Well given the massive range of offerings available for the ipod I don't think that'll be a problem

Apple quotes 5 hours of battery life for talk or video, with a full 16 hours in music mode -- no word on standby time yet.

I rekon it might be 5 hours for video and 16 for music.

whaddya rekon?

Yeah, but they also say the Nano gets about 16 hours or something but a few months down the track the battery wont last nearly that long anymore. You dont want a phone that is going to die on you in the afternoon because you where listening to some mp3s that morning on the bus.

That will (mark my words) be the next mobile phone I buy. I'm not into the whole mobile phone fashion thing but that thing is awesome.

Expect it on Telstra guys. I of course have nothing to back this up, other than the fact that Telstra runs Australia's only EDGE network. Furthermore, Cingular and Telstra are fairly chummy. Finally, the second-gen iPhone will no doubt be 3G and HSDPA capable. Cingular (like Telstra) are pioneering a HSDPA 850MHz 3G network - the same as NextG.

I'll be waiting for the HSDPA version kthx, mainly cause GPRS is slow :(

If there's one thing I've learned from Apple, if you like a product, wait a year and there'll be something 10x better.

Looks great. I'll buy one because it will be like having 3 devices in one.

About the battery life:

Surely this iPhone will have a replaceable battery system? Every mobile phone on the planet has this feature... the iPod does not!?

Compression of GPRS data, basically means that 3x the amount of data can be sent per communication. Result to the end user is that their data transmission is 3x as fast. ~115kbps rather than GPRS' 38.4kbps. Wikipedia link.

I watched the keynote. The phone is typically Apple in that everything seems nicely integrated. It's a killer app for the telcos as it looks like it may actually make data services useful on a mobile device. I bet singular are drooling just thinking about all those new revenue streams. I bet Telstra will subsidize the hell out of it when it gets here :)

very true that it would be smarter waiting for gen2 iphones, but i seriously dont think i will be able to hold out. infact, i think i will be camping out front of a telstra shop at launch.

My path is to check if the gf wants it, if not it's off to mum, if not it's to my siblings then down to my nieces/nephews.

Yeh - second hand mobile phones are generally so worthless you might as well just give them away to anyone that will use them.

If you can't find anyone that wants it, I've seen mobile phone recycling thingos at some phone stores (maybe the Telstra Shops?) that are a good idea too.

Looks pretty sweet. I think their experience with the iPod helps this to start out as a pretty good package, the near future upgrades I see this getting are faster network and larger capacity. The screen looks pretty sweet though.

Do you think the next gen iPod will take those features for the people who don't want the phone also or do you see the iPod dying off and Apple forcing customers to iPhone?

I mean, the phone looks cool for what it does, but if you don't really care about the phone, an 80GB version that's music/photo/video with the same interface would be awesome.

To be honest it'd be more fun to burn it/throw it at something than recycle it for free.

It looks like it s***s from on high on my PPC phone. I'd snap one up in a tick provided they don't break the AUS$1500 mark here outright which i suspect that it will since it's US$700 on a plan for the 8GB version.

They've basically taken everything i like about my PPC and given it a non-clunky interface, sexied up the features somewhat and made it all integrate together. The slightly longer and wider frame is made up for with its thinness.

Just need to confirm it has GPS like suggested in the transcript on CNN ("determines its location using global positioning satellites"), and get confirmation that 'EDGE' is 3G or wait for the 3G version.

I have a touch screen remote and although I love its ability to control everything on the planet having to actually look at it to find the keys gets annoying. With this touch screen phone how am I supposed to SMS people while I'm driving? I refuse to buy such technology.

CISCO announced today that they are assuming that Apple accepted their most recent last minute offer on resolving the iPhone trademark issues since Apple didn't cancel the iphone announcement at the apple keynote yesterday.

If Term endorses it, then I definitely won't be getting it :P (Did Steve pay you to say that?)

It looks pretty sweet, but I'll wait till I can touch one before I pass judgement... Apple Newton anyone? ;)

The Apple iPhone contains accelerometers that detects the phone rotation and change the display orientation. It is also used to switch between phone and player mode.

thats a nifty feature

the phone supports EDGE which is 2.5G I believe.

Keynote can be found on the apple front page (bottom left) - you'll need quicktime 7 to stream it though.
