interesting. Download it now locally from AusGamers. (I'll make a torrent if it gets popular.)

Didn't you see us playing the beta? They may both be RTS's but you really can't compare the two.

No I didn't; I glanced at it briefly though. Actually thought it looked sort of average visually :|

whats the min requirements for this?

i read somewhere that c&c3 min requirements needs a 7900 or better and this, at a quick look, looks better graphics than C&C3

I have twice tried to download the demo from this link. Gets to 98% then says file does not exist.
As per the download page, we use temporary links - just go back to the download page, get a new valid link, and resume your download from that. See here for a poor man's guide on resuming downloads.

Go you fat node connection goodness!!!

Man, the scope of this game is going to KAIN!!
Can't wait till I get a 2nd monitor so that I can see what the fuss is about - tactical on one screen and actual gameplay on another I heard

Haklin,

I pay for easynews.com and tried the node news server but having to use a client once again was a huge and horrible shock which i found very frustrating compared to easynews, so i've not bothered with it and am still a happy easynews subscriber.

Just had a quick whirl at it, didnt like the visuals that much. I prefer the up-close feeling you get with Company of heroes and dawn of war.

Okay, Played it for an hour and a half on skirmish, enjoyed it a lot, however I hope they are going to make some changes, such as

* Game speed (build time) needs to be adjustable
* The ability to remap your controls
* When you have selected multiple units, it doesnt display health for each unit like other RTSs.

Thats all I can remember gripe wise, besides that it had a real TA feel too it and I loved it.

Tried the campaign last night, played a couple of skirmishes this morning. Skirmish AI seems pretty weak, awfully prone to rushing. Easiest way to kill it seems to be pushing his forces back from the start, then building a line of 4 or 5 level 1 turrets just outside range of his base. Then you lure his commander in and kill him quick. If the computer built a turret or two early game it'd stop the rushes (AA tower especially, you can get a bomber out pretty damn fast and bombers are awesome in this demo).

You can't airlift your commander either (no more commander bombing, aw :p).
I should probably have a longer skirmish where I let the cpu expand a bit more, and tech up. Still haven't had a good look at the level 3 and up attack units. Although during the campaign mode I did hit the unit cap; it doesn't seem to be all that high. Ended up building tons of resources then running out of cap for attack units (is the amount of used cap listed somewhere?)

The dual screen support is good, didn't seem to slow the game down when I enabled the second display. I found myself locking the mouse to the primary window and just using the second as a tac map though, because losing your mouse scrolling functionality is annoying.

What the hell are you scrolling with the mouse for?

Please don't tell me that you haven't figured out that the primary method of 'scrolling' in Supreme Commander is zooming out/zooming back in (The mouse zooms in and out on the cursor position, not the center of the view).
This means you can go all the way across the map in ~1.5 seconds.

I don't bother zooming out and back in just to queue something on the edge of my view area.

Come to think of it, this is one of the first DX10 compatible games so far, right? I wonder what difference it'll make.

is it just my install, or does it not actually tell you when your units get into fisty cuffs or your base is under attack?

yeah that s***s me off, I'm always too busy doing other stuff and then notice the screen shaking and have to race off to where its happening. I can't believe how well it runs on my system after all the talk of it running like a dog, 1920x1200 high details smooth as silk :)

It runs very poorly on my machine. 2100+, 128meg 9600xt and 756 meg of ram.

O well. :(

You guys could try enabling the tactical map. There's a button on the bottom left that puts a little minimap on the build bar which should let you see the whole battlefield, though you could always just zoom out to check on things :)

To be honest, I'm mighty disappointed by the demo. The hype promised "strategy, not tactics"; with tactics being pinged as rushing and/or zerging. In both the campaign and skirmish gameplay modes, I found the most effective way of winning was a simple rush and/or zerg. Patrolling units around enemy bases didn't respond to a probing attack (so they can't be drawn away to form a weak point; and tower placements vs units available (as cybrans at least) meant zerging was the way to go for campaign mode.

Game ran like a dream on my setup; 1680*1050 with pretty much every setting on; but with lax gameplay like that i'll be taking my $10 preorder elsewhere - if nothing else its another $10 I can save on PS3.

Can anyone help how to enable second screen?

I have tried in span and clone mode. Doesnt work.

Do you have to install it with 2nd screen enabled perhaps?

I dont understand how they can seperate strategy and tactics, to me they are inseperable.

For instance, your stratagy might be to piss off the other player so that he does stupid angry things. The way in which you do this is the tactics, such as repeatidly destroying a Radar tower so that the devots lots of time and resources over defending it, giving you a few priceless minuets trashing a much more important location.

There is little point in having a stratagy and no tactics to make it work.

It is kind of like having a thought and no action. The thought is useless without an action.

Hiya Deeper, did you see my post earlier in the week? I'm going to be a Dad! :D

The game ran like crap on my dated machine so I cant really say anything. It did seem like just another RTS tho with bigger maps. I'm hoping it is more :D

Their basic logic is that most RTS games really don’t have a lot to do with strategy, if anything. They should really be RTT games, because the major focus is on the general tactical engagements.

IIRC, the idea was that the tactical engagements of the game start getting so large that you spend most of your time worrying about the strategic consequences of what you are doing, and attempting to predict the consequences of your opponent’s individual tactics and perhaps even try and decide what their overall strategies are.

The problem with tactics and strategies used in games is that most morons who exist on the internet, really don’t understand the difference between the two. The vast majority of “strat’s” are really tactics, but they are to stupid to realise it.

I think on smaller maps (such as the one provided with the demo) the utility of the theatre of war zooming capability is somewhat unwarranted. You can play the map much as you could play the original TA. What I'm especially looking forward to is fighting multiple opponents on multiple fronts over large distances, and even against multiple enemies. I think SC will really shine in this kind of scenario, especially with all the handy features TA is missing.

Those kinds of massive battles were great fun in the original TA (64x64 maps, 4-8 players, good times), although the scale was far smaller than is possible with SupCom, and there were so many engine limitations and problems (pathfinding, transportation, buggy stealth units, the massive superiority of air units over land units because of said pathfinding problems, etc) that games often became somewhat difficult to manage and often stalemated for long periods.

Oh well, only 9 days left until the AU release. I'll make up my mind about the game after I've finished the single player and played through a few good skirmishes with mates.
